To mark 25 years since the first Hellboy comic, Dark Horse has declared that March 23, 2019, is officially Hellboy Day.
Not only can I barely believe that it’s been 25 years since I first saw Hellboy on the shelves of what was then my local comic store in the Hillcrest Center, it’s hard to get my head around how extensive the adventures have become. With two live-action movies in the past and a reboot coming soon, a dozen spinoff series (check out this handy timeline), and 23 Eisner Awards (particularly for Dave Stewart’s color work), there certainly is a lot to celebrate.
Participating stores will have a selection of promotional items, which include a double-sided timeline poster, temporary tattoos, and more. Dark Horse is also issuing a special edition of the comic that launched it all, Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1: “This special 25th anniversary edition of the first issue of Hellboy depicts his arrival on earth in the midst of WWII to the return of his adoptive father from a failed Arctic expedition, and Hellboy’s first encounter with Mignola’s infamous frog monsters. Features a new cover by Mignola with Dave Stewart.”
Locally, Hot Comics and Collectibles (all three locations), Level Up Games (both Level Up locations and Mead Hall), Source Comics and Games in Roseville, and Issues Needed in Apple Valley are all confirmed to be participating and will have the promo items on hand. In addition, the Source will be doing a giveaway related to the upcoming movie, and Issues Needed is running specials on all of their Hellboy comics.
Level Up South St. Paul, which was a runner-up in a promotional contest Dark Horse held for retailers, will have some especially special giveaways and sales going on. The store is giving away five copies of the first Hellboy ominbus—two in the store and three through social media—and Hellboy graphic novels will be 40% off at that location.
Lastly, the Minneapolis location of Dreamers Vault Games won’t have the official promotional items but will be offering 10% off Hellboy-related items. (Store staff also note they have the Holiday Hellboy mini in stock.) The other Dreamers Vault locations are not participating.
If you don’t see your local store above, check with them to see whether they have anything planned. And be sure you’re following Twin Cities Geek on Hellboy Day—we’ll have a giveaway of our own!
