Star Trek: Discovery Viewing Party

What: Movies, Arts, Family
When: Monday, January 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

TC Trek Trivia presents a night of new Star Trek with the return of its Discovery viewing party. Follow the adventures of a brand-new crew with your fellow geeks in a great old Minneapolis theater. This is a free, all-ages event and will continue screening until the conclusion of the season. Concessions are available for purchase at the theater.

Free Psychotronic Mystery Movie Night at Grumpy’s

What: Movies
When: Monday, January 8th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Grumpy’s Bar & Grill

Come be surprised by Psychotronic Film Society’s January mystery movie night at Grumpy’s! This is a free event featuring a certain crowd-pleasing movie with “strong barbarian women” in a great Minneapolis location with cheap drinks and food. Bring some friends and be surprised by some movie weirdness.

Books & Bars: Before the Fall

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, January 9th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Before the Fall by Noah Hawley.

YogaQuest Continues: Sherlock, “The Abominable Bride”

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, January 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is the Sherlock Christmas special, “The Abominable Bride,” which took Holmes back to a Victorian setting full of puzzling cases and mustaches. This event costs $15.

Tea and Meeples: Nerdy Ninth

What: Food & Drink, Meetup
When: Tuesday, January 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. Enjoy a night of nerds coming and sharing what they personally are nerdy about in a negativity-free environment.

Fearless Lab

What: Theater & Comedy, Arts
When: Tuesday, January 9th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey Minneapolis

Come to the January edition of Fearless Lab and become a test subject for experimental comedy. Are you ready for something that no one else has seen or that needs some testing before going to a wider audience? Expect to see performances from Craig Larson, Rachel Dunlap, Eric Thompson, Duck Washington, Maren Aalgaard, and Brian Alexander. This is a pay-what-you-want event with a cash bar.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association 40th Year Kickoff Reading

What: Arts, Books, Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, January 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mojo Coffee Gallery

Help kick off the 40th year of The Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. Local poets and performers will be sharing their creative work, with the lineup so far including SFPA president (and Twin Cities Geek contributor) Bryan Thao Worra, 2017 Elgin Chair Josh Brown, award-winning poet Ruth Berman of the Lady Poetesses from Hell, Eric Tu, Jake Skillings, Kyle “Guante” Tran Myhre, Riawa Thomas-Smith, Kyle Dekker, Hawona Sullivan Janzen, Reverend Matt’s Monster Science, and Phillip Andrew Bennett Low of the Not-So-Silent Planet, the nation’s longest-running speculative-literature slam. There will be refreshments, book signings, door prizes, and an open mike at this free and open event.

TC Trek Trivia: Deploy The Collector

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, January 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, January 11th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Nerd Out!

What: Meetup, Educational
When: Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m.

Nerds of the Twin Cities hosts a monthly evening of informative guest speakers and mingling with other geeks. January’s event will feature three speakers and topics: Nick Powley on “3,201 Miles to Boston and Back with CoCreateX,” Jon Slock with “Hostels 101,” and Lindsay Shimizu with “Mask of Sanity: History of the Psychopath.” The event will take place in moto-i’s second-floor “Big Boy Lounge.”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Friday Night Magic: Chaos FNM Draft Event

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, January 12th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering Chaos FNM Draft event. Entry is $15; all players will receive prizes, including a “sufficiently cool promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, January 12th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Frankenstein: 200 Years of Life

What: Educational, Family, Books, science & technology
When: Saturday, January 13th at 10:30 a.m.
Where: The Bakken Museum

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking work of science fiction, Frankenstein, at the Bakken. This event will teach and entertain, with information about the way that science informed the creation of this story, monster making, alternate-reality games, and works from Barry Moser.

Beer Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, January 13th at 10:45 a.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Center yourself with an hour long yoga session fueled by a pint of beer at Beer Yoga. This 1 hour yoga session and pint costs $20, and is led by 2 instructors, Sara and Elisabeth. The yoga session is intended to be accessible to everyone, and every body. Bring a mat if you have one.

Doctor Who Meetup: The Late Dr. Who Christmas Episodes

What: Television, Meetup
When: Saturday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group will be holding its January event at the Parkway Theater, screening the 2017 Christmas episode. Enjoy some Doctor Who with fellow Whovians!

The Saber Legion’s Saber Resolution II

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies, Family
When: Saturday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Post 435 American Legion

Did The Last Jedi‘s visually stunning throne-room sequence get you in the mood for more saber combat? Come see an evening of lightsaber combat for the whole family from the Saber Legion. Tickets are $10 presale, $15 at the door, and free for kids under 12. Witness at least nine saber matches, along with demonstrations of lightsaber choreography. There will be a full bar available for refreshments.

Saturday Night Space Opera: Join Kylo Ren’s Special Operations Battalion!

When: Saturday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Local sci-fi RPG night Saturday Night Space Opera returns for a special post–The Last Jedi edition, offering a night in the 501st Legion using Stay Frosty, a tabletop RPG system designed to focus on military science fiction and the exploits of space grunts (in this case, Stormtroopers). This is a free event, all rules will be taught, and no materials are required. Just RSVP on the website to snag your spot. Family Day: To the Moon!

When: Sunday, January 14th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Let the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Family Day take you and your little ones to the moon with a day chock full of lunar art activities, storytelling, gallery hunts, and tours. This is a great opportunity to build that imagination-powered jet pack, or explore the cosmos with the Bell Museum’s Exploradome. This event is free, so help young minds fire up their interest in science by peering at the moon, the stars, and the cosmos.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, January 14th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Shinnenkai 2018

What: Food & Drink, Music, Arts, Family
When: Sunday, January 14th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Washington Technology Magnet School

Celebrate the Japanese New Year in Minnesota with Shinnenkai, an event bringing together food, performances, children’s activities, and more from the Japan America Society of Minnesota. There will be a silent auction and mini market selling items related to Japan. This family-friendly event aims to create an atmosphere that allows cultural exchange and a Japanese New Year’s experience for all. Tickets are $13 for the general public, with a variety of discounts available to JASM members, students, and seniors.
