Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 25th to Sunday, March 31st.

Game Changers

What: Educational, Gaming, Family, Arts
When: Daily through May 5th; see site for museum hours
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

When cutting-edge science and technology interface with art, you can get beautiful things. Video games have been on the forefront of this for decades, and the Science Museum of Minnesota has a new exhibit, Game Changers, dedicated to showing this history. Enjoy over a 100 playable games including arcade classics, see concept art, and much more. This exhibit is included with museum admission. See our take on it here.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, March 25th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, March 25th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, March 26th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Movie Trivia!

What: Trivia, Movies
When: Tuesday, March 26th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

This movie-trivia event, presented by If I Only Had a Brain Movie Trivia, continues at Moon Palace Books. Expect challenging movie trivia, great prize support, and a fun community. Admission is free, and showing up early to grab a coffee or cider at Geek Love Cafe is strongly encouraged.

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-themed trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. This month’s theme is “Spring Colors,” so get ready for spring and brush up on the other topics listed on the event page.

Thursday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, March 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mead Hall Games

Game on at Mead Hall, a local game shop just south of downtown Minneapolis. This is a great opportunity to meet up with a community of friendly and avid gamers, show off your favorites, and get shown all the “new hotness” by the event’s organizers. Enjoy!

The Hobbit

What: Comedy & Theater, Books, Family
When: Thursday, March 28th through Sunday, March 31st; multiple showings; continuing until April 14th
Where: Children’s Theatre Company

The Hobbit, Tolkien’s excellent children’s fantasy novel, and arguably many folks introduction into the genre, tells the tale of a reluctant adventurer, dwarves, and a dragon. It’s a simpler tale than The Lord of the Rings, with stakes that are easy to grasp, and a clear character arc for its lead. Shows run two hours, with a 20-minute intermission. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, March 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Dream Theater

What: Music
When: Thursday, March 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Ordway

Dream Theater, a genre-bending progressive-metal and hard-rock group with decades of experience, will be coming to the Ordway. Die-hard fans of the band, and music geeks in general, should be in for a treat at this concert. Take a journey through the strange worlds that this band conjures. Tickets start at $49.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, March 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Friday Night Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Friday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.; continuing weekly
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

The Level Up board-gaming community will be hosting a weekly board-game tournament with promos, prizes, and a chance to learn new games and meet fellow board-game geeks. This event will continue weekly until further notice. Entry for this event is $5, and there will be a different featured game every week.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, March 29th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

EgoCon 2019

What: Conventions
When: Saturday, March 30th at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Stevens Point Holiday Inn & Convention Center (Stevens Point, WI)

EgoCon is a Wisconsin-based Doctor Who and science-fiction convention. This year it will be held at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn & Convention Center, and will be a great opportunity to connect with other fans, meet authors, see life-sized daleks, play games, take part in a charity auction, and more. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.

e2 Young Engineers STEM Program Free Workshop

What: Science & Technology, Educational, Family
When: Saturday, March 30th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Central Park, Woodbury Library Building

This free workshop is a great way for young minds to be opened up to the world of STEM through play. In this free event aimed at six-to-10-year olds, kids will have access to a system of patented bricks that they can use to build motorized models in an exercise of problem solving and creativity. So, see if your little one is right for this internationally well-received program.

The Wizard of Oz

What: Movies
When: Saturday, March 30th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

See the classic tale of tornadoes, talking trees, poppies, witches, and proto-adventuring parties traveling across a magic land at the Parkway. This 1939 film was revolutionary in a lot of ways, and has a great local connection in Judy Garland. Tickets are $7 in presale, with discounts available for folks under the age of 13.

TSL’s Armageddon III

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Saturday, March 30th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: James Ballentine Uptown VFW Post 246

Full-contact lightsaber combat is the Saber Legion’s raison d’être, and this event will not disappoint saber-combat fans! This event will feature a number of vicious Star Wars–inspired saber bouts, including Jimmy Sourile and Charley Cummings versus Jared Graham and Russell William as the main event. Tickets are $10 presale or $12 at the door. See who has the midi-chlorians, the high ground, or the skills necessary to triumph!

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Central Library

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, March 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Weekly Belly Dance Classes with Shannon

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, March 31st at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.
Where: Open Minds Fusion Studio

This class incorporates a variety of dance styles, including tribal fusion, Greek, American Egyptian, and world fusion and is taught by instructor Shannon (whom readers might know from Geek Slink Belly Dance). These weekly classes will help build a strong core and set of skills, and is intended for all bodies, all ages, all sizes, and is built on a platform of acceptance and inclusivity. Cost is $15. Please note: there are two different classes offered on Sundays. The 10:15 class is intended for all skill levels and beginners may find more forgiving, while the 11:15 class is for an intermediate skill level.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 31st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Boyz II Men

What: Music
When: Sunday, March 31st at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Ordway

Music geeks and old-schoolers are in for a treat with this concert event hosted at the Ordway. See beloved multioctave R&B performers Boyz II Men live. This group has strongly inspired a wide swath of modern pop performers, and could be seen as foundational to the musical world we inhabit today. Tickets start at $79.
