#1 Comic Issues I’m Picking Up the Week of October 31, 2018

This Halloween week in new comics, we have an embarrassment of witches. (Not to be confused with a A Discovery of Witches, which is not yet a comic book.)

Comics for the week of October 31, 2018

I remember those summers when multiple blockbusters were competing for the best take on the same premise—say, an asteroid hurtling toward Earth or sudden volcano in the middle of Los Angeles. This year, comics publishers have apparently decided collectively or coincidentally that the season of the witch is upon us. And they’re not the only ones: in TV land, the recent release of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the CW’s reboot of Charmed say to me that something in the zeitgeist resonates in the stories of young women finding power in each other and their heritage.

Long used as a means to ostracize women who didn’t conform to patriarchy (they still teach The Crucible in schools, right?), the witch being more recently reclaimed as a term of empowerment seems relevant as #MeToo brings forth a greater understanding of women’s needs to stand up and of the importance of solidarity. It seems important to note that the comics out this week highlight the coven as both a unit of female belonging and a source of power. In Exorsisters and Wytches, there are sisterhood and a matrilineal components to connect characters to a history of survival through adversity, and betterment of the world. In Hex Wives and Sex Death Revolution, the power of women working together is explored through its sudden absence.

Note: The Charmed: Magic School manga was also set to be included in this week’s list, but it has been delayed—along with Katy Rex’s signing at Hot Comics and Collectibles.
