Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 21st to Sunday, May 27th.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, May 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, May 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Supernatural Trivia at BlackStack

What: Trivia
When: Monday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Supernatural fans will have a night to prove their intimate knowledge of the show in a great brewery with Supernatural trivia at Blackstack. Blackstack Brewing is a local brewery known for hosting pop-culture and fandom-based trivia and often holds these events on Mondays, so follow BlackStack for similar events in the future. Costumes are always encouraged.

Game Tester Night: Pairs and Tak

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Tabletop Tester night returns to Clockwerks Brewing for a night of experimental fun (and local beers). This month, there are two games on offer: Pairs, a fast-paced, art-filled card game, and Tak, an elegant and abstract two-player strategy game. Every attendee will receive a free book of Pairs variant games.

Minnesota Twins Star Wars Night

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:10 p.m.
Where: Target Field

Get ready for the Solo: A Star Wars Story with a night of Star Wars fun with the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers! Expect to see characters from the saga, special giveaways, and more; the first 10,000 fans through the gates will get a special Twins Star Wars T-shirt. Tea and Meeples: Board Games: On a Rail

When: Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, enjoy some rail-focused board games while enjoying a dinner of beans and rice.

YogaQuest Continues: Sherlock: “The Abominable Bride”

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is the Sherlock special “The Abominable Bride.” This event costs $15.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. Celebrate two years of Wibbly Wobbly Trivia and the upcoming arrival of the 13th Doctor with this special night.

The Mads Are Back

What: Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, May 23rd and Thursday, May 24th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame return to Minneapolis for two nights of bad movie riffing. Both are accomplished comedy writers and performers in their own right (with diverse credits running from head writer on Invader Zim to a recurring role in Freaks and Geeks) but are best known to MST3K fans as Crow T. Robot, Dr. Clayton Forrester, and TV’s Frank. Tickets are $22.

CoreCon X

What: Convention
When: Thursday, May 24th at 12:00 p.m. to Sunday, May 27th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Holiday Inn, 3803 13th Avenue South, Fargo, ND

CoreCon X is a science-fiction, fantasy, anime, and horror convention held in the Fargo area, so is a great event for Western Minnesota, and North Dakota Geeks. This is a great opportunity to see special guests like Jennifer Cihi and Stefanie DeLeo, take part in a costume contest, game, and more. Preregistration is closed, but tickets will be available at the desk starting at $50 for adults, with day passes and discount rates for children available.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. When: Friday, May 25th at 2:00 p.m. to Sunday, May 27th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Hilton Airport Mall of America

MantiCon is a science-fiction and fantasy literature convention with a mix of panels, distinguished guests like David Weber, Eric Flint, Marko Kloos and Timothy Zahn, gaming, movies, and more. The convention bills itself as intimate and has plenty of opportunities to socialize, including room parties and more. Registration costs vary but start at $65; see the website for more details. Registration and a limited number of events will occur Friday before 2:00 p.m.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, May 25th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Tipsy Kangaroo’s Naughty Puppet Revue

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, May 25th and Saturday May 26th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Experimental Thinking Centre

Do you need a raunchy and bizarre behind the scenes look at the world of professional puppet television? If so, come on down for a night of comedy that is live, filmed, and behind the scenes at the same time. Witness the “adult” things puppets get up to between takes and take in some great improv. Tickets are $20. This event is not intended for children under the age of 16.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, May 25th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Ladyfriend at Huge Improv Theater

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, May 25th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: HUGE Improv Theater

Ladyfriend is a “three-human comedy group” known for improv, creating fun videos, and enjoying candy. Becky Wilkinson Hauser, Beth K. Gibbs, and Jen van Kaam will show you what new worlds can be built when three charming weirdo BFFs share the stage, so prepare to be delighted. General-admission tickets are $10.

Be Our Guest!: Vilification Tennis Sings Disney

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, May 25th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilification Tennis, a local structured improv show focused on insult contests, will return to the Bryant-Lake Bowl for a night of Disney songs twisted in dark directions and beyond recognition. Tickets are $15, or $12 with a Minnesota Fringe button. Minneapolis Open Weekend

When: Saturday, May 26th and Sunday, May 27th from 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

Magic: The Gathering takes over the Minneapolis Convention Center this weekend. This tournament features “Modern Open on Saturday, Modern and Standard Classics on Sunday, and a full schedule of side events all weekend long!”

Gaming for Good

What: Gaming, Community
When: Saturday, May 26th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Lodestone Coffee and Games

Game for a good cause with Lodestone Coffee and Games’ 24-hour board-game marathon. All donations and 10 percent of sales during this event will benefit Planned Parenthood, an organization that helps millions of people around the world with reproductive health. Open gaming will be going on all 24 hours, and there will be themed events throughout the day, culminating in a large game of Two Rooms Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.

Wright County Geeks Sci-Fi Saturday

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Northwest metro sci-fi and fantasy geeks, come on down to the Buffalo Community Center for a casual meetup. The event typically starts off with an informal discussion of games, films, books, TV, and graphic novels before voting on what to watch. This is a very low-key event and is steered by the interests of attendees. Per the website, the loose topic for May is superscience.

Erotic Fan Fiction: The Game Show

What: Comedy & Theater
When: Saturday, May 26th at 10:30 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

Fearless Presents is a monthly showcase from Fearless Comedy Productions focusing on a different comedy act every month. This month, the focus will be Erotic Fan Fiction. Watch a combo of smut, improv, sketches, and more as performers speculate wildly over fictional characters’ sex lives. Tickets are $12.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, May 26th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes and are built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, May 20th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam: Dreamers Vault

What: Meetup, Community, Comics, Arts, Gaming
When: Sunday, May 27th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis/Dreamers Vault

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week, Gender Jam will be hanging out at Dreamers Vault, a local shop for games, comics, and more. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.
