Welcome back to Minnesota Dark Scene, your guide to goth events and gatherings, for the month of September 2018. It’s the end of the summer of #midwestindustrial and the beginnings of fall and all things spooky. Events are subject to change, so please follow the event and venue pages to have the latest and greatest information. If we missed something, be sure to let us know!

Special Events

Dead Media Anniversary Sale

What: Sale
When: Saturday, September 1st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Dead Media (Minneapolis)

Dead Media is celebrating its first anniversary at the record store’s Corcoran neighborhood location. Everything in store is 20% off, and there is also a basement sale that includes $1 records and books, 25-cent cassettes, cassette grab bags, and a variety of other deals. Along with the sale will be live music by Brendan Wells Plant Music.

The Hands of Orlac

What: Movie
When: Saturday, September 1st at dusk (about 8:00 p.m.)
Where: Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery (Minneapolis)

Time to get your spook on! Friends of the Cemetery and the Trylon Cinema join forces to present the classic black-and-white horror film The Hands of Orlac (1924) with live accompaniment by Dreamland Faces with the Poor Nobodies. This is a fundraiser for the historic Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery. There are no advance sales; tickets are $10 cash at the gate. The film begins at dusk, and you are encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. Of course, respect for the venue and the dead is paramount.

Hard Dance Minnesota Presents: Got What You Need

Hard Dance Minnesota is back and bringing in a number of EDM DJs from around the country to create an insane night of uptempo beats. Lineup includes Rob Gee from New Jersey; Rize from Austin, Texas; Dummy from Seattle, Washington; and locals Julian Rivera, Rodd Sim, DJ Toouy, Bruce Nation, and Longhammer. Admission is $20 and 18+.

Dark Energy Presents: Martial Canterel with Wingtips

When: Saturday, September 1st at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

Dark Energy brings in another great headliner in the form of Martial Canterel from New York City, a solo project by Sean McBride, who is one-half of previous Dark Energy guests Xeno and Oaklander. Martial Canterel, which has a new album out from Dias Records called Lost at Sea, blends first wave, new wave, and industrial with a series of synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines. Also appearing is Wingtips out of Chicago, bringing in some solid goth rock with ’80s flair; support bands the Worm and Wetlegs; and resident DJs PRSPHNE and Grant Mayland. Admission is only $5 and 21+.

Communion Closing Party 2018

When: Sunday, September 2nd at 2:00 p.m
Where: The Pourhouse (Minneapolis)

The weekly Sunday Communion is coming to a close for the year, which is truly a sign of the end of summer. It is going out in fashion, however, with over 20 musicians on several stages for 12 hours with visual effects. It is a farewell to summer not to be missed. Admission is $20 and 21+.

Cyanotic, Kanga, Amelia Arsenic, and for all the emptiness

When: Tuesday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Red Sea Restaurant and Bar (Minneapolis)

Absynthetic Productions and Kilted Farmer Koncerts join forces to bring in a substantial lineup to the Red Sea stage. Cyanotic, kings of “angry robot noises,” are on tour with pop-industrial KANGA, electropunk rivet jammers Amelia Arsenic, and dark electro project for all the emptiness. Each of these bands alone would be a draw, but the four of them together make for a powerhouse of an evening. DJ Fenris handles the between-set beats. Admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and 21+.

Wax Poets

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, September 6th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Curated by the ACME collective, Wax Poets brings together a group of DJs to spin vinyl along with an art exhibition and live art. This event features DJs Centrific, Christian James, Nola, Erlaab, and Jake Pawlik and art by Hannah Jillane Sicora, Jamie Owens, and more. Admission is $8 and 21+.

Hard Mondays

What: Club Night
When: Monday, September 10th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Rouge at the Lounge (Minneapolis)

Hard Mondays take you down the dark tunnel with a night of goth, darkwave, postpunk, ethereal, death rock, and melancholy synthpop. Hard Mondays have always brought some of the best dance music, and this night will be no exception. This month’s guest DJ is Apollolypstic. Admission is 21+ with a $3 cover.

Novo Presents: John Bender, Timeghost, CGW, and Firenhouse

What: Concert
When: Tuesday, September 11th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Novo Industrial, the curator of the recent industrial festival, is bringing some great electronic music our way. John Bender is considered the godfather of US minimal-wave electronics out of Cincinnati. Along with him is Timeghost from New York, which offers up a modular synth noise style. Other acts include CGW (Collin Gorman Weiland), Firenhouse, and DJ Angelica Ottavia. Admission is $15 and 21+.

When: Thursday, September 13th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Honey (Minneapolis)

The monthly all-femme DJ night continues this month at Honey, bringing the best of the dark vibes. A portion of the cover charge will go to benefit RAICES, which works to serve immigrants and refugees with legal resources. DJs for the evening include Miss Q, Hyperkarma, Mercury, and visuals are by VJ Wednesday. Admission is $5 and 21+.

The Forbidden Bazaar Presents: Pirate Booty

What: Club Night
When: Friday, September 14th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Gay 90’s (Minneapolis)

The Forbidden Bazaar’s monthly adventures continue, this time with a hearty pirate theme. Come dressed in your pirate best and ready to witness amazing entertainment like fire performances, aerial arts, pole dancing, belly dancing, burlesque, and BDSM. There will also be music to set you dancing, visual projections to immerse you in the scene, and a photo booth to create a memory. Admission is $10 for 21+ and $15 for 18+.

Tourniquet Noise Series

What: Club Night
When: Monday, September 17th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

Tourniquet Noise Series is bringing a monthly night of noise to the Twin Cities. This month’s installment includes music from Skin Lies, Anatomy of Ruminants, Forms in Nature, and Toe Tag. DJ Angelica Ottavia spins between sets. Admission is free and 21+.

Giorgio Moroder DJ Set with Jake Rudh, Grant Mayland, and Dirty McKenzie

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, September 20th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue (Minneapolis)

Giorgio Moroder may or may not be a name you’ve heard before, but it’s almost certain you’ve heard his hand in the music you listen to. A founder of disco and electronic music, he prospered as an Italian producer, songwriter, performer, and DJ. After 50 years in the industry he still keeps spinning and was a guest collaborator on the 2013 Grammy Award–winning Daft Punk album Random Access Memories. He has remixed Donna Summer, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, and Eurythmics. Appearing along with this musical juggernaut is Dirty McKenzie, who has traveled the globe spinning techno under various names but has now settled locally. DJs Jake Rudh and Grant Mayland keep things spinning between sets. Admission is $30 in advance, $35 at the door, and 18+.

Dark Energy and Deeper Present: Kontravoid, HIDE, and more

When: Saturday, September 22nd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

Dark Energy and Deeper team up to bring in Kontravoid from Toronto. This solo act of Cam Findlay (Crystal Castles) offers an aggressive EBM vibe that is sure to keep you dancing. Along with Kontravoid is HIDE from Chicago, which is a sample-based postindustrial group with lots of sub-bass and trance drones. Also on hand will be DJs Angelica Ottavia and Grant Mayland and live support from 16 MK and CGW. Admission is $5 and 21+.

Weekly Events

Transmission with DJ Jake Rudh

What: Club Night
When: Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown VFW (Minneapolis)

For 17 years, DJ Jake Rudh has been bringing the best of ’80s new wave and synthpop to the clubs every Wednesday (and more recently to the airwaves on the Current every Thursday). Transmission is an amazing night of music, videos, dancing, and ’80s nostalgia for all fans, and there are people who have met and gotten married thanks to this unparalleled night of music. Come out and see what it’s all about, you won’t regret it. This event is 21+ and free!

She’s in Control

When: Thursday Mornings from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ Mercury brings you the musical and pop-culture history of the goth and alternative scene in her two-hour show on KFAI. Blending interviews, history, and music to tie it all together makes her show one to catch.

Across the Board with DJ SLT

What: Radio Show
When: Friday Mornings from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ SLT has been bringing his wide-ranging musical interests to KFAI for over 10 years. His show features anything and everything from ’70s glam rock to EBM, industrial, pop, and all the David Bowie you never knew existed. DJ SLT frequently has theme nights, guest hosts, collaborations, and collectors’ corners to make a varied and greatly interesting radio show worth staying awake for. He also plays his own original works under the name Kradis.

Bondage A-Go-Go

What: Club Night
When: Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero has been the goth community’s mainstay for nearly 24 years. Today it is the best place to grab a drink and dance to the best music the goth world has to offer (and some it hasn’t). With three rotating DJs keeping the music fresh and interesting, it sets the scene for what’s going on in the back—where the in-house dominatrixes keep your blood pumping with safe and consensual scenes you can either watch or participate in (after signing up, staying sober until your time, and tipping the mistress). No photos, 21+, $7.00 cover, cash-only bar. Come casual or dress to impress.
