Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 26th to Sunday, April 1st.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, March 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Disney Trivia at BlackStack Brewing

What: Trivia
When: Monday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Disney buffs come together for this night of trivia about 90s Disney films at BlackStack Brewing. So gather your pride, your team of talking-household implements, and all of your other beautifully animated, singing-prone friends and compete for prizes in a great St. Paul brewery. Costumes welcome!

Poetry in the Neighborhood Workshop: Saymoukda Vongsay

What: Arts, Books
When: Tuesday, March 27th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Rice Street Library

This free poetry workshop will explore the narrative poem by using writing prompts to generate ideas under the leadership of CONvergence 2017 fan-featured guest Saymoukda Vongsay. Vongsay is a Lao American writer whose work has amplified the voices of refugees through plays and poetry. This event is partially supported by the Cultural Sales Tax Revitalization Program.

YogaQuest Continues: Westworld

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Westworld, so prepare to stretch your consciousness and definitions of humanity. This event costs $15.

Game Night: Spy Alley

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Come on down to Clockwerks Brewing for a night of “deceptively simple and surprisingly intense” espionage action. This event is hosted by the Downtown Minneapolis Board and Card Games Meetup group and game designer Bill Stephenson. So get your secret-decoder rings out, enjoy a pint of Scottish ale, and learn some secret identities.

Tea and Meeples: Board Games: Spring is Coming!

What: Food & Drink, Community, Gaming
When: Tuesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. Spring is coming, so mentally prepare for nature’s awakening with a friendly night of board games, and enjoy a dinner of chickpea cutlets with mustard sauce.

Ready Player One Movie Premiere Event

What: Movies, Family, Gaming
When: Wednesday, March 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo

See the upcoming Spielberg adaptation of Ready Player One—a story of geeky Easter eggs and virtual worlds—in style by checking out a DeLorean, a VR station, and some brief talks before the show. Depending on weather, they may also set up a mini ’80s show, so expect fun ’80s-themed rides! Tickets are $16 for adults, $13 for children.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, March 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, March 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a belly-dance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card; free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, March 29th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays.

Minicon 53

What: Conventions
When: Friday, March 30th at 3:00 p.m. to Sunday April 1st at 4:00 p.m.
Where: DoubleTree in Saint Louis Park

Come to Minicon 53 for a volunteer-run science-fiction convention, with special guests Rachel Swirsky (Nebula Award-winning author) and Lyda Morehouse (winner of the Phillip K. Dick Award). This con covers a wide variety of interests, from science-fiction literature, to lockpicking, to comparing sci-fi predictions to our increasingly high-tech world—see their website for a full listing of panels and topics covered. Preregistration is closed, but there are a variety of options for registering at the door, ranging from $70 for the whole weekend to $20 for just Sunday.

TEDxUMN: A Tale of Twin Cities

What: Educational
When: Friday, March 30th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: McNamara Alumni Center

This annual spring conference will tell tales from the Twin Cities from a variety of fascinating speakers. While these stories may focus on the Twin Cities, they also show how a modest Midwestern-metro area along the northern end of a massive river can have global reach. This event is organized by TEDxUMN, and tickets range from $15–30 and include a light dinner.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, March 30th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering Iconic Masters draft event. Entry is $20, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

2nd Annual All-Night Horrorthon Fundraiser

What: Movies, Community
When: Friday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Trylon

Help keep cult and revival cinema alive in the Twin Cities by staying up all night watching horror movies with other film geeks! This event begins at 7:00 p.m., and will feature six horror films, gruesome trailers, and rare 35 mm prints. If you can survive until dawn, you’ll receive a button and poster. Tickets are $40.

When: Friday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: James J. Hill House

While Hamlet is likely familiar to you, Wayward Theatre Co’s choice to bring the play outside of traditional theater settings is probably less so. Enjoy Shakespeare’s classic tragedy in a golden-age mansion and see the way that the space is used to realize themes of opulence and power inherent in Hamlet. Tickets are between $30 and $50, and this play will run through much of March.

Potterheads Unite!

What: Nightlife, Music
When: Friday, March 30th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

Witches, Wizards, Muggles, and more are welcome for a night of magic, dancing, and potions of social lubrication (two-for-one drinks from 10-11:30 p.m.) at Ground Zero. Enjoy a selection of music from the 80s, 90s, and 00s. All houses are welcome, from Hufflepuff to Slytherin, and admission is $5 for costumed Potterheads, or $10 for those in Muggle cosplay.

Starcraft 20th Anniversary Party

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, March 31st at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss have been duking it out in various forms for 20 years now, and this event is all about celebrating the 20th anniversary of Starcraft—Blizzard’s strategy powerhouse and one of the earliest well-known eSports. This party will be all about watching the festivities, including YouTube and Twitch videos. Bring some cash to pitch in to the pizza fund, snacks, additional pylons, or beverages.

North Star Roller Derby Season 12 Bout 4: Block Party

What: Sports & Fitness, Community, Music
When: Saturday, March 31st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum

Come on down for a roller derby extravaganza at Bout 4: Block Party! Enjoy bouts between Delta Delta Di and the Kilmore Girls for third place, with the Banger Sisters and Violent Femmes in competition for first. In addition to the roller derby action, enjoy halftime entertainment of honest, Sonic-loving indie rock from 4th Curtis, and adult beverages from Bent Paddle Brewing Co. and Sociable Cider Werks. Tickets range from $13–35, with more expensive tickets giving access to the beer garden, advanced seating, and possible free craft beer/cocktails; kids under nine get in free.

TSL’s Armageddon II

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Saturday, March 31st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: American Legion Richfield

Full-contact-light-saber combat is The Saber Legion’s raison d’être, and this event will not disappoint saber-combat fans! This event will feature a number of vicious Star Wars-inspired saber bouts, and a headline fight between Steve Mattsen and Alain Bloch for the TSL World Championship. Tickets are $10.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, March 31st at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 1st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Community, Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, April 1st at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. The actual event as of yet is TBD, but check out the Gender Jam Facebook page for more information. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.
