Creative Night

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

MN Opera at Books & Bars

What: Books, Music
When: Tuesday, April 24th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: The Happy Gnome

Books & Bars, an open book club led by Jeff Kamin, will welcome special guests including Minnesota Opera President and General Director Ryan Taylor. Enjoy food, social lubrication, and enlightening conversation about books relating to MN Opera’s 55th season. For April, the club will be discussing All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. RSVP ahead of time online.

Boardgames at Clockwerks Brewing

Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Boardgames at Clockwerks Brewing is a monthly meeting of the Downtown Minneapolis Board and Card Games meetup group. This is a great chance to learn new games, teach some of your old favorites to new folks, and enjoy Clockwerks, a steampunk-themed brewery with great rotating beers.

Tea and Meeples: Board Games: Travel Japan

Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, cozy up with a book and enjoy some gaming with friends. The dinner this week will be vegetable curry.

YogaQuest Continues: Labyrinth

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, April 24th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest (new location: 6640 Lyndale Avenue S, Suite 110)

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Labyrinth, so get ready to Dance Magic, Dance! This event costs $15.

Beers and DevSecOps with GitHub & Sonatype

What: Meetup, Science & Technology, Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 25th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

Craft-beer fans and people interested in the world of DevSecOps are invited to this lightning talk about DevSecOps automation with Sonatype and GitHub at Surly. The event will include social time, a brewery tour, an introduction to the topic, and social time. This is a great opportunity to learn about an exciting tech field!

SciSpark 2018

When: Wednesday, April 25th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: University of Minnesota St. Paul Student Center

Celebrate women in the sciences and learn with lightning talks regarding a variety of science topics, hands-on science activities, and a panel on gender equality and STEM. This is a free event, so come on down, learn, and celebrate women in science.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday: Staring Contests

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. This month’s event has a special guest host, Jason from the CONsole Room team.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. St. Paul Art Crawl

When: Friday April 27th at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday, April 29th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Locations throughout St. Paul

Take advantage of the Minnesota-spring weather and crawl through St. Paul, exploring all that it has to offer in the way of art and artists studios! This event sprawls throughout the city, with over 30 locations and hundreds of participating artists throughout the weekend. There will be live music, artist demonstrations, participatory events, studio tours, and more. Check out the event’s website for details on locations, schedules, parking, and more.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, April 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: the Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

The Faithful Sidekicks

When: Friday, April 27th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dunn Brothers Anoka

Rock out, geek out, and have a hilarious and fun night at the Anoka Dunn Brothers with The Faithful Sidekicks! This free event caters to geeks of all stripes, so expect songs about awesome geeky stuff such as Star Wars, Star Trek, gaming, cats, computers, coffee, and more.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, April 27th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Let’s Get Physical: Vilification Tennis Would Hit That Gym

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, April 27th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilification Tennis will be getting physical with this night of lean and mean comedy. Watch as the Vilification Tennis “pumps some comedy iron,” for a night of laughs! This show is $15, or $12 in advance.

Halfway to Halloween 2018

What: Music, Nightlife
When: Friday, April 27th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

Halloween is a mere six months away! Celebrate the halfway point to the most excellent spooky holiday with a night of dancing, ’80s and ’90s music, and the kind of decorations you’ll only see at Ground Zero. There will be a 21+ cash bar with two-for-one drink specials up until 11:30 p.m. Costumes are strongly encouraged for this night of spooky debauchery, so tickets will be $5 for those who come in costume, and $8 for anyone who comes in civilian clothes.

Kiki & Coral’s Cosplay, Craft, & Geekery Pop-Up Shop!

When: Saturday, April 28th at 8:00 a.m.
Where: 657 40th Ave NE Columbia Heights, MN 55421

Get your hands on a variety of geeky goodies, including cosplay supplies (wigs, props, costumes, and more), art, geeky crafts, video games, and board games. It’ll be a beautiful day for geeky shopping, so come on in and get ready for convention season! Per the event listing, enter through the basement door on Madison Street (follow the signs).

Summer Flower Show Opening Weekend

When: Saturday, April 28th and Sunday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

Blooms of pink and white will dominate the Summer Flower Show at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory! Opening weekend will be a great chance to take a look at an array of warm blooming plants, and the Sunken Garden Flower Shows. This is a family friendly spring event.

Civil Engineering Day

What: Education, Science & Technology
When: Saturday, April 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Learn about the massive engineering projects that keep our modern society ticking, like bridges, buildings, and more. Meet civil engineers and take part in activities related to civil engineering challenges, and take in Dream Big: Engineering Our World at the Omnitheater to round out your experience. Entry requires an exhibit-admission ticket; entry to Dream Big: Engineering Our World is an additional ticket.

Prior Affair – Spring Craft Fair

When: Saturday, April 28th and Sunday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Prior Affair

Let spring bloom with a weekend full of art, community, and music hosted in a transit-accessible location (a short walk from the Fairview stop on the Greenline). This is a great opportunity to meet folks from the local creative community, support their endeavors, and see all the cool stuff that they create!

International Tabletop Day 2018

What: Gaming, Community, Family
When: Saturday, April 28th (all day)
Where: Minneapolis Central Library, the Commons Meeting Room

Join gamers throughout the world to celebrate International Tabletop Day, a global celebration of games played at the table with friends. This event will be hosted at a number of Twin Cities retailers, including the Minneapolis Central Library, The Source Comics and Games, Tower Games, the Fantasy Flight Games Center, and others. Find the closest spot to you!

Independent Bookstore Day 2018

When: Saturday, April 28th (all day)
Where: Independent bookstores everywhere

Every year, the last Saturday in April celebrates indie bookstores, and almost every store in Minnesota has something planned—from sales and giveaways, to author appearances and kid-friendly activities. Wright County Geeks Sci-Fi Saturday

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Northwest Metro sci-fi and fantasy geeks—come on down to the Buffalo Community Center for a casual meetup. The event typically starts off with an informal discussion of games, films, books, TV, and graphic novels before voting on what to watch. This is a very low-key event, and is steered by the interests of attendees.

Geek Slink & Drink: Dark Carnival

What: Comedy & Theater, Arts, Music
When: Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Geek Slink & Drink brings its mix of comedy, dance, and geekiness back to the Bryant Lake Bowl for Dark Carnival, a steampunk-inspired show filled with Tesla-coil robots, dancing dolls, sword dancing, and death-defying pole performers. Tickets are 12$ in advance, or $15 at the door. Steampunk costumes are encouraged!

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, April 28th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio (515 Lake Street)

This mixed-level belly dance class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including Tribal Fusion, Greek, American-Egyptian, and world fusion, and is taught by Shannon (who readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and are built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Classes are $15.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam: Chuck E. Cheese

What: Meetup, Community, Music
When: Sunday, April 29th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week Gender Jam will be heading over to Chuck E. Cheese for an afternoon of pizza, gaming, and fun! As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Discussion of Madeleine L’Engle’s Wrinkle In Time Trilogy

When: Sunday, April 29th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Pizza Longfellow

Second Foundation, a Twin Cities group dedicated to the discussion of SF (Science Fiction or Speculative Fiction), will be meeting to discuss Madeleine L’Engle’s Wrinkle in Time trilogy. This is a great opportunity for thoughtful discussion with fellow fans, and timely due to the recent film adaptation.
