Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 5th to Sunday, March 11th.

Creative Night

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Buffy Trivia at BlackStack Brewing

What: Trivia
When: Monday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Trivia slayers and Buffy fans unite for this night of trivia celebrating Buffy the Vampire Slayer at BlackStack Brewing. Bring a team together and compete for prizes, all in a great St. Paul brewery. Costumes welcome!

Books & Bars: The Underground Railroad

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, March 6th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

Books & Bars is an “open-public-book-club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, an alternate-history novel following Cora and Caesar, two enslaved people escaping from Georgia plantations in the 1800s using a mix of safe houses, secret routes, and an actual subterranean-train system.

YogaQuest Continues: Dungeons & Dragons

When: Tuesday, March 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Dungeons & Dragons, so prepare to level up your nerdy yoga game. This event costs $15.

Tea and Meeples: Winter Bonfire

What: Food & Drink, Community
When: Tuesday, March 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. Cozy up for the winter and warm up with a winter bonfire!

Tape Freaks March

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Trylon Cinema

Come to Tape Freaks’ monthly mystery-movie showing at the Trylon. Every month, Tape Freaks—a local film society focused on the VHS era—presents a mystery movie based on a certain genre or theme, and March 2018 will focus on Creature Features! Tickets are $5.

Second Thursday Game Night: Women’s Day

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, March 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store’s monthly Second Thursday Game Night—a monthly board game night—returns for Women’s Day. March 8th is International Women’s Day, and this game night will focus on games designed by women.

Dungeons & Dragons Thursdays

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, March 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Come to GlitchHQ on the second Thursday of every month for an open game of Dungeons & Dragons or Mouseguard, welcoming new and experienced players alike. The game is played in an open or sandbox style, so don’t worry about missing individual sessions for overarching story. Just show up, roll up, survive, and level up. Materials and rules provided.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, March 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Lego Building Night

What: Arts, Family
When: Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Chapel Comics & Collectibles Shop

Lego Building Night is a monthly night of Lego building for all ages, but mostly aimed at kids from 5–13. Participants are invited to work on sets, or free build. This is a free event, and the hosts will have Lego pieces available for use by participants!

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a belly-dance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card; free trial classes are available.

Nerd Out!!! March Edition

What: Meetup, Educational
When: Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: moto-i

Nerds of the Twin Cities hosts a monthly evening of informative guest speakers and mingling with other geeks. March’s event will feature three speakers and topics: “What is Sake Anyway?” from the great connoisseurs at moto-i, “Insight from a Brewmaster” from #1 Beer Fan, and followed up with “Willfully Fermenting with Honey.”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

When: Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m, Friday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, March 10th at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: James J. Hill House

While Hamlet is likely familiar to you, Wayward Theatre Co’s choice to bring the play outside of traditional theater settings is probably less so. Enjoy Shakespeare’s classic tragedy in a golden-age mansion and see the way that the space is used to realize themes of opulence and power inherent in Hamlet. Tickets are between $30 and $50, and this play will run through much of March.

Trivia Against Humanity

When: Thursday, March 8th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, March 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering Rivals of Ixalan FNM sealed event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award Reception

What: Books
When: Friday, March 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Open Book

This event is an opportunity to celebrate the winner of the Minnesota Book Artist Award presented by Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Book geeks will get an opportunity to hear from this year’s winner Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, and see her work The Love Affair, a mixed-media-sculptural book built from family love letters.

Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming

What: Gaming
When: Friday, March 9th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Tabletop-gaming geeks in the northwest reaches of the Twin Cities metro have a monthly home at Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming. This event is held at the Buffalo Community Center, and will play host to great tabletop-role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. Come check it out if you’re curious about RPGs, or are looking to make new gaming buddies.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Loud at the Library: Fathom Lane, with Almighty American

What: Meetup, Books, Nightlife
When: Friday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: George Latimer Central Library

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library concert series Loud at the Library continues its season on Friday with live local music from Fathom Lane, with Almighty American. You can get a free beer provided by Summit Brewing if you bring a current library card and tour the library’s Innovation Lab maker space before the show. This event is $10.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, March 9th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Härdsmälta Festival and Pond Skim

What: Sports & Fitness, Music, Food & Drink, Arts
When: Saturday, March 10th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Hyland Hills Ski Area

Härdsmälta is an annual pond skim (named after the Swedish word for meltdown) with free demos, a live DJ, food, beer, costumes, and more. Admission to this family-friendly event is free with two non-perishable food items. Learn about snow making and grooming, win some Hyland Hills swag, and participate in a costume contest.

Local Comic Book Night

What: Comics, Food & Drink, Family
When: Saturday, March 10th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing Co.

Beer! Local Comics Creators! Graphic Arts! Robots! This is a kid-friendly event that has it all for the local comics geek, and is curated by Chance Wyatt Picture Books (who will be signing copies of Planetarium), and will feature Superhero Art from Moneco Arts, Robot Caricatures by Scott Rolfs, Mega Man art by Alex J Irizarri, Horror Manga from Mushi, and additional work from Ellen Griffin, Rachel Topka, and Blaisdell designs. Oh—and don’t forget the robot-costume contest!

SlytherPuff Free Acoustic Show!

When: Saturday, March 10th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Enjoy a night of wizardly rock celebrating the end of the Accio Courage! 2018 Leadership Conference. This free concert features SlytherPuff, a wizard-rock-comedy duo who perform around the Twin Cities in celebration of Harry Potter. Space is limited so early arrival is encouraged.

Sasquatch Workshop & Brunch

When: Sunday, March 11th at 9:30 a.m.
Where: Uptown Heating & Cooling Community Gathering Space – Bryn Mawr

Satisfy a big appetite and fill big shoes at this brunch-creative workshop. The March 11th Brunch and Workshop will be hosted by Slap Happy Studios, and is aimed at finding and building creative ideas for a project about cryptozoology, bigfoots, sasquatches, yetis, and more. All creatives welcome!

Gender Jam: Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

What: Meetup, Community, Science & Technology
When: Sunday, March 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be taking a field trip out to the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. Either meet at The Exchange for a ride over, or meet up at the zoo itself at 1 p.m. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Refind Vintage Market

When: Sunday, March 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

Refind Vintage Market is a collaboration between Minneapolis Craft Market and vintage boutique The Keep, and hosts a selection of vintage traders in a pop-up market at Modist Brewing. Geek out to awesome vintage clothes, accessories, and home goods for spring. Traders include Arlee Park, Lighthorse Studios, The Vintage Modern Shop, and more.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Sunday Music at Waldmann

What: Music, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, March 11th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Anthony Waldmann House

Sunday Music at Waldmann is an event for fans of live music played on traditional-Czech-folk instruments, traditional beer, wurst, and historic saloons. This Sunday brunch begins at 1:30 p.m., and will feature music from the St. Paul South Bohemian Bagpipe Ensemble. Check out our piece on the Waldmann!
