Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, November 19th to Sunday, November 25th.

Star Party with Mike Lynch

What: Science & Technology, Education, Family
When: Monday, November 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Metropolitan State University Science Education Center

We stand at the edge of an endless cosmic ocean, and Star Parties are an opportunity to gaze into infinity with fun activities like a planetarium program, fun activities, and a chance to look into a telescope. This Star Party is a free event, and will have special guest Mike Lynch, a meteorologist at WCCO Radio, and will include the opportunity to check out the University Biodome.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Creative Night

When: Monday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, November 20th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (Saint Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Tuesday, November 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique—presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History—is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s topic is “All in the Jeans,” and will be led by Jim Bradeen, Deepak Harith, and Atena Haghighattalab from the plant-pathology department, or CFANS, with a focus on how plant biology research can positively impact worldwide crop security. Tickets are $5–$12, online or at the door.

YogaQuest Continues: TBD

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, November 20th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is to be determined, so be ready for anything! Check back on the website for more information. This event costs $15.

When: Wednesday, November 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Steamship Coffee and Tea

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and other times. See the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Black Friday: Egypt’s Sunken Cities

What: Arts, Community
When: Friday, November 23rd at 6:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

This is your chance to see Egypt’s Sunken Cities free of charge (though tickets are first come, first served), and get 20% off unique and artistic gifts you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the metro area. Avoid the doorbuster rush, and replace the pressing lines at retail stores with a post-turkey-hangover morning of art, and marvel at a world that was once swallowed by the sea, all on a chilly Minnesota morning.

Source Black Friday Sale

What: Gaming, Arts, Community
When: Friday, November 23rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Enjoy a day of geeky community and deals at the Source, as they clear out their inventory with an annual Black Friday sale. Anyone who brings in a non-perishable item for the food shelf will enjoy a 15% discount on the geeky treasures that the Source can provide, while Adventure Club members will gain an additional 10% (for a total of 25%). So, be there for the drawings, the free soda and snacks, and the blowout specials. Per the Source, there’s “Something for Everyone, and Everyone is Welcome.”

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, November 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South Saint Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

Katy Rex Charmed Signing

What: Arts
When: Saturday, November 24th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Hot Comics and Collectibles

Come celebrate the release of a new Charmed graphic-novel adaptation by local writer Katy Rex (who also wrote Jade Street Protection Services and 2000AD Sci-Fi Summer Special). This new graphic novel sees the Halliwell sisters of the smash hit supernatural-TV series return in manga format for a new adventure full of magic.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Parkway Saturday Matinee

What: Movies, Family
When: Saturday, November 24th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway

Enjoy a matinee screening of Steven Spielberg’s classic tale of a friendship between a young child and a stranded alien. This is a classic from the 1980s featuring free-range children, dangerous government intervention, and the power of love. Presale tickets are $7, or $5 for those under the age of 12, and includes a lunch discount at El Burrito Mercado.

Wright County Geeks Sci-Fi Saturday

What: Gaming, Movies
When: Saturday, November 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Northwest metro sci-fi and fantasy geeks: Come on down to the Buffalo Community Center for a casual meetup. The event typically starts off with an informal discussion of games, films, books, TV, and graphic novels before voting on what to watch. This is a very low-key event and is steered by the interests of attendees. Per the group’s website, the loose topic for November is “Nature,” so put on your sci-fi ecology hat (think Dune, etc)!

Jurassic Park in Concert

What: Movies, Music
When: Saturday, November 24th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 25th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Orchestra Hall

Dinosaurs! Irresponsible science! Spectacle! Chaos theory! Mismanagement! A soundtrack that cannot be beat! See all this and more at Jurassic Park in Concert, a cinema and music experience brought to you by the Minnesota Orchestra. Watch Spielberg’s dinosaur classic (which really does hold up to re-watching as an adult), accompanied by world-class musicians. Tickets start at $50.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, November 24th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, November 25th at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Flashback Brunch: The Dark Crystal

When: Sunday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Woodbury

Enjoy your decadent vulture-monster court, weird puppets, and a completely alien world along with eggs and mimosas at this Flashback Brunch. This is your opportunity to see the more-frightening, more-alien, and less-family friendly side of Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s puppet-based-fantasy films of the ’80s. Tickets are $7.58.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, November 25th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Community, Arts, Gaming
When: Sunday, November 25th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Pillsbury House Theatre (Minneapolis)

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week, Gender Jam will be all about experiencing new worlds with virtual reality! As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, November 25th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (Saint Louis Park)

This weekly event gives families a chance to experience virtual reality, soda, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great Saint Louis Park location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, which covers one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.

Erotic Fan Fiction: The Game Show

What: Comedy & Theater
When: Sunday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fearless Presents (824 18th Ave NE, Minneapolis)

Fearless Presents is a monthly showcase from Fearless Comedy Productions focusing on a different comedy act every month. This month, the focus will be Erotic Fan Fiction. Watch a combo of smut, improv, and potentially sexy trivia. This event will be hosted by Heather Rand-McKay, and tickets are $12.
