Frankenstein at 200!: The Monsters of Beowulf

What: Books, Educational
When: Monday, November 5th at 2:30 p.m.
Where: University of Minnesota, Lind Hall, room 207A

Honor the woman who created one of our greatest modern monsters and the first science-fiction novel with an afternoon of monsters from the literary past. What do the monsters of Beowulf
mean to English literature? What meaning can we find in Grendel? Come hear some selections from Beowulf be read and find out.

Creative Night

When: Monday, November 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, November 6th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students a 50-percent discount to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

YogaQuest Continues: TBD

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, November 6th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is to be determined (check back on the website for more information), so be ready for anything! This event costs $15.

Books & Bars: The Handmaid’s Tale

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, November 7th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Monster Brewing

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian-science-fiction novel following a young woman living in sexual servitude in a theocratic police state within what was once the United States. The recent Hulu adaptation and current political climate have made Margaret Atwood’s novel as relevant as ever.

Dungeons & Dragons Thursdays

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, November 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Come to GlitchHQ on the second Thursday of every month for an open game of Dungeons & Dragons (the RPG that started it all, from Wisconsin’s Gary Gygax and Minnesota’s Dave Arneson) or Mouse Guard (imagine Redwall as an RPG), welcoming new and experienced players alike. The game is played in an open or sandbox style, so don’t worry about missing individual sessions for overarching story—just show up, roll up, survive, and level up! Materials and rules provided.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing, hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and Modist Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Wizarding World Trivia Night

What: Trivia, Books
When: Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bruininks Hall 220 (University of Minnesota)

Put your Harry Potter knowledge to the test in this trivia fundraiser event put on by Colleges Against Cancer. Your $20 registration covers a team of three or four people, along with light snacks. Trivia will cover books, along with recent movies like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. There’s a variety of prizes to claim, as well as pride for putting your wizarding knowledge to use in support of a good cause.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

History Revealed: A Toast to History at Waldmann

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, November 8th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery

Raise a glass to local history at Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery, a local purveyor of beer and wurst with a historic flair. This monthly series focuses on specific areas of local history, allowing participants to learn while savoring a pint of beer made in a 19th-century style. This month’s program is “Minnesota’s Columbus Memorial: Immigration, Colonialism, and Memory on the State Capital Grounds.” This is a free event, and registration is handled on a first come, first served basis on their website.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, November 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming

What: Gaming
When: Friday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Community Center

Tabletop-gaming geeks in the northwest reaches of the Twin Cities metro have a monthly home at Wright County Geeks Tabletop Gaming. This event is held at the Buffalo Community Center, and will play host to great tabletop-role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and others. Come check it out if you’re curious about RPGs or are looking to make new gaming buddies.

Read the Book/See the Movie

What: Movies, Books
When: Friday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: TBD (see posting for more information)

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, November 9th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

When: Saturday, November 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: CONsole Room

Gather up with your fellow Whovians to discover several TARDIS’ in and around the Twin Cities-metro area. Check out the great work done by fellow fans of Doctor Who, and marvel at these creations. There will be a map and schedule of activities posted shortly before the event, so make sure to check back.

International Games Week Celebration

What: Gaming, Family
When: Saturday, November 10th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

Celebrate International Games Week, an event that brings all kinds of tabletop goodness to libraries, at the Minneapolis Central Library. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into tabletop gaming, this is a great place to start and meet fellow gamers in your city. All ages are welcome, but young children need to be accompanied by an adult.

Alien and Aliens Double Feature

What: Movies
When: Saturday, November 10th at 2:15 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Woodbury

The Alamo Drafthouse will be screening the sci-fi classics Alien and Aliens as a double feature. Come see the tale of Ellen Ripley, one of the most influential science-fiction characters of the 20th century, whose performance of earned Sigourney Weaver an Oscar nomination for Aliens (very rare for science-fiction and horror films). If you haven’t seen Alien or Aliens, be prepared to have some pop-cultural reference blind spots revealed. These films depict a plausibly capitalist future, a truly inhuman and terrifying creature designed by H.R. Giger, and have a lot to say about authority, pragmatism, and human responses to crisis. Tickets are $12.99.

Saturday Night Space Opera: Flash Gordon

When: Saturday, November 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Tower Games

Local sci-fi RPG night Saturday Night Space Opera returns with a night of retro space adventure with the Savage Worlds Flash Gordon rules, so get ready to take on Ming The Merciless! This is a free event, all rules will be taught, and no materials are required—just RSVP on the website to snag your spot.

Geek Slink & Drink’s Glamilton Remix

What: Music, Nightlife, Arts
When: Saturday, November 10th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater

Don’t throw away your shot to see Geek Slink & Drink’s Glamilton, a cabaret night celebrating the love of musicals. There will be singing, belly dancing, cirque, and more! This event will star Red Rider, Sadie Sapphire, Emily Villano, Anna Christy, Marielle, Candelora, Shannon Townsend, and Geek Slink! Tickets are $15, or $12 in advance.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

When: Sunday, November 11th at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: starting November 11th, there will be two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels, and is forgiving for beginners, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, November 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Community, Arts, Movies
When: Sunday, November 11th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Pillsbury House Theatre, 3501 Chicago Ave (Minneapolis)

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week, Gender Jam will be meeting at a soon-to-be-disclosed bowling alley for Total Trans Takeover: Bowling Edition, an intergenerational event! As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Akihabara II: Anime Swap Meet and Yard Sale

When: Sunday, November 11th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Anime Twin Cities is bringing back Akihabara, an annual free and public swap meet with a focus on trading or selling anime-related items. Items to be sold must be official merchandise, though unofficial items may be traded. Adult material is not permitted. Enjoy special door-prize drawings ever hour, and concessions to support Anime Twin Cities. Any veterans in attendance will receive a free gift, because this year’s event takes place on Veteran’s Day.

Literature Lovers’ Afternoon Out™

What: Books, Community
When: Sunday, November 11th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Community Thread (Stillwater)

Literature Lovers’ Afternoon Out™, hosted by Pamela Klinger-Horn (a Twin Cities literary connoisseur), will bring readers together with local and national authors for an afternoon of discussion, light refreshments, and prizes. This will be an intimate event with a seating limit of 100, so call ahead and stop in the store to pick up your $11 ticket. Guests include Christina Dalcher, Alyson Hagy, Kristina McMorris, and Leif Enger.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, November 11th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives families a chance to enjoy virtual reality, sodas, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, and allows one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.

Kitty Pryde: Queer Womxn Takeover

What: Community, Gaming
When: Sunday, November 11th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Up-Down Minneapolis

Come on down for Kitty Pryde: Queer Womxn Takeover, a rad night of arcade games, dancing, and drink specials hosted by DJ AriAtari and presented by Indeed Brewing and Up-Down! All Indeed beers will be $1 off, including classics like Day Tripper, and specialties like Mexican Honey. This is a great way to get your game on in an intentionally inclusive space.
