Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 2nd to Sunday, July 8th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, July 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Paul Verhoeven in Exile: Total Recall

What: Movies
When: Monday, July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.
Where: The Trylon

Paul Verhoeven spent much of the ’80s and ’90s in the United States, putting together a slew of geek favorites that were frequently ultra violent, satirical, over sexed, and highly imaginative. The Trylon will be celebrating these works in July, and this week they will be screening a rare 35-millimeter print of Total Recall, an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle about espionage, mutants, Mars, rebellion, memory, and robot cabdrivers. Tickets are $8, so “get your ass to Mars.”

Tea and Meeples: Board Games

What: Food & Drink, Community, Gaming
When: Tuesday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, the group will get together for a night of board games and enjoy a dinner of spaghetti.

YogaQuest Continues: Parks and Rec

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, July 3rd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is Parks and Rec, so fill yourself with civic pride. This event costs $15.

Independence Day Celebration

What: Educational
When: Wednesday, July 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fort Snelling

Celebrate the birthday of this nation with a variety of ceremonies, military parades, and learning opportunities. There are activities throughout the day, including fife lessons, mock battles, and chances to learn about the struggles for freedom of all Americans, including enslaved peoples, Native Americans, and women. Tickets are $6-12.

CONvergence 2018

What: Convention
When: Thursday, July 5th at 12:00 p.m. to Sunday, July 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton

CONvergence is an annual four-day convention for fans of sci fi and fantasy of all kinds. The event has a different theme every year, and this year’s theme is “Natural Twenty,” and celebrates the 20-year critical hit that CONvergence has been for the geek community. In addition to panels, cosplay, room parties, and many new guests and returning fan favorites, we’ll be there as well! Twin Cities Geek will have a fan table set up outside Mainstage, and Twin Cities Geek/Fearless Comedy Productions badge backers are back for 2018 and can be picked up at registration or the fan table for free while they last. You can also check out the TCG Twitter feed all weekend for tweets and updates on panels featuring Twin Cities Geek contributors. There’re a wide variety of ways to get involved with this event, so check out the event’s website to see where you fit in!

Lego Building Night

When: Thursday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Chapel Comics & Collectibles Shop

Lego Building Night is a monthly night of Lego building for all ages, but mostly aimed at kids from 5–13. Participants are invited to work on sets, or free build. This is a free event, and the hosts will have Lego pieces available for use by participants!

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

One-Shot Comics: Maggie the Mechanic

When: Thursday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics, a monthly comic series devoted to covering a diverse range of comics and graphic novels, returns with a discussion of Maggie the Mechanic, the very beginning of the epic comic series Love and Rockets, showing the “earliest, punkiest, most heavily sci-fi stories,” from the series. One-Shot Comics strives toward the goals of “creating an inclusive space” and “perpetual awesomeness.” As usual, you can pick up a copy for 20% off at Moon Palace Books.

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Movies in the Parks: Spider-Man: Homecoming

What: Movies, Community, Family
When: Thursday, July 5th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Jackson Square Park

Enjoy an evening of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Spider-Man: Homecoming, a coming-of-age story from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bringing a blanket or lawn chair is recommended, and children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, July 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, July 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical-mech combat! The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop-mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

What: Movies
When: Friday July 6th and Saturday, July 7th at 11:30 p.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

The Riverview Theater, a neighborhood theater known for cheap second-run cinema, will be continuing its summer late-night programming series with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the visually stunning and award-winning Wuxia epic from Ang Lee. All tickets are $3, and the theater only takes cash.

GPS UGG Open Gaming at Fantasy Flight Games Center

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, July 7th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open-gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Bronze-Age Sword Casting

What: Educational, Arts
When: Saturday, July 7th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: 3749 Chicago Ave

Learn the art and science of Bronze-Age sword making at this informative event in south Minneapolis! There are two parts of this class: one focused on making a wooden blank sword and the other focused on actually casting that sword out of aluminum, and you’ll finish up by wrapping both of these swords in leather for handles. This class costs $85, but the pride of forging your own sword right out of the Bronze Age is priceless. Multiple types of swords are available.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15.

Summer Pick-Up Quidditch

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Sunday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Thomas Beach–Bde Maka Ska

Enjoy a summer morning outdoors playing the greatest sport in the wizarding world: quidditch! This event is hosted by the Twin Cities Quidditch Club, and is a great opportunity to get some exercise, make some great Harry Potter-loving friends, and catch that golden snitch!

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 8th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
