Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, November 27th through Sunday, December 3rd.

Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

What: Gaming
When: Monday, November 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Senri Oe

What: Music
When: Tuesday, November 28th at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Where: MSP International Airport/Tomodachi Mall of America

Senri Oe, a jazz and j-pop musician known in the geek community for his work composing music for Doraemon and Sanrio, will be performing at Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport’s Central Mall from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and at the Mall of America Tomodachi store from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. He will be available for a signing.

Knitting Social

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Tuesday, November 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

Indigenous Voices at The Buffalo Show

What: Theater & Comedy, Community
When: Tuesday, November 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl and Theater

Indigenous Voices is a series of events focused on the voices of indigenous people, run by the Pangaea World Theater and in operation since 2001. The Buffalo Show is an event in this series organized by Oyate Hotanin, presenting Tatanka Ohitika (Strong Buffalo), a Dakota elder, poet, American Indian Movement advocate, and storyteller. He’ll be joined on stage by host Al Gross for an evening of discussion and other events, including music by “Dakota Blue” Peters, an appearance by Mitch Walking Elk, a 10-minute play by Ikidowin, and a tribute to Jesse Ed Davis. Tickets are $9.27 with service fees, or $10 at the door.

Tea and Meeples: Movie Night

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Movies
When: Tuesday, November 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is movie night, so be ready to chase your tea and company with movies. The group will be watching Moonrise Kingdom and Your Name.

YogaQuest Continues: Gremlins

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, November 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Gremlins, so be very careful about feeding your adorable pets after midnight or exposing them to water. This event costs $15.

“New-Bee” Only Killer Queen Tournament

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, November 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Up-Down

Are you new to Killer Queen? Do you still enjoy competitive play, and want to try it out with other newbies? Then this is the event for you. Test your skills in this tournament for a chance at fame and prizes for winning teams. Tournament entry is free, but glory only comes to the best “new-bee.”

Kathleen Novak for Rare Birds

What: Books
When: Wednesday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Subtext Books

Minneapolis Author Kathleen Novak will be at Subtext Books to promote her newest book, Rare Birds, with a reading and signing event. Rare Birds focuses on neighbors in a Northern Minnesota mining town and explores questions about the assimilation of immigrants into a community. Novak is a Minnesota Book award finalist for her previous novel, Do Not Find Me, and a poet whose work has been featured in literary magazines.

Tabletop Tester Night: WARP

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Clockwerks Brewing continues its monthly Tabletop Tester Night, a series in which the brewery invites local game designers to lead guests in playing a new game. This month is WARP, a game by local designer Andrew Voigt that focuses on a war-torn future and is heavily inspired by first-person puzzle games. There will be prizes and giveaways.

When: Thursday, November 30th through Sunday, December 3rd
Where: Loring Park

The annual Holidazzle celebration returns to Loring Park Thursdays through Sundays from now until December 23. Shop local craft vendors, enjoy live music and food, walk through the illuminated art display, and go ice skating for free. There are fireworks every Saturday of the festival at 7:00 p.m., and this week you can catch outdoor movie screenings of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (November 30 at 6:00 p.m.) and Beauty and the Beast (December 3 at 5:00 p.m.). Holidazzle is open Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Fridays from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

Catching Fire Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Thursday, November 30th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Catching Fire Yoga is a new class about radical self-acceptance and love based on the messages put forth in The Hunger Games. This new yoga class is open to all body types and experience levels and costs $15. Mats and props will be available.

Board Games at Burning Brothers Brewing

What: Gaming, Community
When: Thursday, November 30th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Burning Brothers Brewing

Enjoy a night of games and beers with with this event hosted by the Saint Paul Board Game Group. The main event of the night will be open gaming, running from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., but fun will be had all night. Bring some of your own favorites or try out games that others have brought while being considerate of other people’s games.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, November 30th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trailer Apocalypse

What: Movies
When: Thursday, November 30th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

See two hours of rare trailers from the “Criterion Collection of cult” on 35mm film. This collection of vintage trailers is curated by Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski of Grindhouse Releasing fame. Tickets are $8 for this collection of bizarre trailer wonder. See all kinds of exploitation and genre trailers, and enjoy a drink. (There will be a Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive box at the Parkway during this event—donate an item and get a free popcorn!)

Winter Fairy Festival

What: Family, Meetup, Arts
When: Friday, December 1st at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday December 3rd at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Costumes and Curiosities

Winter is a time of enchantment and wonder, and the Winter Fairy Festival in Anoka is a time to celebrate enchantment with Fairy Wings, costumes, sparkling beverages, treats and more. This event will take place over the course of the weekend, and will feature fairy costumes from Faeward Inn. Bring the whole family to enjoy some fairy magic.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. (Consider buying or bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at Mischief Toy Store.)

Psych Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Friday, December 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Community Grounds

Community Grounds coffee shop in Columbia Heights presents a night of trivia all about Psych. Go in solo if you’re brave, or with a team of up to six if you need some support, for a chance of winning a prize.

Minnesota Herpetological Society December Meeting

When: Friday, December 1st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Herpetological Society, Borlaug Hall

If reptiles are part of your geeky wheelhouse, the Minnesota Herpetological Society‘s December meeting is the place for you. This event is a great opportunity to get to meet other reptile enthusiasts, view adoptable animals, and hear a talk from a local herpetological expert. This meeting’s guest speaker is Jim Gerholdt, one of the founders of the Minnesota Herpetological Society, a former zookeeper, and an animal educator with decades of experience.

United Geeks of Gaming BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 1st and Saturday December 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” the first two performances of A Klingon Christmas Carol this season will be this Friday and Saturday at the Historic Mounds Theatre in St. Paul. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Learn the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour

When: Friday, December 1st at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Lush

Join fellow cosplayers for a social hour at Lush to admire costumes, geek out about costume-making technique, and hang out together in an inclusive and welcoming environment. Attendees who RSVP to the facebook event will have their cover fee waived. The group will have several tables reserved, so you can hang out with fellow cosplayers, admire their work, and learn from them.

Twin Cities’ Largest Tea Party

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Family, Arts
When: Saturday, December 2nd at 9:00 a.m. to Sunday, December 3rd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Mrs. Kelly’s Tea

Winter’s chill is coming, and with it is a season of coziness and warmth brought on by tea. Celebrate your love of tea with this family-friendly event that is billed as the Twin Cities’ largest tea party! Enjoy tastings of over 100 of Mrs. Kelly’s most popular award-winning, local, freshly blended teas. This is also an opportunity to view tea-related pottery, paintings, and more. This is a free event, but there is a recommended donation of $2 or a nonperishable food item.

United Geeks of Gaming Open Gaming at Fantasy Flight Games

When: Saturday, December 2nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at Fantasy Flight Games.)

Call to Adventure Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, December 2nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Prepare for your own hero’s journey with this yoga class focused on pose exploration, led by YogaQuest’s Vanessa. This class is the last in a series focusing on learning yoga poses in depth so that you can be ready for the greatest adventure that’s yet to come. Cost is $15.

Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo

When: Saturday, December 2nd starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, December 3rd starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Brickmania Toyworks

Brickmania Toyworks is hosting a LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis on weekends through January 7. This is your chance to see some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry. A Handmade Holiday Market

where: Lakes and Legends Brewing Company

Find all the handmade gifts you need for the upcoming holiday season at Minneapolis Craft Market’s Handmade Holiday Market at downtown brewery Lakes and Legends. This is a great opportunity to see wares from over 20 local artists, crafters, makers, and more while enjoying farm-to-table Belgian beer. This market will be open on December 9th and 16th as well.

Hamiltunes Twin Cities!

When: Saturday, December 2nd at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Community Grounds

Community Grounds coffee shop in Columbia Heights presents this night of singalongs to the hit musical Hamilton. Don’t throw away your shot for a night of nonstop Founding Fathers–focused hip-hop musical stylings. There is a sign-up sheet attached to the event description for songs and parts in those songs, and as of right now there are sill some juicy parts left.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 3rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at the Source.)

Gender Jam: Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

What: Meetup, Community
When: Sunday, December 3rd at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam, a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth, will be enjoying a day exploring the Como Park botanical gardens. This is a chance to hang out, see the wonders of the plant world, and get your mind of the cold. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.
