Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 18th to Sunday, February 24th.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, February 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, February 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, February 19th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Networking Happy Hour

What: Books, Meetup
When: Tuesday, February 19th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Du Nord Craft Spirits

Do you want to get to know local editing professionals in a great craft distillery? If so, this event put on by Minneapolis PEN is right for you. Current and prospective members are welcome to this erudite organization of people who make their living from the written word. Du Nord Craft Spirits carries a variety of craft liquors, including gin, vodka and whiskey, and while it does not serve food, there are frequently food trucks parked outside.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique—presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History—is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s topic is “Good Weeds and Bad Weeds: Saving Our Underwater Prairies in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes,” featuring Mike Verhoeven, Ph.D. candidate in fisheries and aquatic biology at the University of Minnesota. This event will focus on the complex underwater ecosystems of our region, and the complex threats they face today. Tickets are $5–$12, online or at the door.

YogaQuest Continues

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Tuesday, February 19th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Blue Box Counseling and Wellness

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. The theme for this week is to be determined, so be ready for anything, and check the Meetup group as the event gets closer. This event is winding down, and will be replaced by online classes in the near future.

GothiCoffee

What: Meetup
When: Wednesday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Steamship Coffee and Tea

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

February Workshop: Song Writing

What: Comedy & Theater, Educational, Music
When: Wednesday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown Heating & Cooling Community Gathering Space

Learn what it takes to make a great song with this February workshop from Fearless Comedy Productions. The event will be led by Phillip Simondet, an accomplished local songwriter, and is open to folks regardless of inexperience. So, learn song-writing techniques to get you started, or refine your technique. This event is $10 to non-Fearless members.

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Brew and Board Games

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, February 21st
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Brews and Board Games is a Meetup group bringing together board games and beer. This month’s event will be hosted at BlackStack Brewing, a place known for innovative beers. Enjoy a good beer, some great company, and games.

Third Thursday: Afrofuturism

What: Arts, Meetup, Educational
When: Thursday, February 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Minneapolis Institute of Art continues the free Third Thursday series with an evening of discovery via literature and art to focused on Afrofuturism. This evening will be curated by theater artist Junauda Alma Petrus, and feature poetry, collaborative art, zine making, and more, all focused around a theme of Afrofuturism. This event will celebrate the opening of Mia’s new exhibit, Mapping Black Identities, and seeks to challenge the idea that blackness is monolithic.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, February 21st at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

VGM CON 2019

What: Music, Gaming, Conventions
When: Friday, February 22nd at 4:00 p.m. to Sunday, February 24th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Sheraton West

Were some of your earliest and strongest musical memories formed through video games? Do you find yourself fascinated with the way that music can be used to enhance the interactive storytelling of games? Then this is the convention for you. This convention brings the worlds of music and video games together for a weekend of fun and learning. Expect panels, workshops, and more, all focused on the ways that video games and music might come together. Tickets start at roughly $50 after fees.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, February 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

Fearless Five: Noir

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Historic Mounds Theatre

See five new plays centered around a single theme: noir. Presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, enjoy stories of criminals trying to pull off a heist while outsmarting the law and the censors, a psychic detective and a skeptic, a classic noir tale with a twist, the revelations of an Uber driver, and a positive detective. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door, and check out our review of last year’s Fearless Five series for more info.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, February 22nd at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Minnesota Boston Scientific FIRST LEGO League State Championship

What: Science & Technology, Educational, Family
When: Saturday, February 23rd at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Washington Technology Magnet School (Saint Paul)

This is the best opportunity to see a robotics competition in the Twin Cities, and will give you the opportunity to cheer on robotics teams from the region! Marvel at the technical expertise and teamwork in the FIRST LEGO League State Championship! This is a great opportunity to encourage children in STEM and build a better world with robotics, while having fun along the way.

The Dark Crystal

What: Movies
When: Saturday, February 23rd at 1:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

See Jim Henson’s mind-bending work of puppet fantasy with The Dark Crystal, a fantasy tale of the little people caught between an ancient feud between powerful magical beings. This is a bizarre and highly creative work, and has some disturbing imagery that may scare kids (and unnerve adults). Tickets are $5 for presale.

Cold Region, Colder Planet

What: Movies, Community, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 206 Central Avenue (Buffalo)

It may be cold in Minnesota in the winter, but at least we don’t need to pop open tauntauns to sleep through the night (yet). This Sci-Fi Saturday event from Wright County Geeks is a great opportunity to informally meet up with other geeks and talk works of science fiction and fantasy that have winter themes, such as The Empire Strikes Back, Snowpiercer, and more. This is a fairly informal event, so come on down and chill out with your fellow geeks.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, February 23rd at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

MN Toy Posse After Valentines Swap and Sale

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Sunday, February 24th at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Warm your heart in this wintry season with a swap meet and sale with fellow Twin Cities toy geeks, as assembled by the MN Toy Posse. Expect two tables, jam packed with various novelty items, collectibles, and toys. It should go without saying, but treasures and fellowship await on this Sunday morning event.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, February 24th at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, February 24th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Family Sunday Funday

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational, Family
When: Sunday, February 24th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory

This weekly event gives families a chance to experience virtual reality, soda, and pizza for a special price at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for families of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great Saint Louis Park location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details. This event is $20 per person, which covers one hour of VR, pizza, and soda.
