Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 9th to Sunday, July 15th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, July 9th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Paul Verhoeven in Exile: Showgirls

What: Movies
When: Monday, July 9th and Tuesday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m., and 9:15 p.m.
Where: The Trylon

Paul Verhoeven spent much of the ’80s and ’90s in the United States, putting together a slew of geek favorites that were frequently ultra violent, satirical, over sexed, and highly imaginative. The Trylon will be celebrating these works in July, and this week they will be screening a 35-millimeter print of Showgirls, a tale of ambition, dance, sex, greed, and chaos. Enjoy bizarre turns from ’90s television stars like Elizabeth Berkley and Kyle MacLachlan. Tickets are $8.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies Character Appearances

What: Movies, Sports & Fitness, Family
When: Tuesday, July 10th at 10:00 a.m. and 5:35 p.m.
Where: Mall of America and CHS Field

There will be two chances to see Teen Titans Go! characters live in the Twin Cities on Tuesday July 10th! The first chance will be at Toddler Tuesday at the Mall of America, where there will be fun activities and giveaways, and attendees are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite DC heroes for a chance at a DC prize pack. The second appearance of the day will be at CHS Field during a Saint Paul Saints game. Teen Titans Go! characters will be at the HealthPartners PowerUp Play Zone, and guests will have a chance to win prizes including tickets to the upcoming film. Ticket prices to the Saints game vary.

Bad Weather July Tweet Up

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, July 10th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing Company

The MN Publishing Tweet Up returns for their July event! Come on down to Bad Weather brewing to share space and network with other writers, readers, and publishing folks. You’ll find friendly and like-minded book geeks, and might learn some really interesting stuff about the publishing world.

Tea and Meeples: Movie Night

What: Food & Drink, Community, Movies
When: Tuesday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week, the group will get together for a night of movies and enjoy a dinner of egg and tomato open-faced sandwiches.

Books & Bars: They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m., and Wednesday July 11th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books – Tuesday, Amsterdam Bar & Hall – Wednesday

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib, a poignant series of essays focused on the modern experiences of young Muslims in America.

YogaQuest Continues: Batman 1966

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, July 10th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is the 1966 film Batman, so hop into your bat-mobile (or copter, or boat) and head on down for a night of bat-yoga. This event costs $15.

Brews for Brains

What: Community, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, July 11th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Support Alzheimer’s research while enjoying a pint of great local beer at Clockwerks. This fundraising night will support the Alzheimer’s Association and its critical research through RivalZ. Clockwerks will donate $1 from every pint, and host raffles for beer goodness at 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 p.m.

TC Trek Trivia: Drinking Buddies

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, July 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, July 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, July 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing—hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough—represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, July 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

History Revealed: A Toast to History

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, July 12th at 7:45 p.m.
Where: Waldmann Brewery and Wurstery

Raise a glass to local history at Waldmann Brewery and Wurstery, a local purveyor of beer and wurst with a historic flair. This monthly series focuses on specific areas of local history, allowing participants to learn while savoring a pint of beer made in a 19th century style. This month’s program will tell the story of Frederick McGhee, Minnesota’s greatest civil-rights leader, focusing on the impacts of his tragically short life. This is a free event, and registration is handled on a first come, first served basis on their website.

Movies in the Parks: Wonder Woman

What: Movies, Community, Family
When: Thursday, July 12th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Live on the Drive

Enjoy an evening of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Wonder Woman, an inspiring film from the DC Cinematic Universe about Wonder Woman coming into contact with the outside world, and deciding for herself what will inspire her to answer the call to heroism. Goth Prom XV – CYBERIA

What: Music, Nightlife
When: Thursday, July 12th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant

Dance the night away to fight against the cyberpunk dystopia we find ourselves slowly coming to inhabit. Music from a variety of performers, including Symone Smashit, Gothess, and a number of DJs will help reawaken your soul with dance. This event is 18+ and costs $20.

Bell Museum Opening Night Party

What: Science & Technology, Educational, Nightlife, Music
When: Friday, July 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bell Museum

The Bell Museum returns! Celebrate the return of a great local natural-history museum and educational resource with a night of after-hours fun including art, music, and sneak peaks of the planetarium. This after-hours celebration features the music of Ashley Dubose, and will cost $40. There will also be a massive woolly mammoth on display, if you haven’t already been convinced to attend.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, July 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for the Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming

What: Gaming
When: Friday, July 13th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Tabletop-gaming geeks in the northwest reaches of the Twin Cities metro have a monthly home at Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming. This event is held at the Buffalo Community Center, and will play host to great tabletop-role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and others. Come check it out if you’re curious about RPGs or are looking to make new gaming buddies.

Cirque De Lune: Grimm Tales

What: Comedy & Theater, Family
When: Friday, July 13th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, July 14th at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 15th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minnsky Theater

This night of theater follows the tale of Hansel and Gretel into the magical world of Grimm with performances inspired by the Grimm brothers’ fairy tales. This event is rated PG, and is generally family friendly, though parents are asked to use their discretion based on the darkness that rears its head in classic fairy tales. Tickets range from $8-$20.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, July 13th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Saint Paul Movies in the Park: Coco

What: Movies, Family
When: Friday, July 13th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: North Dale Recreation Center

Enjoy an evening of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Coco, Pixar’s Oscar-winning film about family, tradition, life, and death. Check here for a complete schedule of screenings this week.

Princess Mononoke

What: Movies
When: Friday, July 13th and Saturday, July 14th at 11:30 p.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

The Riverview Theater, a neighborhood theater known for affordable second-run cinema, will be continuing its summer late-night programming series with Princess Mononoke, the emotionally resonant and beautiful meditation on environmentalism, development, demon-arms, and boar-gods from Studio Ghibli. All tickets are $3, and the theater only takes cash.

Intro to Improv

What: Educational, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, July 14th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: 4026 28th Ave. S., Minneapolis

Say “yes, and…” to the world of improv with this free educational workshop held at Roosevelt Library in Minneapolis. This is a great opportunity to learn performance skills, and how to generally think on your feet, adapt, and handle crisis. No experience necessary, but enthusiastic participation is strongly desired. This is event is funded by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Mixed-Level Belly Dance with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, July 15th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills. This class is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 15th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
