It’s a Wonderful Life

What: Film, Family
When: Monday, December 25th at 3:00, 5:30, and 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, December 26th at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Take in a screening of the beloved holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life at the Trylon in Minneapolis. James Stewart and Donna Reed star in iconic roles in this Frank Capra film involving complex themes of greed and looking at possible alternate timelines. Tickets are $8.

Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

What: Gaming
When: Monday, December 25th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Knitting Social

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Tuesday, December 26th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

Tea and Meeples: Reading with Friends

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, December 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week, get ready for to cozy up with a book for reading with friends.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, December 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, December 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday December 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Holiday at Hogwarts

What: Meetup, Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Friday, December 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Music, chess, and quiet will greet you at this holiday party hosted by YogaQuest. The party is meant to evoke the feeling of being home during the holidays at Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series and will be a time for quiet communion with fellow geeks. This event is intended as a fundraiser for YQdio, and while it is free, a $10 donation is suggested.

Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo

What: Family, Arts
When: Saturday, December 30th starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, December 31st starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Brickmania Toyworks

Brickmania Toyworks is hosting a LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis on weekends through January 7. This is your chance to see some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry.

Grain Belt Sign Relighting

What: Food & Drink, Community, Family
When: Saturday, December 30th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Various (see below)

An old friend of the Twin Cities, the Grain Belt Premium sign overlooking the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, will be relit on December 30th, and you have the opportunity to come celebrate. The actual sign-lighting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m., and the official After Glow after-party will follow at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

In addition, a number of local bars are participating in pub crawls, some with shuttles and some without; and nearby Wilde Café and Spirits on St. Anthony Main is  having its own party, with “food and fun” from 3:00 p.m. to close. Reservations are recommended for the Wilde Café event.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, December 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 31st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Kaiju Buffet

What: Movies, Food & Drink, Family
When: Sunday, December 31st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Dig into monstrous portions at Pepito’s Mexican Buffet as you watch your favorite kaiju (giant monsters) wreak havoc onscreen in this family-friendly event. The giant monster movie is a mystery and will not be revealed until you are in for the buffet. The movie screening itself will be at 1:00 p.m.; the earlier start time reflects the buffet. The ticket (including food) is $8.

2018: The Party Starring Raja and Raven

What: Nighlife, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, December 31st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue

Let 2017 end. Stomp on its grave with 2018: The Party, presented by Flip Phone, an LGBTQ-friendly dance night focused on jams from 1996 to 2006, the age of the flip phone (also the people behind the popular Drag Brunch events at Union Bar and Grill). Tickets are $25 in advance until Monday the 25th, then go up to $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Dance the night away with music by DBAZ and pop-up performances from Julia Starr, Magic Dyke, and Max. This event will be hosted by Tygra Trinity Slarii.

Betty’s New Year’s Eve Gold Party

What: Nightlife, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, December 31st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Betty Danger’s Country Club

See the beginning of 2018 in gilded luxury and extravagance at Betty Danger’s New Year’s Eve Gold Party. This is a night to dress to the nines in glamorous golden garb and to dance the night away to the disco styling of DJ Sheik. Your ticket includes three “gold standard” cocktails and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, along with access to a sleigh ride in the sky for breathtaking views of Minneapolis. Tickets are $45.

Gotham City New Year’s Eve

What: Nightlife, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, December 31st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop Bar & Grill

Another option to say goodbye to 2017 in style is Union Rooftop’s Gotham City New Year’s Eve event. Enjoy music and dancing on Union’s (enclosed, heated) rooftop or on a bigger dance floor in the downstairs Rev Ultralounge. This will be a great night for fans of EDM, modern hip-hop, and top-40 music, with guests Mr. Peter Parker and Hollywood Hot Rod. Expect costumes, themes, and decorations on all three levels. Tickets are $35.
