Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Star Wars Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies
When: Monday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Blackstack Brewing

Are you a true Jedi master? Test your Star Wars knowledge at BlackStack Brewing‘s trivia event. There will be free beer and prizes for trivia winners, plus costumes. May the Force (and BlackStack’s excellent beers) be with you.

The Monster Science Ensemble: Walk the Dinosaur

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science presents Walk the Dinosaur, a night of stories, poems and songs about “the majestic saurians of deep time—the dinosaurs.” This free event is a celebration of some of the animals that shared the planet with our earliest mammalian forebears, thriving to fill dozens of ecological niches and sizes. The show features the talents of the Dino Birds, Pat Harrigan, Gregory Parks, James Satter, Sharon Stiteler, Bryan Thao Worra (who recently joined Twin Cities Geek as a contributor), Tim Uren, Duck Washington, Natalie Wass, and Jena Young.

Star Trek and The Prisoner Viewing Party

What: Movies, Arts, Family
When: Monday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

TC Trek Trivia presents a night of adventure of both the espionage and science-fiction television varieties. This is a free all-ages event which screens episodes of The Prisoner and Star Trek. Concessions are available for purchase at the theater.

Books & Bars: The Annie Year

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Annie Year by Stephanie Ash.

Tea and Meeples: Crafting/Cookie Swap

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Arts
When: Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is crafting/cookie swap, so get ready for a great cookie exchange and some social crafting.

YogaQuest Continues: Star Wars

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Star Wars, so prepare yourself, young Padawan. This event costs $15.

Star Wars Holiday Special Toys for Tots Event

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, December 13th at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a sort of bizarre cultural artifact that certain segments of the geek community need to see, and the Bryant-Lake Bowl has been screening it every winter for 11 years to benefit Toys for Tots. Admission to either of Wednesday’s showings is one toy for a tot. Experience Wookiee Life Day in all its glory, and see what George Lucas wanted destroyed for decades.

Cookie House Press 2017

What: Books, Music, Meetup
When: Wednesday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Coffee House Press

Enjoy a night of holiday cheer hosted by Minneapolis book publisher Coffee House Press with cookies, treats, beer, wine, books, DJ sets of deep holiday cuts, prizes, and gift wrapping. This event is free and open to the public, and with every book sold, Coffee House Press will donate $3 to Voices for Racial Justice. If you can, bring cookies to share.

TC Trek Trivia: A Captain’s Yule Log

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

When: Thursday, November 30th through Sunday, December 23rd
Where: Loring Park

The annual Holidazzle celebration returns to Loring Park Thursdays through Sundays from now until December 23. Shop local craft vendors, enjoy live music and food, walk through the illuminated art display, and go ice skating for free. There are fireworks every Saturday of the festival at 7:00 p.m., and this week you can catch screenings of A Christmas Story (7:00 p.m. on Thursday the 14th) and Frozen (5:00 p.m. on Sunday the 17th). Sunday, December 17, will also be Open Streets at Holidazzle, so you can explore downtown. Holidazzle is open Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Fridays from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

Dungeons & Dragons Thursdays

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, December 14th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Come to GlitchHQ on the second Thursday of every month for an open game of Dungeons & Dragons or Mouseguard, welcoming new and experienced players alike. The game is played in an open or sandbox style, so don’t worry about missing individual sessions for overarching story. Just show up, roll up, survive, and level up. Materials and rules provided. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive—the drive officially ends on December 13, but it will be at GlitchHQ for one extra day!—and read more about Glitch in our recent article.)

Catching Fire Yoga

Catching Fire Yoga is a new class about radical self-acceptance and love based on the messages put forth in The Hunger Games. This new yoga class is open to all body types and experience levels and costs $15. Mats and props will be available.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 14th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday December 14th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 15th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Harry Potter Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Friday, December 15th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Community Grounds

Community Grounds coffee shop in Columbia Heights presents a night of trivia all about Harry Potter. Go in solo if you’re brave, or with your housemates (be they Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw), for a chance of winning a prizes. Cosplay is encouraged. Have some butterbeer, and give a house elf a sock for luck.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 15th and Saturday December 16th at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, December 17th at 4:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” A Klingon Christmas Carol continues this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Historic Mounds Theatre in St. Paul. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Learn the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. United Geeks of Gaming Open Gaming

When: Saturday, December 16th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building, Room 107

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

A Handmade Holiday Market

What: Arts, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, December 16th at 12:00 p.m.
where: Lakes and Legends Brewing Company

Find all the handmade gifts you need for the upcoming holiday season at Minneapolis Craft Market’s Handmade Holiday Market at downtown brewery Lakes and Legends. This is a great opportunity to see wares from over 20 local artists, crafters, makers, and more while enjoying farm-to-table Belgian beer.

Voices Heard and Unheard

What: Music
When: Saturday, December 16th at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m
Where: Augsburg College, Sateren Auditorium

The Calliope Women’s Chorus will be performing its annual winter concert with a matinee and evening performance on the Augsburg campus. The concert is the first with a new artistic director, Krystal Stark, and will explore the theme “Voices Heard and Unheard.” Tickets are $10 online or $12 at the door.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Marathon

What: Movies, Books
When: Saturday, December 17th at 10:45 a.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

Spend 730 minutes with your fellow Lord of the Rings geeks, hobbits, elves, dwarves, and orcs at the Riverview Theater’s annual back-to-back trilogy screening. This year’s program will be screening the extended editions of the film, and the event will include a costume contest. Doors will open at 9:45 a.m., and the first showing, The Fellowship of the Ring, will begin at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 17th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

The Shieldmaidens are a group of female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games who host a weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam: Field Trip!

What: Meetup, Community,
When: Sunday, December 17th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam, a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth, will be going on an undetermined field trip to local place. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Minnesota Cider Guild Open House

What: Food & Drink
When: Sunday, December 17th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Birchwood Café

Learn about craft cider, meet fellow cider enthusiasts, and allow the Minnesota Cider Guild to take you on a journey of cider discovery. This is a great opportunity to try new varieties and see a wide range of flavor profiles while learning from cider makers. There will be samples from Keepsake Cidery, Milk and Honey Ciders, Minneapolis Cider Company, Number 12 Cider House, Sweetland Orchard, Urban Forage, Wyndfall Cyder, and Yellow Belly. This event costs $10.

Pundamonium: The St. Paul Pun Slam

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, December 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Pundamonium is a pun slam, a contest of wordplay with 10 contestants, each given two minutes to make puns based on prompts they are given ahead of time. The audience acts as judge, and this process repeats throughout the night until a final pun-off. This night of groans and laughs is $7.
