Welcome back to Minnesota Dark Scene, your guide to goth events and gatherings, for the month of December 2018. The long night will soon be upon us all, and that offers us up a number of dark gatherings as we move deeper into the winter season. It may be cold, but things are just heating up for Twin Cities goths!

Special Events

Dark Energy December: Anything Goes

What: Club Night
When: Saturday, December 1st at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub (Minneapolis)

Dark Energy returns for the month with a fun evening of a little bit of everything! Dance all night to ’80s and ’90s industrial, goth rock, new beat, the many -waves, post-punk, and everything in between. The DJs are even taking song requests, so you can dance to your favorites. DJ and visuals by Grant Mayland. Cover is $5 and 21+.

VNV Nation, Holygram, and the Rain Within

What: Concert
When: Sunday, December 2nd at 6:45 p.m.
Where: Skyway Theatre (Minneapolis)

VNV Nation visits the Twin Cities again, this time in support of the project’s new album, Noire. Ronan Harris has always put on a good and lively show, and this one is sure to be no exception. Along for the ride is new-wave/post-punk band Holygram and synthwave phenoms the Rain Within. Tickets are $25 to $28 and all ages.

Greycoats Setting Fire to the Great Unknown 10-Year Anniversary

What: Concert
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7th Street Entry (Minneapolis)

Local band Greycoats are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their first album, Setting Fire to the Great Unknown. Their music is an ’80s new-wave nostalgic extravaganza, and the album is an amazing testament to the art of the genre. Joining them will be Wax Lead (releasing their new EP, Temple), and Wet Legs. Tickets are $10 and 18+.

Wax Poets

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, December 6th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

Wax Poets are back for December with their monthly night of music and art curated by the ACME collective. This month the music comes from Erlaab, Andy Fitton, Ian Lehman, and Simon Alaya and the art from Hannah Jillane Sicora, Leore Wohl, Jamie Owens, and Jamez L Smith. There is an $8 cover, and the event is 21+.

Grim Arcana: Beer Release and Dark Arts Holiday Market

What: Beer Release and Shopping
When: Friday, December 7th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Able Seedhouse and Brewery (Minneapolis)

Mrakmur and Able Seedhouse and Brewery team up to bring you not only an evening of music and vendors but a new beer release: Grim Arcana, a double brown ale made with smoked Able malt that’s made in collaboration with Animales Barbeque Co. and supports Toys for Tots. There will be DJ sets by JanaDark, and vendors include Marnie’s Creations, ELC, Threadmancer Embroidery, Geek Girl Tarot, and more. The event is free and 21+, and you get a free beer with any donation for Toys for Tots.

KrampusNacht Ball

What: Club Night
When: Friday, December 7th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero is hosting a night devoted to that devilishly festive demon, Krampus. A night of dance, drinks, and festivities with two-for-ones until 11:00 p.m. Free admission if you dress up as Krampus to get into the spirit of the holidays. Admission is $5 and 21+.

Minnesota Krampus at the St. Paul European Christmas Market

What: Shopping
When: Saturday, December 8th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Union Depot (St. Paul)

Speaking of Krampus, our own local Krampus will be visiting the St. Paul European Christmas Market. Meet with the demon of the season and get some holiday shopping done if you have a mind.

Intellephunk Presents Volvox

What: Concert
When: Thursday, December 13th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

Intellephunk brings in Volvox out of Brooklyn, New York, an DJ who creates stripped-back techno and acid-like sets and has worked with a number of international musicians as well as held two residencies in New York. Centrific will be starting off the show; Intellephunk and Neil Pearson set the scene. Admission is $15 and 21+.

Scoundrelle’s Keep and KMK’s Holiday Trunk Sale

What: Shopping
When: Friday, December 14th from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Where: Scoundrelle’s Keep (St. Paul)

Two lovely outfitters are opening their doors for a trunk show and yearly sale. Both Scoundrelle’s and KMK offer up corsets, petticoats, and other wonderful designs. If you are interested in steampunk and other finery, this is a great way to increase your wardrobe for all the upcoming New Year’s events.

The Forbidden Bazaar Presents Winter is C*ming Again

What: Club Night
When: Friday, December 14th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Gay 90’s (Minneapolis)

The Forbidden Bazaar brings you a Game of Thrones–themed event. Dress to the theme and enjoy the flow-friendly dance floor. DJs for the evening include DJ Noise, Spier, and Lorth, and there will be the usual entertainments of aerial acrobatics, fire magic, burlesque, suspension, a photo booth, and more. To enter Gay 90’s, it’s $5 for 21+ and $10 for 18+, plus $5 for entry to the Forbidden Bazaar.

A Winter’s Night Market

What: Shopping
When: Saturday, December 15th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Artspace Jackson Flats (Minneapolis)

A Conspiracy of Strange Girls brings you another great market experience with the help of Artspace Jackson Flats, featuring over 30 independent designers, brands, and artists along with live music and complimentary beverages. This is an open event, though children should be accompanied by an adult.

Techno Tuesday with Niki Kitz

What: Club Night
When: Tuesday, December 18th  at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall (St. Paul)

Inspired by a layover in Amsterdam, where they found themselves at a techno night, the curators of this event came home with an idea and the perfect location. The first Techno Tuesday will feature Niki Kitz with support from Greg Bodette and DJ Encounter and lighting and visuals from Jason Hollis. Cover is $10 and 18+.

Gothess Presents Wax Trax! Night

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, December 20th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Honey (Minneapolis)

Gothess’s monthly event brings you a tribute to Wax Trax! Records in tribute to the recent documentary that chronicled the label’s long and heady history. Naturally, this means there will be music from Wax Trax! to have you dancing the night away awash in nostalgia. DJs for the night are Miss Q, Fenris, Mercury, and Hyperkarma with visuals by VJ Wednesday. Cover of $5 and 21+.

Transmission Presents ’80s Prom: A New Year’s Eve Celebration

What: Club Night
When: Monday, December 31st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue (Minneapolis)

Transmission is hosting New Year’s with music videos and sets of Top 40, R&B/funk, new wave, underground, synthpop, hip-hop, rap, and soundtracks. There will be a photographer on hand to take pictures of you and your friends in your outfits and glow. Tickets are $15 until December 21 or $20 after that (including at the door) and 18+.

Beyond the Veil: New Year’s Eve Masquerade

What: Club Night
When: Monday, December 31st at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

Dark Energy’s New Year’s is a funerary-themed masquerade with two floors of dancing, a midnight champagne toast, an all-black balloon drop, a photo booth, a raffle and more. The dress code is funeral attire—veils, masks, and anything and everything that’s both spooky and formal. Musical guests include Void Vision from Philadelphia, Andi Harriman from New York City, Disko Obscura from New Orleans, and Autumn from here in the Twin Cities (a group with amazing charisma and talent featured in October’s article “5 Dark Scene Bands to Watch”). Apollolypstic and Grant Mayland are the resident DJs, with lighting, effects, and visuals by ENDIF. Arrive before the show for dinner service, present your presale ticket, and get a free glass of champagne! Tickets are $20 in advance and 18+ and will likely sell out.

New Year’s Eve at Ground Zero

What: Club Night
When: Monday, December 31st t 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero and the Dungeon open up specially for New Year’s Eve with a night of music, dancing, and Bondage A-Go-Go. If you are looking for a less expensive night out with all the dark music you can stand, then this might be the choice for you. Cover is $7 and 21+. Note that the bar is cash only.

Weekly Events

Transmission with DJ Jake Rudh

What: Club Night
When: Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown VFW (Minneapolis)

For 17 years, DJ Jake Rudh has been bringing the best of ’80s new wave and synthpop to the clubs every Wednesday (and more recently to the airwaves on the Current every Thursday). Transmission is an amazing night of music, videos, dancing, and ’80s nostalgia for all fans, and there are people who have met and gotten married thanks to this unparalleled night of music. Come out and see what it’s all about; you won’t regret it. This event is 21+ and free!

She’s in Control

What: Radio Show
When: Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. 
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ Mercury brings you the musical and pop-culture history of the goth and alternative scene in her two-hour show on KFAI. Blending interviews, history, and music to tie it all together makes her show one to catch.

Across the Board with DJ SLT

What: Radio Show
When: Fridays from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. (True Deep Cuts: All B-Sides, December 21st)
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ SLT has been bringing his wide-ranging musical interests to KFAI for over 10 years. His show features anything and everything from ’70s glam rock to EBM, industrial, pop, and all the David Bowie you never knew existed. DJ SLT frequently has theme nights, guest hosts, collaborations, and collectors’ corners to make a varied and greatly interesting radio show worth staying awake for. He also plays his own original works under the name Kradis.

Bondage A-Go-Go

What: Club Night
When: Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero has been the goth community’s mainstay for nearly 24 years. Today it is the best place to grab a drink and dance to the best music the goth world has to offer (and some it hasn’t). With three rotating DJs keeping the music fresh and interesting, it sets the scene for what’s going on in the back—where the in-house dominatrixes keep your blood pumping with safe and consensual scenes you can either watch or participate in (after signing up, staying sober until your time, and tipping the mistress). No photos, 21+, $7 cover, cash-only bar. Come casual or dress to impress.
