Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 18th to Sunday, June 24th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Human Combat Chess 2018

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, June 18th at 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 22nd at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 23rd at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Where: Christ Church Lutheran

As geeks, we seem to be drawn to imaginary sports such as quidditch, zero-g laser tag, brutal-blood sports involving child tributes, and podracing, so come and see the greatest sport that never was: Human Combat Chess. This game looks like chess on the surface, but unlike chess, the results of moves are not certain and come down to choreographed fights between the human pieces involved. Tea and Meeples: Board Games

What: Food & Drink, Community, Gaming
When: Tuesday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, the group will get together for a night of gaming and enjoy a dinner of veggie burgers.

YogaQuest Continues: Jurassic World

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, June 19th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is Jurassic World, so come develop the flexibility and core strength to escape dinosaurs. This event costs $15.

Trash Film Debauchery: Turkish Star Trek

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

If Star Trek: Discovery has you craving more Original Series-era Trek goodness, come join Trash Film Debauchery in celebrating Star Trek by watching Turkish remakes of episodes, including “The Man Trap.” Tickets are $5, and this is the final screening in Trash Film Debauchery’s Turkish-remakes series. and this time, the organizers promise there will be English subtitles.

When: Wednesday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Steamship Coffee

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

MidSummer’s Night Party with Goat Yoga!

What: Sports & Fitness, Community
When: Thursday, June 21st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Tiny Diner

Celebrate the solstice, and let the stresses of the world around you bleat away with the most joyous things: goats and yoga. Goat Shine hosts this event, and will be facilitating your interactions with the adorable goats. In addition to goats, expect live music, and a variety of fun activities centered on going “around the sun.”

Co-Op Talk

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, June 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly discussion of interactive media and digital games. The event begins with a short refreshment and snack time to mingle and chat, followed by this month’s discussion topic “Character Creator: Writing the Authentic, Diverse, & Compelling,” led by Beth Korth. Get to know other gaming enthusiasts, and dig deep into the topic with this event.

Back to The Future Trivia at Wander North Distillery

What: Trivia, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Wander North Distillery

Great Scott! Prove your Back to The Future knowledge with this trivia event from Wander North Distillery! The trivia will focus on the events depicted in the film—not on the production, or creatives involved in the production. Come with teams of up to six to this free-to-play event, with prizes for the winning teams.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, June 21st at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Caucasian Aggressive Pandas and Other Mulatto Tales

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, June 21st, Friday, June 22nd, and Saturday, June 23rd at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, June 24th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Bloomington Center for the Arts

Storytelling and sketch comedy come together to confront, mock, and dismantle racism, racists, and stereotypes in this exploration of the mixed-race experience. Inspired by the personal experiences of playwright Duck Washington, this event uses humor as a way to understand concepts with a degree of depth. Tickets are $25, with discounts available. This performance will continue through June, and is produced in collaboration with Fearless Comedy Productions.

Movies in the Parks: Thor: Ragnarok

What: Movies, Community, Family
When: Thursday, June 21st at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Currie Park

Enjoy an evening of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public, and screening this week is Thor: Ragnarok, a colorful and funny space adventure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that manages to be thoughtful while also exciting. Bringing a blanket or lawn chair is recommended, and children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Tipsy Kangaroo’s Naughty Puppet Revue

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 22nd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Experimental Thinking Centre

Do you need a raunchy and bizarre behind-the-scenes look at the world of professional puppet television? If so, come on down for a night of comedy that is live, filmed, and behind the scenes at the same time. Witness the “adult” things puppets get up to between takes, and enjoy some great improv. Tickets are $20, and this event is not intended for children under the age of 16.

The Vilification Tennis Battle of the Sexes

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 22nd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilification Tennis, a local structured improv show focused on insult contests, will return to the Bryant-Lake Bowl for a night of comedy contests with teams divided along gender identities. Men, women, and non-binary folks will compete for bragging rights. Tickets are $15, or $12 with a Minnesota Fringe button.

Twin Cities Pride Festival

What: Community
When: Saturday, June 23rd at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, June 24th at 6:00 p.m
Where: Loring Park

Gather with the LGBTQ+ community and allies in Loring Park for Twin Cities Pride. There will be hundreds of booths, dozens of food vendors, along with free musical performances and fun for the whole family. There are a variety of other Pride-related activities going on throughout the weekend, including a parade on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., the Rainbow Run 5K, and more. The Twin Cities Pride website is a great central location to find Pride events that may be relevant to your interests. There will be a number of organizations present, including NARAL.

Personal Storytelling

What: Comedy & Theater, Educational, Community
When: Sunday, June 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Hosmer Library

Storytelling is an ancient tradition that has persisted through many cultures. Learn to tell your personal story with the help of an expert from the Guthrie. No experience is necessary for this personal-storytelling class. Preregister online for this class with the link provided above. There are a limited number of seats, so make sure to sign up if interested.

Books and Beer Pop-up Bookstore

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 23rd at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Brewing Co.

Are you a local book geek? Are you a local beer geek? Bring those two geekdoms together for the Books and Beer Pop-up Bookstore, an event celebrating local authors in a well-known local brewery that has consistently presented great local beer for years. See more than a dozen local authors, including the Peace and Social Justice Writers Group at the Loft.

Wright County Geeks Sci-Fi Saturday

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Northwest metro sci-fi and fantasy geeks: Come on down to the Buffalo Community Center for a casual meetup. The event typically starts off with an informal discussion of games, films, books, TV, and graphic novels before voting on what to watch. This is a very low-key event and is steered by the interests of attendees. Per the group’s website, the loose topic for May is The Desert, so perhaps expect some sandworms or sarlaccs.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 24th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
