Summer Games Done Quick 2018

What: Gaming, Conventions, Community
When: Monday, June 25th–Sunday, July 1st
Where: Doubletree Hilton – Bloomington MN

Support Doctors Without Borders while watching some of the best speedrunners around at Summer Games Done Quick. This event is a series of video-game tournaments that has raised over $14 million for charity to date. There will be a packed schedule of video-game speedruns, running the gamut from new classics like 2016’s Doom, to old classics like Castlevania. Preregistration is closed, but check out their website to reach out to the event planners if you are interested, or to see a full schedule of events.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, June 25th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

The Monster Science Ensemble: Loveliest of All Was the Unicorn

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, June 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

Celebrate the loveliest of all beasts with the all-powerful Monster Science Ensemble! The Ensemble will enlighten with poems, songs, and dances focused on the loveliest and most-magical fantastic beast: the Unicorn. This event features the talents of Kate Kunkel Bailey, Hawona Sullivan Janzen, Nissa Nordland Morgan, Heather Jeanne Rand-McKay, Mickaylee Shaughnessy, Natalie Rae Wass, Tim Wick, Bryan Thao Worra, Jena Young, and is hosted by Reverend Matt. This is a free event, so educate yourself.

Movies in the Parks: Wonder Woman

What: Movies, Community, Family
When: Monday, June 25th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Beltrami Park

Enjoy an evening of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Wonder Woman, a historical action-adventure film with a strong dose of empowerment from the DC Universe. Bringing a blanket or lawn chair is recommended, and children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tea and Meeples: Yard Games

What: Food & Drink, Community, Gaming
When: Tuesday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, the group will get together for a night of outdoor games and enjoy a dinner of grilled veggie kebabs.

YogaQuest Continues: Captain America: Civil War

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, June 26th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is Captain America: Civil War, so it’s a good time to decide if you’re either on Team Cap or Team Iron Man if you haven’t done that yet. This event costs $15.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-themed trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. This month’s theme is “Put Some Captain in You,” so expect a focus on Captain Jack Harkness.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Print Matters

What: Books
When: Friday, June 29th at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 29th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds

This new summer book fair is to be held at the Progress Center on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, and is supported by Rain Taxi. Come on down to see great collectible books, first editions, maps, prints, pulp fiction, vinyl, and other offerings. There will also be activities like a scavenger hunt, letterpress coasters, music, a paper-art exhibit, a giant word cross, and much more. Friday entry is $10 and gets you a first look at the selection along with special activities, and admission on Saturday is free.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, June 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Tipsy Kangaroo’s Naughty Puppet Revue

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 29th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Experimental Thinking Centre

Do you need a raunchy and bizarre behind-the-scenes look at the world of professional puppet television? If so, come on down for a night of comedy that is live, filmed, and behind the scenes at the same time! Witness the “adult” things puppets get up to between takes, and enjoy some great improv. Tickets are $20, and this event is not intended for children under the age of 16.

Human Combat Chess 2018

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 29th at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 30th at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Where: Christ Church Lutheran

As geeks, we seem to be drawn to imaginary sports such as quidditch, zero-g laser tag, brutal blood sports involving child tributes, and podracing, so come and see the greatest sport that never was: Human Combat Chess. This game looks like chess on the surface, but unlike chess, the results of moves are not certain and come down to choreographed fights between the human pieces involved. Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, June 29th 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

St. Cloud Comic Con

What: Comics, Gaming, Arts, Family
When: Saturday, June 30th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: St. Cloud Public Library

Get your summer geek on in St. Cloud with an event focused on anime, crafts, D&D, Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, trivia, artist panels, prizes, Yoga Quest, and more! There will be a number of special guests in attendance, including Jaime Coker, Ryan Schepp, Heidi Jeub, Jonathan D. Wilson, and Steffany Schmit. This is a family-friendly event and costumes are strongly encouraged, so get creative!

Adult Swim on the Green: Minneapolis

What: Arts, Food & Drink, Gaming, Comedy & Theater
When: Saturday, June 30th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Commons, Minneapolis

Adult Swim, the Cartoon Network-affiliated creator of geek favorites like Rick & Morty, Sealab 2021, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, will be returning to the Twin Cities for an evening of promotional screenings, unaired episodes, games, prizes, local vendors, and activities. This is a great way to combine being outside and around people with the act of consuming comedy TV. Tickets are $10 for open seating in advance, or $15 day of.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Summer Pick-Up Quidditch

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Sunday, July 1st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Thomas Beach – Bde Maka Ska

Enjoy a summer morning outdoors playing the greatest sport in the wizarding world: quidditch! This event is hosted by the Twin Cities Quidditch Club, and is a great opportunity to get some exercise, make some great Harry Potter-loving friends, and catch that golden snitch!

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, July 1st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 1st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
