Star Trek: Discovery Viewing Party

What: Movies, Arts, Family
When: Monday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

TC Trek Trivia presents a night of new Star Trek. Follow the adventures of a brand-new crew with your fellow geeks in a great old Minneapolis theater. This is a free, all-ages event and will continue screening until the conclusion of the season. Concessions are available for purchase at the theater.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Tech
When: Tuesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “The Other Brain: How Glial Cells Help Us Think,” presented by Dr. Eric Newman from the University of Minnesota’s department of neuroscience. Tickets are $5 to $12 online or at the door.

YogaQuest Continues: Batman (1966)

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is the 1966 premiere of Batman, so prepare for silliness and comic sound-effects. This event costs $15.

Tea and Meeples: Board Games: Luck of The Draw

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. Enjoy a night of gaming with your tea this week.

The Not-So-Silent Planet

What: Books, Arts
When: Tuesday, January 16th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth” has its monthly event at Kieran’s Irish Pub on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The featured performer for January’s session is Dave Stagner; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

Poets & Pints

What: Arts, Books, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Sisyphus Brewing

Enjoy a night of poetry and brews in a great brewpub and celebrate surviving 2017. Hear readings from local poets, including Michael Torres, Joe Davis, Maitreyi, and Bryan Thao Worra.

Trash Film Debauchery: The Turkish Exorcist: Seytan (The Devil)

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon

Trash Film Debauchery continues its Turkish remake series with the Turkish version of The Exorcist, called Seytan. This is essentially a shot-by-shot remake of The Exorcist. Trash Film Debauchery is a local movie screening series focused on showing odd films, usually related to a theme, and has been a Twin Cities fixture since it appeared as a student group in the mid-2000s. Tickets are $5.

Third Thursday: Fashion Night

What: Arts, Food & Drinks
When: Thursday, January 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

The theme for the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s monthly Third Thursday event for January is Fashion Night, with GoMN and nearby B. Resale. Enjoy a night of fashion and music with a variety of art activities, including making a mood board, illustrating art-inspired designs, and a live performance by Sophia Eris.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Star Wars Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies
When: Thursday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Wander North Distillery

Do you know a T-16 from a TI-84? Come prove your midi-chlorian count at Wander North Distillery’s Star Wars trivia night. Questions will focus on characters, equipment, timelines, and more. Enjoy some themed cocktails with your team, and may the Force be with you.

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, January 18th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday January 18th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays; see this link for details.

Protospiel MN 2018

What: Gaming, Arts, Educational
When: Friday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, January 21st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Best Western Plus Bloomington

This weekend-long event is all about getting professional feedback for games you are looking to design. Protospiel will also allow you to try all sorts of new games before they hit Kickstarter and the market. Make new friends, expand your horizons, and try new stuff. Registration for designers is $60 for the whole weekend, or $30 for a day; testers are $10 for the weekend.

Lord of the Rings Trivia

What: Trivia, Books
When: Friday, January 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Community Grounds

Community Grounds coffee shop in Columbia Heights presents a night of trivia all about The Lord of the Rings. Go in solo if you’re brave, or with a fellowship if you’re not one to just walk into Mordor, for a chance of winning a prizes. This event is free, and prizes and precious prizes are available.

Red Bull Crashed Ice Saint Paul

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Friday, January 19th at 6:00 p.m. to Saturday, January 20th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Downtown Saint Paul

Marvel as skilled athletes travel down courses of ice at breathtaking speeds in front of St. Paul’s massive and illuminated cathedral at Crashed Ice. This event is open to all, with free general admission and premium-viewing available as well. There will be a number of events, including a chance for an athlete to be crowned Ice Cross Downhill Champion.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, January 12th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering Rivals of Ixalan FNM Draft event. Entry is $15; all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Comedy on the West Bank

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, January 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Nomad World Pub

Comedy on the West Bank is a new comedy show at the Nomad World Pub that focuses on a mix of improv and standup comedy, featuring Wendy Berkowitz, Impromancy, Mark Knutson, randomly chosen improv, Bee Hive Medusa Improv, and Dan Hinnenkamp. This is a 21-plus event with a recommended donation of $5.

Juliet & Juliet Present An Introduction to Shakespeare’s Unwritten Works

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, January 19th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: HUGE Theater

The Bard is responsible for many classic works, but he left us wanting more. Allow the duo Juliet & Juliet to fill in those gaps with a night of Shakespearean improv. “Kings will be fools, fools will fall in love, lovers will die—or something like that.” Tickets are $10, and this show will continue running throughout January and February.

GPS Open Gaming

When: Saturday, January 20th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Skaters of Might and Magic

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies, Community, Family
When: Saturday, January 20th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: NE 5th Ave, Minneapolis MN, 55413

If you haven’t seen a wizard fight on roller skates, you haven’t lived. The forth bout of the 9th season of Minnesota Men’s Roller Derby will be between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings characters and promises “an epic wizard battle on 8 wheels.” Tickets are $5 for this family-friendly event, and attendees are invited to attend an afterparty at Lake Monster Brewing in St. Paul.

Minnesota Quidditch Yule Ball 2018

What: Books, Nightlife
When: Saturday, January 20th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: McNamara Alumni Center, University of Minnesota

Witches, wizards, and muggles are all invited to the party of the year, the Minnesota Quidditch Yule Ball. Dance the night away to the sounds of TC Bhangra, and enjoy Harry Potter cosplay, decorations, refreshments, and merchandise. This event is a fundraiser for the Minnesota Quidditch team. Formal, semiformal, or costume encouraged. Tickets are $35 for couples, $20 for individuals.

Unstable Booster Draft

What: Gaming
When: Sunday, January 21st at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Fulton Tap Room

Take part in a Magic: The Gathering draft with a Minnesota draft, or great food, at Fulton Brewing’s taproom. This event costs $15 and space is limited, so preregistration is recommended. Prizes will be awarded to winners.

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, January 21st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, January 21st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
