Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

What: Gaming
When: Monday, December 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, December 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Harry Potter Trivia

What: Trivia, Books, Movies
When: Monday, December 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Are you a true wizard or something of a muggle? Test your Harry Potter knowledge at BlackStack Brewing’s trivia event. There will be free beer and prizes for trivia winners, plus costumes.

Star Trek and The Prisoner Viewing Party

What: Movies, Arts, Family
When: Monday, December 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

TC Trek Trivia presents a night of adventure of both the espionage and science-fiction television varieties. This is a free all-ages event that screens episodes of The Prisoner and Star Trek. Concessions are available for purchase at the theater.

Photography Club Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts
When: Tuesday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at the Waterbury Building on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “Minnesota Moose: MIA,” which looks at the dramatic decline in the moose population of Minnesota. This event is presented by Dr. Michelle Carstenen of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Tickets are $5 to $12 online or at the door.

Tea and Meeples: Holiday Sing Along

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Music
When: Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week, get ready for some holiday tunes.

YogaQuest Continues: Die Hard

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Die Hard, so get ready for the holidays. This event costs $15.

Turkish Star Wars

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

If you saw The Last Jedi and still don’t have your fill of Star Wars, come to Trash Film Debauchery‘s screening of the “Turkish Star Wars” (Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam in the original Turkish). The bizarre pastiche involves skeleton cavalry, stock footage from the Soviet and American space programs, footage lifted directly from Star Wars, and more. This is part of Trash Film Debauchery’s screening series of Turkish send-ups of American films and TV shows.

Where: Espresso Royale

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).” (Note that Espresso Royale is closing all of its Twin Cities locations later this month.)

Speed Friending for Geeks

What: Meetup
When: Wednesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 508 Bar and Restaurant

This event is organized like speed dating, but the goal is to make connections that can lead to real friendships with fellow geeks. Spend five minutes with each person and swap tables at the sound of the bell in order to connect with 20-plus potential new friends over the course of the events. Tickets are $5.99 ahead of time or $15 at the door. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. This event is put on by Speed Friending Twin Cities.

When: Thursday, November 30th through Sunday, December 23rd
Where: Loring Park

This week is your last chance for the annual Holidazzle celebration in Loring Park, which ends December 23. Shop local craft vendors, enjoy live music and food, walk through the illuminated art display, and go ice skating for free. There are fireworks on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and you can catch a screening of The Polar Express on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Holidazzle is open Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Fridays from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

The Great Northeast Make Merry

What: Arts, Nightlife, Food & Drink, Music
When: Thursday, December 21st at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Sociable Cider Werks

The Minneapolis Craft Market, Frank and Ernest Markets and Events, and Sociable Cider Werks are teaming up for an evening of merry making, feasting, carousing, and handcrafted art from local makers. Expect a variety of local creators, delicious food, great cider, and more.

Co-Op Talk

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, December 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly discussion of interactive media and digital games. The event begins with a short time to mingle and chat, with snacks and refreshments, followed by this month’s discussion topic: “Bad Game Mechanics,” led by Allen Starton. (Read more about Glitch in our recent article.)

Third Thursday: Hello Winter

What: Arts, Food & Drink, Music
When: Thursday, December 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

The theme for the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s monthly Third Thursday event for December is Hello Winter. This event will celebrate the change in seasons with warm drinks, music, and a winter-themed tour of Mia’s collections. This is a great opportunity to learn about winter fun in Minnesota thanks to partnerships with the Great Northern, the Minnesota Zoo, Art Shanty Projects, and more. Knitting will also be available thanks to Knitteapolis Yarnbomber. This event is free, but reserving tickets ahead of time is recommended if you want to view the current special exhibit, Eyewitness Views: Making History in 18th-Century Europe.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew: Sequin Ornaments

When: Thursday, December 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This week is a monthly craft night featuring sequin ornaments.

Grown-Up Club’s Forced Retirement Party

What: Meetup, Nightlife
When: Thursday, December 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

All good things must come to an end. “Every time a bell rings a scrappy activity group for infantile adults loses the legal right to continue using its name.” Grown-Up Club will be discontinuing its operations, so send them off with a night of coloring, crafts, pickles, a special guest and alarmingly “sensual activities.”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 21st at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday December 21st at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

Making Spirits Bright After-Hours Holiday Lights

What: Arts, Family
When: Friday December 22nd and Saturday, December 23rd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

This kid-friendly event is a great opportunity for brightness and cheer at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. There are six displays of outdoor lights organized around different themes, including the Festive Farmstead and Frozen Forest. Additionally, see thousands of LED lights indoors and the 25-foot poinsettia centerpiece. Tickets are $15 at the gate. Refreshments (including hot chocolate) are available for purchase onsite.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

The Dregs Holiday Show

What: Music
When: Friday December 22nd and Saturday December 23d at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Black Forest Inn

Make your spirits bright for the holiday with two nights of holiday performances by comedy folk band the Dregs. Enjoy holiday “classics” with a Dregs twist as well as original songs. Tickets are $25, and attendance is limited to 70 per night.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 22nd and Saturday December 23th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

The last two performances for this year’s production of A Klingon Christmas Carol are happening this Friday and Saturday night at the Historic Mounds Theatre in St. Paul. Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” it will teach you the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, December 22nd at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series

Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo

What: Family, Arts
When: Saturday, December 23rd starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, December 24th starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Brickmania Toyworks

Brickmania Toyworks is hosting a LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis on weekends through January 7. This is your chance to see some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry.

Can Can Wonderland’s Holiday Party

What: Music, Nightlife, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, December 23rd at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

See the Red-Hot Rascals for some holiday debauchery at Can Can Wonderland. Enjoy live music, delicious food, and Can Can Wonderland’s famous minigolf and signature cocktails. Ugly sweaters and dancing shoes are encouraged for this night of fun.
