Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, January 14th to Sunday, January 20th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, January 14th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, January 15th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Poetry Club St. Paul

What: Arts, Books, Community
When: Tuesday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Amore Coffee (Saint Paul)

Join with fellow poets and poetry enthusiasts for a friendly Cracked Walnut writing workshop in a cozy Saint Paul location. Have your work critiqued, and hear poetic works in progress; swing by a little early to get a hot beverage. All are welcome.

Cage Match: A Nicolas Cage-Matching Game

What: Movies, Trivia, Family
When: Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing

Nicolas Cage is a prolific and talented actor who seems to frequently take whatever work is floated in his direction, and last week was his birthday. What better way to celebrate the man responsible for Oscar-winning performances, campy brilliance, and the occasional sleepy dud, than with a Nicolas Cage-matching game? This is a movie-trivia event with beer, prizes, and more.

Harry Potter Trivia!

What: Trivia, Books
When: Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 612Brew (Minneapolis)

Test your knowledge of all things Harry Potter for a chance to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida! This is a four-person-team trivia event with a maximum of 45 teams per event, and a combination of your three best scores will be used to determine the winner, so this is a serious trivia event for teams who will be in for the long haul.

When: Wednesday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Steamship Coffee and Tea

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Trash Film Debauchery: Escape From Hell

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Long-running local cult-cinema group Trash Film Debauchery returns to the Trylon for Escape From Hell, a short film about a scientist who brings about near-death experiences in order to study the afterlife (and, of course, has some run-ins with hell along the way). Tickets are $7. Expect some truly horrifying special effects.

Brews and Board Games at the Herkimer Pub and Brewery

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, January 17th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Herkimer Pub and Brewery

Drink, game, and be merry at this event hosted at the Herkimer, and put on by Uffda games. Come meet fellow gamers and have a beer and some food. This event is intended as a way to bring adult gamers together with game developers for hobnobbing and learning new games. There will be happy hour specials and a raffle at this event.

Trivia Against Humanity Thursdays

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery decked out in steampunk decor and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has also expanded and now has weekly events at Mortimer’s and Glam Doll on Tuesdays and other times. See the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, January 17th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, January 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical-mech combat! The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop-mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open-gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Sub-Zero Comic Con

What: Comics, Conventions, Arts
When: Saturday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis-Richfield American Legion

While the temperature outside may easily drop below zero (current predictions actually indicate only 10–20 degrees below freezing), the comics and artists here will be hot! This is your chance to find great comics to fill your winter months with fun. There will be featured artists such as Tom Nguyen, Otis Frampton, and Dave Wheeler, along with vendors carrying comics from the gold, silver, and modern age.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut 4K Restoration

What: Movies
When: Saturday, January 19th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

See the science-fiction-noir classic Blade Runner on the big screen, in a loving 4K restoration. Blade Runner imagines a world of environmental devastation, corporate superpowers, and—most importantly—artificial beings. This slow-burn thriller follows someone hunting these beings, and raises questions of humanity against the backdrop of a beautiful neon-lit dystopia. Tickets are $7, and going fast.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, January 20th at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, January 20th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, January 20th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory

This weekly event gives families a chance to experience virtual reality, soda, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great Saint Louis Park location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, which covers one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.
