Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, December 24th to Sunday, December 30th.

Luminaries on Summit Avenue

What: Arts, Community, Family
When: Monday, December 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Avenue, Saint Paul

See Summit Avenue lit up for the holiday with at least 800 candles, as the Summit Avenue Residential Preservation Association attempts to turn off the dark on this winter night. So, bring yourself to Summit Avenue and take in some winter’s cheer with the people you care about.

La Dolce Vita

What: Movies
When: Tuesday, December 25th at 3:30 and 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Trylon Cinema

Enjoy Fellini’s classic tale of excess screened at the Trylon in all its glory. This is the story of Rome by night, and focuses on a philandering paparazzo as he travels through the eternal city. Expect bizarre, hilarious, and surreal encounters in this epic. Promotional support for these screenings is provided by the Italian Cultural Center. Tickets are $8.

Disney Trivia at BlackStack

What: Trivia, Movies, Family
When: Wednesday, December 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Brave what could be a serious winter storm to prove your Disney movie knowledge at BlackStack, one of the Twin Cities’ premier breweries for fans of strange hazy IPAs and other creative concoctions. While it is being held at a brewery, this is a family-friendly affair. There will be prizes for trivia winners, costumes, and clever team names. This is your chance to put your years of knowledge to use.

Mischief’s Book Club: Ash by Melinda Lo

What: Books
When: Thursday, December 27th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Come on down for a friendly book club hosted by Mischief Toy Store (familiar to readers of this column as the hosts of Friday Night Magic). This is an 18+ book club, highlighting books that its members think merit further discussion. For December, the club will be discussing Melinda Lo’s Ash, a tale of fairy realms, cruel stepmothers, and making choices between fairy tales and true love.

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, December 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery decked out in Steampunk decor and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and other times. See the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 27th; Friday, December 28th; and Saturday, December 29th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

This year’s production of A Klingon Christmas Carol continues at the Historic Mounds Theatre in Saint Paul. Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” it will teach you the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Seating is reserved, and some performances sell out, so advance ticket purchases are recommended.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, December 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, December 28th at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South Saint Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, December 28th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.


What: Movies
When: Saturday, December 29th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

See this ’80s classic about the wish to grow up, and the importance of doing it the slow, normal way. Directed by the late, great Penny Marshall and starring a young Tom Hanks, Big starts with a chance encounter with magic, and following with the story of what happens when a child is granted their wish of adulthood. The Parkway will be screening a digital version of the 1988 film, and presale tickets are $7 for anyone 13 years or older.

A Winter Haunting: Ghost Stories at the Bookstore!

When: Saturday, December 29th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Boneshaker Books

We are in the long night of winter. Days may be getting longer, but for a time, darkness and cold hold sway over Minnesota. For hundreds of years, some cultures have held the tradition of telling ghostly tales around Christmas and other winter holidays. This event at Boneshaker Books will honor that tradition with warm company, ghastly tales, and ghost stories from the community. Bring a pillow or blanket to sit on, a flashlight, and a bloodcurdling yarn to share.

Proximity Effect featuring Vital Vice, SunDogs, Fly Freak, and Galactic Battleground

What: Music, Arts, Gaming
When: Saturday, December 29th at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

Music, amazing physical feats, and an intense Galactic Battlegrounds tournament projected on a big screen come together for this unique night at Can Can Wonderland. Expect futuristic sounds from musical acts Vital Vice and Sun Dogs, with the amazing acts of physical prowess from Fly Freak Yoga. Tickets are $2 (in RoboCop terms, you’d “buy that for a dollar,” but twice), and this is a 21+ event.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, December 29th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, December 30th at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Marathon

What: Movies, Books
When: Sunday, December 30th at 10:45 a.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

Spend 730 minutes with your fellow Lord of the Rings geeks, hobbits, elves, dwarves, and orcs at the Riverview Theater’s annual back-to-back trilogy screening. This year’s program will be screening the extended editions of the film, and the event will include a costume contest. Doors will open at 9:45 a.m., and the first showing, The Fellowship of the Ring, will begin at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 30th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Community, Arts, Gaming
When: Sunday, December 30th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Pillsbury House Theatre (Minneapolis)

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be attending the Mondo Queer Sledding Party, an intergenerational event for the whole trans community and its allies! As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Lakes & Legends Game Night—Board Games and a Magic Draft!

What: Gaming
When: Sunday, December 30th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Lakes & Legends Brewing Company

Make a legend for yourself with a late afternoon and early evening filled with gaming at Lakes & Legends, a Minneapolis brewery known for beautiful atmosphere, and a focus on Belgian and other styles of beer. Lakes & Legends will be collaborating with their neighbor, Mead Hall Games, for board-gaming fun and a Magic: The Gathering-draft event, which will cost $15 for entry. Lakes & Legends is in a dense neighborhood right outside of downtown, but per the event listing, they do validate parking for a couple nearby ramps, so that shouldn’t stop you from getting your game on.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, December 30th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory

This weekly event gives families a chance to experience virtual reality, soda, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great Saint Louis Park location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, which covers one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.
