Minnesota Goth Events and Gatherings for November 2018

Well, my dark friends, our gloriously spooky month is now behind us. However, there are a ton of great events this month of turkey and terrifying family gatherings. If we missed anything, be sure to let us know in the comments!

Special Events

Wax Poets

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, November 1st at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

The ACME collective brings us another great night of music and art with DJ sets by Jeff Swiff, Apollolypstic, Mr. Blaq, and Jake Pawlik. There will also be art exhibitions and live art by Hannah Jillane Sicora, Jamie Owns, Leore Wohl and more. This is a 21+ event and has an $8 cover.

Stabbing Westward Darkest Days Anniversary Tour

What: Concert
When: Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: St. Croix Casino (Turtle Lake, WI)

Despite its almost 15-year-long break, Stabbing Westward has been back in business since 2016, which has its career spanning over 30 years. The band is currently on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album Darkest Days, which was released in 1997, and will be playing the entire album. They are joined by Mad Alice, an Alice in Chains and Mad Season tribute band. This is a 21+ show, and tickets are $18 in advance and $22 at the door.

Kinky Friday: S&M 3-Year Anniversary!

What: Club Night
When: Friday, November 2nd at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Gay 90’s (Minneapolis)

Mistress Mara and Queen Pea are celebrating their third year running Kinky Friday. They will be offering up the usual as well as a photo booth, old-school arcade games, a second bar, couch or cage dances, and an amazing stage show. The AC Hotel by Marriott across the street is offering a $99 room rate if you wish to make a night of it, and Venus Unveiled is offering up a 10% discount if you mention Kinky Friday and sign up for VU emails. As always respect is sexy, and consent is mandatory. This is an 18+ event; admission is $15 for 18+ and $10 for 21+.

Dark Energy November: Benefit for Victims of Sexual Violence

What: Club Night
When: Saturday November 3rd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

Dark Energy pulls no punches this month, taking a stand against sexual violence in solidarity with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Anita Hill, and all victims of sexual violence. All proceeds will be split between RAINN and the Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis. DJs for the evening are DJ Miss Q (Gothess), Bleak Roses (Feels Worldwide), and resident DJs PRSPHNE and Grant Mayland. This is a 21+ event and $5; as always, but especially for this event, consent is respectful and mandatory.

Ego Likeness, Abbey Death, and Panic Priest

What: Concert
When: Sunday, November 4th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Red Sea Restaurant and Bar (Minneapolis)

Absynthetic Productions brings in Baltimore-based dark electronic band Ego Likeness to play and get us all dancing to their beats. Their last album was released in 2010, but they have featured on a number of compilations and created remixes for a number of bands. Abbey Death offers up a goth industrial sound that is fresh and exciting and worth checking out. Filling out the roster is Panic Priest, a goth synth band with lyrics evoking death, sex, and doomed romance. Their debut self-titled album is out now via Negative Gain Productions. This is a 21+ event with $20 tickets in advance and $25 at the door.

Forbidden Bazaar Presents: The Boba Fettish Ball

What: Club Night
When: Friday, November 9th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Gay 90’s (Minneapolis)

The Forbidden Bazaar is back this month with its first full Star Wars–themed event! Dress up as your favorite character; watch or (with consent) participate in the BDSM; and see aerial arts, fire magic, burlesque, suspension, and the photobooth by KreTat Productions. DJs Noise, DV8, Spier, and Lorth will keep the dance floor moving through the night. This is an 18+ event with tickets at $15 for 18+ and $10 for 21+.

Happyslap, Zwaremachine, Silkhearse, and ENDIF

What: Concert
When: Friday, November 9th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Nomad World Pub (Minneapolis)

Eyemyth and Midwest Industrial bring in Happyslap from Washington, DC, with its “twisted East Coast noisepop” along with Silkhearse, a shiny new stripped-back industrial act to check out, and local favorites Zwaremachine and ENDIF to round out the night. This is a 21+ event, and tickets are $5 to $10.

A Perfect Circle

What: Concert
When: Saturday, November 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Armory (Minneapolis)

Tool side project turned top act A Perfect Circle hits the the Armory this month with its brand of metal and rock touring in support of the band’s new album, Eat the Elephant. As if that weren’t enough, there are also opening acts Badflower and Night Club. This event offers a premium experience option with suites and table reservations and packages for an additional fee. Tickets are $60 to $80 and all ages.

Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records

What: Film
When: Thursday, November 15th (sold out) and Sunday, November 18th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema (Minneapolis)

Sound Unseen, Extreme Noise Records, Cine-O-Matic, and KFAI Radio present a film that showcases the history of Wax Trax! and how the creators became the go-to for underground industrial acts and brought the genre into the mainstream. Directed by Julia Nash in the US, Belgium, Canada, and Germany, the 95-minute film  features interviews with industrial heavies like Trent Reznor, Al Jourgensen, and Ian MacKaye and explores the label’s acts like Front 242, COIL, PIG, KMFDM, Underworld, and more. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door, but buy early as the second screening is sure to sell out.

Kajunga Records Presents: Erika and Niki Kritz

What: Concert
When: Thursday, November 15th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

Local record label Kajunga brings in Erika from Detroit with her transdimensional electro-experimental sound full of ethereal noises and ambiance. Joining her is local Niki Kitz, whose heavy electronic sound and synths are at perfectly at home here in the Twin Cities. This is a 21+ event with a $10 cover.

Tourniquet November

What: Club Night
When: Monday, November 19th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

This month’s Tourniquet brings in some great noise acts. Dolores Dewberry, Juhyo, Dead Actress, and Controlled Opposition will set the scene for you with some well-crafted sounds to delight. House DJ this month is Angelica Ottavia. This is a 21+ event and free!

Transmission Presents: Thanksgiving Eve

What: Club Night
When: Wednesday, November 21st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Varsity Theater (Minneapolis)

Transmission returns to the Varsity Theater (under new ownership and management) just in time for its annual Thanksgiving Eve dance night. DJ Jake Rudh will keep you deep in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s and even include some modern hits. This is a 21+ event, and tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door (plus Ticketmaster fees). This tends to sell out, so get your tickets soon!

Street Sects, Champagne Mirrors, Burning, and Nones Proj

What: Club Night
When: Friday, November 23rd at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Fraternal Order of Eagles 34 (Minneapolis)

Novo Industrial and Phage Tapes bring in Street Sects from Austin, Texas. The band is on tour to promote their new album, The Kicking Mule, which combines harsh electronics, synths, and noise with compelling lyrics. Along with them are Champagne Mirrors from Chicago and locals Burning and Nones Proj. This is a 21+ show and $10 at the door.

Intellephunk Presents: Adam X

What: Concert
When: Saturday, November 24th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Rouge at The Lounge (Minneapolis)

Local outfit Intellephunk brings in some amazing techno by way of Berlin, Germany, and Brooklyn, New York, in the form of Adam X. Supporting a new album out November 1, Recon Mission, Adam X is coming here to provide an amazing performance after playing at Das Bunker in Los Angeles. Starting off the night is DJ Angelica Ottavia. This is a 21+ event and is $20 at the door.

Gothess Presents: Ghoulfriends

What: Club Night
When: Friday, November 30th at 9:30 p.m.
What: Moon Palace Books (Minneapolis)

Gothess is working this month to better collaborate and encourage the goth community by collaborating with A Conspiracy of Strange Girls and others. As always, all queer, trans, and POCI goths and allies are welcome to experience what Gothess has to offer. The music will be provided by DJ Miss Q, PRSPHRNE, Healthgoth Mom, and Katie Lee. Visuals by VJ Wednesday. This is a 21+ event with a $5 cover.

Weekly Events

Transmission with DJ Jake Rudh

What: Club Night
When: Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown VFW (Minneapolis)

For 17 years, DJ Jake Rudh has been bringing the best of ’80s new wave and synthpop to the clubs every Wednesday (and more recently to the airwaves on the Current every Thursday). Transmission is an amazing night of music, videos, dancing, and ’80s nostalgia for all fans, and there are people who have met and gotten married thanks to this unparalleled night of music. Come out and see what it’s all about, you won’t regret it. This event is 21+ and free!

She’s in Control

What: Radio Show
When: Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. (Deathrock Power Hour with Jordan Jeske on October 11th)
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ Mercury brings you the musical and pop-culture history of the goth and alternative scene in her two-hour show on KFAI. Blending interviews, history, and music to tie it all together makes her show one to catch.

Across the Board with DJ SLT

What: Radio Show
When: Fridays from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ SLT has been bringing his wide-ranging musical interests to KFAI for over 10 years. His show features anything and everything from ’70s glam rock to EBM, industrial, pop, and all the David Bowie you never knew existed. DJ SLT frequently has theme nights, guest hosts, collaborations, and collectors’ corners to make a varied and greatly interesting radio show worth staying awake for. He also plays his own original works under the name Kradis.

Bondage A-Go-Go

What: Club Night
When: Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero has been the goth community’s mainstay for nearly 24 years. Today it is the best place to grab a drink and dance to the best music the goth world has to offer (and some it hasn’t). With three rotating DJs keeping the music fresh and interesting, it sets the scene for what’s going on in the back—where the in-house dominatrixes keep your blood pumping with safe and consensual scenes you can either watch or participate in (after signing up, staying sober until your time, and tipping the mistress). No photos, 21+, $7.00 cover, cash-only bar. Come casual or dress to impress.
