Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, December 3rd to Sunday, December 9th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, December 3rd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, December 4th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (Saint Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Books & Bars: Kitchen Confidential

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, December 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Monster Brewing

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential—the updated deluxe version—as an opportunity to revisit Bourdain’s work in the wake of his passing.

YogaQuest Continues: TBD

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, December 4th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is to be determined, so be ready for anything, and check the meetup group as the event gets closer. This event costs $15.

Speculations Book Release Reading!

What: Books
When: Wednesday, December 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: DreamHaven Books and Comics

The Speculations reading series returns with Scourge of the Seas of Time (and Space), a new anthology of pirate tales from Queen of Swords Press which will be released shortly, so come celebrate with an evening of pirate tales. The anthology’s editor, Catherine Lundoff, and a contributor, Michael Merriam, will be present to read from the book, discuss piracy, and hand out snacks. Shiver your timbers, and get on down to one of the greatest geeky shops in the metro area!

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and other times. See the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

PLAY/TEST

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, December 6th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit GLITCH that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

First Thursday Films: Detroit

What: Movies, Educational, Music
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Capri Theater

First Thursday Films at the Capri Theater—a screening and speaking series—will be showing Detroit, a film focused on terrifying moments from the civil unrest that gripped Detroit in the summer of 1967, directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow. The screening will be followed by a conversation lead by David Grant, a Twin Cities-based filmmaker, author, screenwriter, and playwright. Tickets are $5.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Brazil

What: Movies
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Come see Terry Gilliam’s dystopian classic at the Parkway Theater. Brazil focuses on a lowly bureaucrat who has a rich dream-life eventually being pulled into a terrorist plot, and a complex web of lies. Tickets are $9 in advance or $11 at the door. This will be a 35-millimeter screening of the film, which is a bizarre visual treat showcasing Terry Gilliam at his best, and is worth a viewing for fans of strange cinema.

Wicked Wenches Cabaret: Strip Wars Holiday Special

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 6th at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 7th at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 8th at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, December 9th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minnsky Theater

Wicked Wenches Cabaret will be performing their holiday extravaganza featuring an adaptation of the Star Wars Holiday Special in a vaudeville style. “Vaudeville is adult comedy dance theater and is 18+ as there will be adult themes,” so only adults will get to see whether Chewbacca can get back to Kashyyyk to see family for Life Day. Costumes and revelry are encouraged, as there will be adult beverages and a photo booth! Tickets run from $15–30.

No Coast Craft-o-Rama

What: Arts, Community, Family
When: Friday, December 7th at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 8th at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Midtown Global Market

The Holiday No Coast Craft-o-Rama is coming, and is a great opportunity to track down unique works of art and craft, and see the great works that local artists can create. This show has been held annually since 2005, and has been bringing great art to the Twin Cities. See the website for more information on artists, etc. Parking is available on the street and in a parking garage across from Midtown Global Market.

Saint Paul European Christmas Market

What: Arts, Community, Food & Drink
When: Friday, December 7th at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday December 8th at 11:00 a.m.; and Sunday, December 9th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Union Depot (East Plaza)

Enjoy the warmth of your community at this open-air, European-style Christmas market in Saint Paul, with handmade local gifts and decor, European-inspired food and delicacies, and of course, Glühwein (spiced mulled wine). These markets are popular in Germany and Austria during the advent season, and bring warmth and cheer in spite of looming winter.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, December 7th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

GPS Movie Night

What: Movies
When: Friday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Join the Geek Partnership Society for a movie night revolving around the theme of connection through two very different films. The first film of the night is about the way lives impact each other over generations, and how a soul is slowly shaped from killer to hero. The second film follows two drag performers and a transgender woman across the outback as they perform their unique style of cabaret. This is a free event, but make sure to RSVP online.

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South Saint Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical-mech combat! The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop-mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech. Where else can you while away an evening with mech-carnage?

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 7th and Saturday December 8th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

The first two performances for this year’s production of A Klingon Christmas Carol are happening this Friday and Saturday night at the Historic Mounds Theatre in Saint Paul. Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” it will teach you the true meaning of honor in the face of the long night. General-admission tickets are $18, with VIP tickets for $35. Seating is reserved, and some performances sell out, so advance ticket purchases are recommended.

GPS Holiday Emporium

When: Saturday, December 8th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Find something special for the people in your life at this holiday emporium featuring geeky artists, jolly old Saint Nick, snacks, music, and more, all helping the cause of bringing educational programming to youth. There will be treasures sold from auction vaults, including toys, art, games, and more.

Twin Cities Holiday Princess Ball

What: Arts, Family, Movies
When: Saturday, December 8th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: 3200 East 81st Street (Bloomington)

Bring the whole family for a magical holiday celebration with familiar princess characters! There will be dancing, stage performances, stories, picture opportunities, and more. This event proved popular enough that the original Sunday event sold out, leading to this overflow event, so interested parties should be proactive. Tickets range from $25–35.

A Christmas Story Movie Party

What: Movies, Community
When: Saturday, December 8th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse

You are officially double-dog dared to not miss this annual holiday celebration at the Drafthouse. Bunny PJs are encouraged for this screening of A Christmas Story, the holiday classic with dangerously cold metal poles, Ralphie, and a child’s dangerous Christmas wish. Tickets are $12.99 and include interactive props.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, December 9th at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, December 9th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Community, Arts, Gaming
When: Sunday, December 9th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Pillsbury House Theatre (Minneapolis)

Gender Jam—a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth—will be meeting up for an afternoon of community and fun. This week, Gender Jam will meet up for Total Trans Take-Over of the Roller Garden! As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, December 9th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory

This weekly event gives families a chance to experience virtual reality, soda, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great Saint Louis Park location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, which covers one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.
