Creative Night

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Youth Pride 2018

What: Community, Family
When: Tuesday, May 8th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Park

Youth Pride 2018 is a day of free food, entertainment, and education for high-school age LGBTQIA+ and Allied youth.

Beer & Board Games

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Angry Inch Brewery

Are you in the south metro and a fan of beer, board games, or both? If so, this Tuesday night event is for you! Sponsored by AvidGeek and 2D Con, this event lets you enjoy a wide range of tabletop, board, and card games, and bring your own to share as well. Entry to the event is $5 (cash only).

Tea and Meeples: Board Games: Modern Art

When: Tuesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. Friendly competition is the name of the game this week, so come on down for some board games and fun. The dinner this week will be squash stew.

YogaQuest Continues: Doctor Who, “The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances”

When: Tuesday, May 8th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest (new location: 6640 Lyndale Avenue S, Suite 110)

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This themes for this week are the Doctor Who episodes “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances,” so watch out for spooky kids wearing gas masks. This event costs $15.

Magic: the Gathering Tournament at Modist

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, May 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

Get your game on in a great Minneapolis brewery at this Magic: the Gathering tournament supported by Dreamers Vault Games. This will be a booster-draft tournament with a 21+ age limit and a $15 entry fee. Dominaria cards will be used, and the prize will be one pack per win, plus a crowler from Modist for the undefeated player.

TC Trek Trivia: Things That Make You Go BOOM

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

Dungeons & Dragons Thursdays

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, May 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Come to GlitchHQ on the second Thursday of every month for an open game of Dungeons & Dragons or Mouse Guard, welcoming new and experienced players alike. The game is played in an open or sandbox style, so don’t worry about missing individual sessions for overarching story—just show up, roll up, survive, and level up! Materials and rules provided.

Lego Building Night

What: Arts, Family
When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Chapel Comics & Collectibles Shop

Lego Building Night is a monthly night of Lego building for all ages, but mostly aimed at kids from 5–13. Participants are invited to work on sets, or free build. This is a free event, and the hosts will have Lego pieces available for use by participants!

Nerd Out!!! May Edition

The Nerds of the Twin Cities hosts a monthly evening of informative guest speakers and mingling with other geeks. May’s event will feature three speakers and topics: “Magic Circles Curiously Drawn: Mystics and Science in Renaissance Fencing” from Alexander Greff, “The Knight in Shining Armor: Medieval and Renaissance Armor in History, Literature, and the Modern Imagination” from Amanda Taylor, and “From Impenetrable Armor to Guns that Shoot Without a Sign: Household Manuscript Recipe Books and DIY Metalworking in Early Modern Italy” from Emily Beck. This event is free.

Books & Bars: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things

When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books/Geek Love Cafe

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood, a story of unlikely love.

Beauty & the Beast

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 12th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Where: Ames Center

Return to a tale as old as time with Twin Cities Ballet’s rendition on Beauty & the Beast. Expect an original story adaptation and a new take on this classic tale from Denise Vogt, with music from Jordan Cox. This event promises fun for the whole family, with enchanting stage design, costumes, choreography, and more. Tickets range from $20–36; see event site for pricing details.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity

When: Thursday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. CONsole Room 2018

When: Friday, May 11th at 1:00 p.m. to Sunday May 13th at 6::00 p.m.
Where: Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Mall of America

CONsole Room is the premiere gathering space for Twin Cities Whovians and the area’s only convention devoted to fans of Doctor Who! Come on down for panels, costume contests, art, special guests (like Dan Starkey and Catrin Stewart), a TARDIS escape room, and more. Preregistration has ended, but you can still get in at the door, with weekend passes running at $90 for adults; one-day passes are also available.

Bad Weather Outdoor Arcade

What: Gaming, Food & Drink, Music, Family
When: Friday, May 11th at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 12th at 12:00 p.m., Sunday, May 13th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing Co.

Bad Weather Brewing Company’s weekend-long outdoor arcade party returns with beer, food trucks, DJs, and tents full of classic arcade games, skiball, pinball, ping pong, and more! This is a kid-friendly event, and entry to the brewery is free, with $5 getting you unlimited access to the games. The parking lot will be used to hold the game tents, so plan rides accordingly.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: the Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming

What: Gaming
When: Friday, May 11th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Tabletop-gaming geeks in the northwest reaches of the Twin Cities metro have a monthly home at Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming. This event is held at the Buffalo Community Center, and will play host to great tabletop-role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and others. Come check it out if you’re curious about RPGs, or are looking to make new gaming buddies.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Ladyfriend at Huge Improv Theater

When: Friday, May 11th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Huge Improv Theater

Ladyfriend is a “three-human comedy group,” known for improv, creating fun videos, and enjoying candy. Becky Wilkinson Hauser, Beth K. Gibbs, and Jen van Kaam will show you what new worlds can be built when three charming weirdo BFFs share the stage, so prepare to be delighted. General admission tickets are $10.

Free Video Game Day/Customer Appreciation Sale at Heroic Goods

What: Gaming, Community
When: Saturday, May 12th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Heroic Goods & Games

Heroic Goods & Games will be hosting a customer appreciation day video-game giveaway. The more customers there are that RSVP to the event, the more bags they will prepare, with at least one video game per bag (in addition to coupons, etc). This is a real thing! Come on down and support a store that truly appreciates its customers.

Anime Prom

When: Saturday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Brookdale Library – 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway

Brookdale Library’s Teen Geekery Club will be hosting a prom night to delight all the otakus, with cosplay, games, anime, and music. Dance the night away in costume with your fellow geeky teens! This event is free, and will last until 9:00 p.m.

GLITCH’s Birthday Bash: 8th Ed.

When: Saturday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler Brewing Co.

GLITCH is turning eight! Celebrate eight years of gaming goodness and community spaces with them at Urban Growler, with an arcade, presents, donuts, beer, a photo booth, and event samples including virtual reality and Dungeons & Dragons.

Saturday Night Space Opera: Space Scoundrels

When: Saturday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Local sci-fi RPG night Saturday Night Space Opera returns with a night celebrating our favorite space scoundrels, specifically focused on Guardians of the Galaxy (played using the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying rules), and Star Wars (using the old West End Games Star Wars rules). This is a free event, all rules will be taught, and no materials are required—just RSVP on the website to snag your spot.

#TwitterProm at Amsterdam Bar and Hall

What: Nightlife, Community
When: Saturday, May 12th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Get dressed and enjoy an adult prom to replace or improve upon your experiences from youth, while benefiting Children’s Hospital and Clinics. The theme is an undersea apocalypse, to help folks process their fears of looming nuclear hellfire. Per the event listing, this event got started as folks chatting about their own prom experiences on Twitter, and grew into a real full-fledged event. Attendees do not need to have Twitter accounts, and this is a 21+ event, so some of the punch will be alcoholic.

SubText: A Bookstore – The May Tweetup

When: Sunday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: SubText: A Bookstore

Book and publishing geeks come on down for the chance to network with other literati in a great St. Paul bookstore! This event is supported by the Author’s Guild and the MN Publishing Tweetup.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio (515 Lake Street)

This mixed-level belly dance class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including Tribal Fusion, Greek, American-Egyptian, and world fusion, and is taught by Shannon (who readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and are built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Classes are $15.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam: Trans Yoga

What: Meetup, Community, Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, May 13th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week, Gender Jam will be staying at the Exchange for a centering afternoon of Trans Yoga, which will be open to folks of all physical abilities. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.
