Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Meet Think Small

Where: Think Small

This is free tour of Think Small, a community organization focused on early-childhood education. Instructors, executive leaders, and others will be available to answer questions about the program. Wine and cheese are provided.

Books & Bars: The Annie Year with Annie Ash

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, December 5th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Annie Year by Stephanie Ash, and the author will be making an appearance at this event.

Tea and Meeples: Board Games

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is board games, so be ready to chase your tea and company with some gaming.

YogaQuest Continues: Doctor Who

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Doctor Who. This event costs $15.

Five Watt Second Annual Joy Joy Art Sale

What: Arts, Community, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, December 5th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Five Watt Coffee

Support local artists and charities at Five Watt Coffee’s second annual Joy Art Sale. This event will feature local artists selling their works for $25 dollars for less with proceeds going to charity, along with DJ sets, mulled wine, and beer. The charities supported are Isuroon (a community driven organization motivated by the belief that Somali women and girls deserve to be healthy and have a strong voice), and Hopewell Music Cooperative North (an organization focused on providing quality music education).

MTG Night: Iconic Masters Draft

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Clockwerk Brewing’s monthly Magic: The Gathering night returns for a special event with Iconic Masters Draft. Come for a draft night with iconic cards and friendly competition in a geek-friendly brewery. For an entry fee of $35, players will receive three booster packs to draft a 40-card deck and then face off against their opponents in a total of three matches. Win Magic-related prizes and extra goodies from Clockwerks.

Holidazzle

What: Nightlife, Arts, Movies, Family
When: Thursday, November 30th through Sunday, December 3rd
Where: Loring Park

The annual Holidazzle celebration returns to Loring Park Thursdays through Sundays from now until December 23. Shop local craft vendors, enjoy live music and food, walk through the illuminated art display, and go ice skating for free. There are fireworks every Saturday of the festival at 7:00 p.m., and this week you can catch outdoor movie screenings of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (November 30 at 6:00 p.m.) and Beauty and the Beast (December 3 at 5:00 p.m.). Holidazzle is open Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Fridays from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

PLAY/TEST

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, December 7th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

Catching Fire Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Thursday, December 7th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Catching Fire Yoga is a new class about radical self-acceptance and love based on the messages put forth in The Hunger Games. This new yoga class is open to all body types and experience levels and costs $15. Mats and props will be available.

December Coloring Club

What: Community, Arts
When: Thursday, December 7th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Merlin’s Rest Pub

Come to the book nook at Merlin’s Rest to join fellow adult coloring enthusiasts for a night of coloring, good company, food, spirits, and more. This is an 18-plus event, and attendees are welcome to bring their own materials or use the extras provided.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 7th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

First Thursday Films: Moonlight

What: Educational, Movies
When: Thursday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Capri Theater

First Thursday Films at the Capri Theater, a screening and speaking series, will be showing Moonlight as part of Black Cinema: Under the Skin, a program of films by black filmmakers exploring black culture and experience. Moonlight is the winner of three Academy Awards, including best picture, best supporting actor, and best writing for adapted screenplay. The film tells the story of young black man moving from childhood to adulthood, learning about himself and forming connections, and is a profoundly moving work of cinema. Learn more after the show with guest speakers T. Mychael Rambo (actor, vocalist, affiliate professor) and Harry Walters Jr. (actor, director, professor). Tickets are $5.

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday December 7th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

The World Crime League’s F**ked-Up Xmas Special

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 7th–Saturday, December 9th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 10th at 2:30 p.m.
Where: The Phoenix Theatre

The World Crime League will be hosting a night of dark short plays focused on holiday fare with an edge of dark humor. Enjoy stories about zombie plagues in Victorian London, sinister airport propositions, dark wishes, assassinations, and more. The nine plays will be directed by Stephanie Alexander, Ryan Beal, Andrew Rosdall, and Troy Stolp. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door, with Sunday’s show being “pay what you want.”

The Unabominable Yodi Book Signing with Author/Illustrator Christopher Straub

What: Books, Family, Meetup
When: Friday, December 8th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Tomodachi

Meet author, illustrator, designer and all-around creator Christopher Straub (best known for his work on Project Runway) at this book signing and meet-and-greet at the Mall of America Tomodachi Store. This event is your first opportunity to get a copy of his children’s book The Unabominable Yodi and the matching plushie, perfect for three- to six-year-olds. Tomodachi will be serving snacks and offering a gift to guests who buy the plush and book together.

CSE Winter Light Show

What: Science & Tech, Arts
When: Thursday, December 7th through Saturday December 9th at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.
Where: Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

The CSE Winter Light Show is a winter tradition at the Twin Cities U of M campus, featuring a student-led 3D outdoor light show experience with a quarter of a million LED lights set to music. This is the seventh year of this tradition, which is presented by the Tesla Works student group and sponsored by the College of Science and Engineering with extra support from the Minnesota Parent and Family Program. Shows are at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. and last for roughly 15 minutes, repeating on December 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Friday Night Magic

When: Friday, December 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. (Consider buying or bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at Mischief Toy Store.)

Star Wars Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Friday, December 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Community Grounds

Community Grounds coffee shop in Columbia Heights presents a night of trivia all about Star Wars. Go in solo (no pun intended) if you’re brave, or with a team of up to five if you need some support, for a chance of winning a prizes. Cosplay is encouraged. May the Force be with you.

VR Night

What: Gaming
When: Friday, December 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

As we careen into the future, we come closer and closer to the geeky dream of being able to disappear into the holodeck and never emerge. Come to Glitch to try modern virtual-reality games that show how close we’ve come to that civilization-ending dream. Robo Recall, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Tilt Brush, Star Wars Battlefront VR, Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and more will be available.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m., the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Prince from Minneapolis Preview Party

What: Music, Arts, Food & Drink
When: Friday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Weisman Art Museum

Prince from Minneapolis is a new exhibit at the Weisman Art Museum that celebrates the life of Prince with work from photographers who chronicled his early years and artists inspired by his work. This event will be an opportunity to check out the exhibit, enjoy some appetizers, and listen to tunes from Prince-loving DJs. The preview party also presents an exclusive opportunity to meet muralist Rock Martinez. Tickets are $25, or $10 for University of Minnesota students.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 8th and Saturday December 9th at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, December 10th at 4:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” the first two performances of A Klingon Christmas Carol this season will be this Friday and Saturday at the Historic Mounds Theatre in St. Paul. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Learn the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. A Minnesota Nutcracker

When: Friday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, December 9th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Where: Ames Center

The Twin Cities Ballet will be putting on performances of A Minnesota Nutcracker, a fresh rendition of the classic using Minnesota-centric backdrops. This performance is accompanied by the iconic Tchaikovsky score and promises entertainment for the whole family. Tickets start at $20.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, December 8th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series

KrampusNacht Ball

What: Nightlife, Music
When: Friday, December 8th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

Krampusnacht is upon us—a night to celebrate Krampus, a figure from Germanic holiday traditions known for kidnapping and beating spoiled rotten children. Ground Zero will be hosting a night of dancing, two-for-one drink specials, and Krampus cosplay to help people celebrate and or cope with the terrifying holiday creature. Entry is $5 for this 21-plus event, or free for those who come dressed as Krampus.

Geek Partnership Society Holiday Emporium

What: Community, Family, Meetup
When: Saturday, December 9th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The GPS Holiday Emporium is the place to go for local crafters, holiday cheer, music, and geeky festivity. If you’re shopping for your personal winter holiday, the local vendors there might be able to help you out. Enjoy these festivities secure in the knowledge that this event is a fundraiser for STEAM programming for youth.

Harley and the Ivy Comic Con

What: Comics, Conventions
When: Saturday, December 9th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: American Legion Post 435, Richfield

This free comic-book and collectible convention features a wide variety of items for sale along with special guests. There will be comics spanning from the silver to modern age, Funko POP! figures, action figures, and more. Don’t miss out on your chance to meet special guests Brent Schoonover and Dave Wheeler.

Holiday Jubilee

Where: Source Comics and Games

The Annual Holiday Jubilee at Source Comics and Games is a day for discounted geeky shopping, free food and treats, prizes, and celebrating local creators. There will be 20 percent off everything in the store (30 percent with an Adventure Club card), free hot dogs, and prize drawings. You can also see local creators, including Otis Framptom, Drew Brockington, John Bivens, Nicholas Straight, Lupi McGinty, Peter Wartman, Aaron Grono, Ryan Dow, and Ted Anderson. Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo

When: Saturday, December 9th starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, December 10th starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Brickmania Toyworks

Brickmania Toyworks is hosting a LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis on weekends through January 7. This is your chance to see some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry. A Handmade Holiday Market

where: Lakes and Legends Brewing Company

Find all the handmade gifts you need for the upcoming holiday season at Minneapolis Craft Market’s Handmade Holiday Market at downtown brewery Lakes and Legends. This is a great opportunity to see wares from over 20 local artists, crafters, makers, and more while enjoying farm-to-table Belgian beer. This market will be open on December 16th as well.

Alien 35mm Screening

What: Movies
When: Saturday, December 9th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

See Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror masterpiece on a rare 35mm print at the Parkway Theater. Alien was a star-making role for Sigourney Weaver and deemed a “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” work by the Library of Congress. It features horrifying creature designs, believably human dialogue and action, and a future that feels used and lived in. Tickets are $10 for this screening.

The Cantina Strikes Back: A Star Wars Dance Party

What: Nightlife, Music
When: Saturday, December 9th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue

One week before The Last Jedi hits theaters, DJ Jake Rudh and Transmission are coming together with the Current, City Pages, and the Electric Fetus are coming together in something of a Rebel Alliance to present this Star Wars–themed dance party. Enjoy a night of dancing, costumes, a City Pages photo booth, an appearance by the 501st Legion, and more. This is an 18-plus event with $10 tickets. Droids and lightsabers are allowed, but no blasters.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 10th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

The Shieldmaidens are a group of female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games who host a weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at the Source.)

Gender Jam: Video Arcade!

What: Meetup, Community, Gaming
When: Sunday, December 10th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam, a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth, will be enjoying a day of new and old-school video games. The meeting space will be converted into something of a video arcade, with an HTC Vive for new virtual-reality gaming along with some retro ’80s and ’90s systems to get that old-school vibe. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Doctor Who Meetup: “Rise of the Cybermen” and “The Age of Steel”

What: Television, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup group will be holding its October event at the Parkway Theater, screening the episodes “Rise of the Cybermen” and “The Age of Steel.” Enjoy some Who with other Whovians!

Books and Beer Pop-Up Bookstore

What: Books, Food & Drink, Community
When: Sunday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Utepils Brewing Company

Meet authors, buy books, and drink beer at the Books and Beer Pop-Up Bookstore at Utepils Brewing Company in Minneapolis. This event will feature 23 local authors, including Twin Cities Geek contributor Mark McPherson, and is a great opportunity to connect with writers and find new favorites.

Bad Weather Holiday Market

What: Community, Arts, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, December 10th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing

Shop small and support the local creative community at Bad Weather Brewing’s Holiday Market, where there will be over 20 local makers to help you find the perfect things for your holiday shopping. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a locally brewed beer while shopping for locally produced art. Potter’s Pasties food truck will be at the Brewery.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

What: Community, Music, Family
When: Sunday, December 10th at 4:15 p.m.
Where: Golden Hills Drive Railroad Crossing

Fill your heart with joy as PRISM fills community food shelves with heart-healthy foods at this event full of music and light. The Pacific Railroad Holiday Train will be coming to the Golden Hills Drive Railroad Crossing (close to Allianz), decorated with holiday lights for festive viewing. Prior to its arrival, there will be festivities including music, warm beverages, and the mayor of Golden Valley. Dress for the weather, and bring a food donation to the PRISM tent and Finnegan’s Reverse Food Truck.
