Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 5th to Sunday, February 11th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, February 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury Center

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and The Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Free Drop-In D&D at Eastlake Brewing

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Monday, February 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Eastlake Craft Brewery

Dungeons and Dragons will be on tap (in addition to great local beer) at Eastlake Craft Brewery. This is a free event, and no experience or supplies are required to drop in to the game. Just show up, roll some dice, and tell some stories. Space is somewhat limited in the brewery, so this is a first come, first serve event.

Star Trek: Discovery Viewing Party

What: Movies, Family
When: Monday, February 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

TC Trek Trivia presents a night of new Star Trek. Follow the adventures of a brand-new crew with your fellow geeks in a great old Minneapolis theater. This is a free, all-ages event and will continue screening until the conclusion of the season. Concessions are available for purchase at the theater.

Books & Bars: Homegoing

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, February 6th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Homegoing, a tale reflecting the repercussions of the Atlantic Slave Trade by focusing first on two sisters from 18th-century Ghana, following the divergent paths of their families over the centuries. Homegoing is the first novel from Yaa Gyasi.

YogaQuest Continues: The O.C.

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is The O.C. so take a little break from the winter cold and imagine you’re in warm SoCal. This event costs $15.

Tea and Meeples: Craft Night

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Arts
When: Tuesday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. Cozy up for the winter and enjoy some crafting.

Speculations Reading: Michael Merriam

What: Books
When: Wednesday, February 7th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamhaven Books

Speculations, a co-production of DreamHaven Books and SF Minnesota, continues with a reading from Michael Merriam. Merriam is an actor, poet, playwright, and professional storyteller. He’s also a co-founder of the Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers, a member of the Artists with Disabilities Alliance, and more. This is a free event.

Winter at the Walker

What: Arts, Sports & Fitness, Community, Family
When: Thursday, February 8th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Embrace the full variety of seasons in Minnesota and celebrate Winter at the Walker with snowshoeing, arts, music, sauna, and more. This is a kid-friendly event that coincides with the Walker’s free Thursday events. This is an evening of fire and ice, where participants can take guided moonlight snowshoe tours to see snowy sculptures, or warm up inside at the Little Box Sauna. This week’s drop-in art workshop will be led by local-artist Mandi Smethells.

Dungeons & Dragons Adventurers League

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, February 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mead Hall Games

Dungeons & Dragons Adventurers League is a place for drop-in organized play of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. This is a free event with open play, and per the event organizer, there will be dinosaurs. Show up, grab a character, roll some dice, tell a story, and see if you can survive.

Dungeons & Dragons Thursdays

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, February 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Come to GlitchHQ on the second Thursday of every month for an open game of Dungeons & Dragons or Mouseguard, welcoming new and experienced players alike. The game is played in an open or sandbox style, so don’t worry about missing individual sessions for overarching story. Just show up, roll up, survive, and level up. Materials and rules provided.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center, and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a belly-dance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card; free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, February 8th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays.

Adult Night Out at the Zoo

What: Educational, Nightlife
When: Friday, February 9th at 4:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Zoo

This is your opportunity to see the Minnesota Zoo after hours and without children around. Food and beverages will be available and exhibits will be open later than normal, with Discovery Bay staying open until 9:00. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 day of, or free for members.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering Rivals of Ixalan FNM draft event. Entry is $15; all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Fearless Five: Conspiracies

What: Comedy & Theater, Arts
When: Friday, February 9th and Saturday, February 10th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Mounds Dinner Theatre

Fearless Five is an annual short play festival from Fearless Comedy Productions; this year it will focus on conspiracy theory. See the works of five writers, five directors, and a multitalented cast as they explore conspiracy theories old and new. Tickets are $10.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, February 9th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Juliet & Juliet Present An Introduction to Shakespeare’s Unwritten Works

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, February 9th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: HUGE Theater

The Bard is responsible for many classic works, but he left us wanting more. Allow the duo Juliet & Juliet to fill in those gaps with a night of Shakespearean improv. “Kings will be fools, fools will fall in love, lovers will die—or something like that.” Tickets are $10, and this show will continue running throughout January and February.

Boneshaker Book Club: Parable of the Talents

When: Saturday, February 10th at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Boneshaker Books

Boneshaker Book Club, a free and monthly public club held at Boneshaker Books in Minneapolis, returns to discuss Octavia Butler’s Parable of The Talents. Parable of The Talents is the lauded sequel to Parable of The Sower, and tells a tale of a society in flux, bigotry, environmental and economic change, and choice regarding the transformation of human destiny. Boneshaker Book Club is a welcoming space to all, and clearly states that racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, and more are not welcome.

Magers and Quinn February Tweet Up

When: Saturday, February 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

The MN Publishing Tweet Up returns for 2018 with its first tweetup of the year at Magers and Quinn. This event is an informal meetup with coffee, donuts, books, and people who love writing, publishing, and books. Come on down and network with other book geeks!

Art Shanty Projects

What: Arts, Community, Family
When: Saturday, February 10th and Sunday, February 11th at 10:00 a.m.,
Where: Lake Harriet/Bde Unma

Venture onto the ice for this annual adventure and experience an eclectic mix of art installations, performances, games, activities, and more. Per the event organizers, the easiest way to reach the shanties is walking out onto the ice by the Lake Harriet Bandshell. Enjoy human-sized hamster wheels on ice, a notary public, minnow memorials, and more. This weekend is your last chance to explore the Art Shanty Projects on Bde Unma for the season.

13 Gears: An Eclectic Steampunk Event

What: Meetup, Arts, Family, Music
When: Saturday, February 10th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Grain Belt Brewery Building

13 Gears: An Eclectic Steampunk Event brings Steampunk to the Twin Cities with a bazaar, live Steampunk bands, tea-dueling, portraiture, parasol dueling, and a costume contest. Children under seven get in free, otherwise tickets are $7.50 and need to be purchased online before midnight February 9th. If there is extreme inclement weather such as a snow emergency, the event will be postponed to February 17th.

Saturday Night Space Opera: Battle of The Board Games

When: Saturday, February 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Local sci-fi RPG night Saturday Night Space Opera returns for a special board-game night, specifically focused on science-fiction-board games such as Star Saga, Mission:Red Planet, and more. This is a free event, all rules will be taught, and no materials are required; just RSVP on the website to snag your spot. Check out our article on Saturday Night Space Opera’s community building.

Gender Jam: Sweets for Our Sweets

What: Meetup, Community, Arts, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, February 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be having their first ever Sweets for Sweets sale, a bake and craft sale intended to raise money for the free programming that Gender Jam provides. Participants are asked to invite their friends and family. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, February 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
