\Welcome to Minnesota Dark Scene, your guide to goth events and gatherings in Minnesota for the month of April 2018. It’s a busy month for the scene, so let’s dive right in!

Special Events

Dark Energy Presents the Soft Moon with Boy Harsher and DJ Grant Mayland

What: Concert
When: Monday, April 2nd at 7:00 p.m
Where: Turf Club (St. Paul, MN)

Local dark electronic group Dark Energy brings the Soft Moon, a darkwave band out of Oakland, California; Boy Harsher out of Savannah, Georgia; and local DJ Grant Mayland to the stage for a 21+ night of darkwave, industrial, and great dancing. Tickets are $13.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door and can be purchased through the Turf Club online. Doors at 7:00 p.m., show at 8:00 p.m.

Kilted Farmer Koncerts Present Covenant (The Blinding Dark US Tour)

What: Concert
When: Wednesday, April 4th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall (St. Paul, MN)

Since 2004, Kilted Farmer Koncerts has been bringing excellent EBM, synthwave, and industrial bands to the Twin Cities, and this show is no exception. Covenant has been a staple in the goth music scene since 1986. Based out of Sweden, they bring dreamy lyrics, hard EBM, ambient synthwave, and an all-around amazing stage presence. They are on tour supporting their ninth studio album The Blinding Dark and have three local bands opening for them: Endless Blue from West Bend, Wisconsin, Sweat Boys from La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Le Hearse from Minneapolis. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door (21+). This is a show you don’t want to miss.

DJ Owen at Hard Mondays

What: Club Night
When: Monday, April 9th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Rouge at the Lounge (Minneapolis, MN)

Hard Mondays has been making the scene dance hard and harder for years, and they are now making their new home at Rouge at the Lounge on the second Monday of every month. This month features special guest DJ Owen, who is making a coast-to-coast DJ tour and has stopped by to make the night just that much better. Put on your best stompy boots and check out Hard Mondays. Cover is $3.00, and the event is 21+.

Dark Energy Presents Fade to Grey: A Tribute to (Dark) Synthpop and New Wave

What: Club Night
When: Saturday, April 7th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Kat Club (Minneapolis, MN)

Dark Energy’s monthly club night will be very ’80s West Berlin and New Romantic in theme, with Soft Cell, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, and more for getting your dance on. To add to the fun, dress up as your favorite new wave or synthpop icon, as there will be a costume contest with a prize for best dressed. This 21+ night will feature DJs Apollolypstic, Illuminaté Steele, and Grant Mayland; guest visuals by Jacqueline Castel from New York City; and a virtual-reality demon summoning ritual by Charlie Hunter. Cover is $5.00.

Absynthetic Productions Presents the Rain Within and Hexheart

When: Thursday, April 12th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Red Sea Restaurant and Bar (Minneapolis, MN)

The Twin Cities welcome back the Rain Within and welcome Hexheart for the first time ever. Special guest Zwaremachine rounds out a fantastic lineup of synthpop acts that will surely get the dance floor moving with aggressive twists to the ’80s sound. The Forbidden Bazaar: Unleash the Animals

What: Show
When: Friday, April 13th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Gay 90’s (Minneapolis, MN)

The Forbidden Bazaar is an almost dark vaudeville style show that brings together cabaret from Ass N Sass, a “puppy parade” by Bondesque, a dilettante fashion parade by Suit Up Saturday, aerial acrobatics by Angela Higgins, fire magic by Justice Draconis, and BDSM all fused together with music from DJs Noise, dv8, Spier, and Lorth. This bizarre bazaar will bring you bits of everything for an over-the-top fun show. Tickets are $10.00 for 21+ or $15.00 for 18+.

Rubber Ball USA 2018

What: Other Event
When: Saturday, April 14th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Historic Concord Exchange (South St. Paul, MN)

Rubber Ball USA and Bondesque are back with this year’s Rubber Ball. An amazing 21+ celebration of fetish culture with performers, models, and fashion, Rubber Ball delights from start to finish. The event features Jean Bardot, Mistress Hibiki from Japan, Mistress Botan, Sakura Rubberdoll, Elektra Cute, DJ Noise, and DJ Fenris. VIP-level entertainment is available. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $40.00 for general admission, $95.00 for Gold VIP. No photos are allowed except by authorized photographers.

Dark Energy Presents Pod Blotz and Vereker Plus Collin Gorman Weiland’s Record Release Party

What: Concert
When: Saturday, April 14th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Heavy Attic (message Dark Energy on Facebook for details on this super-secret new locale)

The official release party for local musician Collin Gorman Weiland‘s new album, Jealous God, this party will also have Pod Blotz out of Los Angeles and Vereker from Chicago to keep the energy going all evening. DJs Angelica Ottavia and Grant Mayland will keep spinning between sets so you never need to stop dancing.

When: Wednesday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Coffee Shop Northeast (Minneapolis, MN)

A quiet coffee klatch for the goth in all of us. Come out for conversation, board and card games, and of course coffee. You might even hear some new information regarding Goth Prom in the process. GothiCoffee, organized by the Twin Cities Elysium Society, is generally on the third Wednesday of each month.

Weekly Events

She’s in Control: The History of Goth and Alternative Culture

What: Radio Show
When: Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. and repeated on Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.; special interview with Boy Harsher on Tuesday, April 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
Where: 98.9 FM or online at KRSM Radio

DJ Mercury brings you the musical and pop-culture history of the goth and alternative scene in her one-hour show for the Southside Media Project. Blending interviews, history, and music to tie it all together makes her show one to catch. This month, she has a special interview with Boy Harsher, who is in town for a concert (see above).

Transmission with DJ Jake Rudh

What: Club Night
When: Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown Minneapolis VFW (Minneapolis, MN)

For 17 years, DJ Jake Rudh has been bringing the best of ’80s new wave and synthpop to the clubs every Wednesday (and more recently to the airwaves on the Current every Thursday). Transmission is an amazing night of music, videos, dancing, and ’80s nostalgia for all fans, and there are people who have met and gotten married thanks to this unparalleled night of music. Come out and see what it’s all about, you won’t regret it. This event is 21+ and free!

Across the Board with DJ SLT

What: Radio Show
When: Friday Mornings from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ SLT has been bringing his wide-ranging musical interests to KFAI for over 10 years. His show features anything and everything from ’70s glam rock to EBM, industrial, pop, and all the David Bowie you never knew existed. He frequently has theme nights, guest hosts, collaborations, and collectors’ corners to make a varied and greatly interesting radio show worth staying awake for. He also plays his own original works under the name Kradis.

Bondage A-Go-Go

What: Club Night
When: Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis, MN)

Ground Zero has been the goth community’s mainstay for nearly 24 years. Today it is the best place to grab a drink and dance to the best music the goth world has to offer (and some it hasn’t). With three rotating DJs keeping the music fresh and interesting, it sets the scene for what’s going on in the back—where the in-house dominatrixes keep your blood pumping with safe and consensual scenes you can either watch or participate in (after signing up, staying sober until your time, and tipping the mistress). No photos, 21+, $7.00 cover, cash-only bar. Come casual or dress to impress.
