Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 15th to Sunday, April 21st.

38th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival

What: Movies
When: April 15th through April 20th
Where: Various

The theme of the 38th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival is “A World Beyond,” and this event will be bringing films from around the world. Film geeks take heed: there may be screenings that interest you here. See the website for screening and event details. There’s a variety of options for tickets and passes, but most general admission tickets are $15.

Game Changers

What: Educational, Gaming, Family, Arts
When: Daily through May 5th; see site for museum hours
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

When cutting-edge science and technology interface with art, you can get beautiful things. Video games have been on the forefront of this for decades, and the Science Museum of Minnesota has a new exhibit, Game Changers, dedicated to showing this history. Enjoy over a 100 playable games including arcade classics, see concept art, and much more. This exhibit is included with museum admission, and you can check out our take on it here.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, April 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, April 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, April 16th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Tuesday, April 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique—presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History—is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s topic is yet to be announced, but should stir participants with fresh scientific ideas. Tickets are $5–$12, online or at the door.

Surly Pizza Upstairs Game Night

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 17th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

This weekly event at Surly Brewing is an invitation to enjoy some games, company, and food specials. Guests are invited to grab a drink, grab a game from their library, and be merry. This gaming is all supported by a special where $40 gets you a pitcher of beer, a pizza, appetizer or salad, and dessert

When: Wednesday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Steamship Coffee and Tea

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Mead Hall Melee

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Mead Hall Games

Get your competitive gaming on with this evening of Super Smash Bros. Melee in a bracket form. This will be a weekly event, entry is $10, and participants are encouraged to bring their own controllers and/or setups if possible. Can you win glory and kudos?

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Brews & Board Games

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, April 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing

Drink, game, and be merry for a good cause at this event hosted at Modist, and put on by Uffda Games. Come meet fellow gamers and have a beer and some food. This event is intended as a way to bring adult gamers together with game developers for hobnobbing and learning new games. There will be happy-hour specials and a raffle at this event, with proceeds going to Extra Life and Gilette Children’s Hospital.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

The Foreign Resort, Panic Priest, and Grave Society

What: Music
When: Thursday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Red Sea (Minneapolis)

Fans of dark new wave and other dark vibes (some attendees of Transmission, Gothicoffee, or Dark Energy may fit the bill) are in for a night of great music put on by Kilted Farmer. The event will be headlined by the Foreign Resort with guests Panic Priest, Grave Society, and DJ sets by Hyperkarma. The Foreign Resort has toured extensively, and per Kilted Farmer, “combines the shadowy mysticism of the Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem.” Tickets for this event are $12 in advance, or $15 at the door.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, April 18th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey (Minneapolis)

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

They Live

What: Movies
When: Friday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 20th at 9:45 p.m.; and Sunday, April 21st at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon

Are you ready for a hellish vision of a world in which our corporate overlords are actually vicious alien punch-clock villains? Are you ready for the greatest too-long fistfight in cinema history (thanks, Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David)? Then come on down for They Live, and remember to make the choice between chewing bubble gum and kicking ass. This film is part of the Trylon’s Reaganland: 1980s Dystopia series, examining films brought about the anxieties of America as it faced a rapidly changing society full of challenges. Tickets are $8.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, April 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Haidong Gumbdo and Taekwondo at GPS

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Friday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Get some exercise, ground yourself, learn about Korean culture, or prepare for the zombie apocalypse with either Haidong Gumbdo or tae kwo ndo classes at the Geek Partnership Society. Haidon Gumbdo is a sword art, making use of wooden practice swords called bokkem, while tae kwon do is a Korean self-defense form. This class will work to prepare attendees for the first belt, the gold belt, so wear clothes that you can move around in!

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical-mech combat! The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop-mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, April 20th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open-gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, April 20th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Central Library

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

My Neighbor Totoro

What: Movies
When: Saturday, April 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse

The Alamo Drafthouse continues its Studio Ghibli-screening series with My Neighbor Totoro, a fantasy film set in post-war rural Japan that tells the story of spirits and the relationship of two sisters. This is an award-winning film, and has developed a cult following over the decades after its release. This screening is a dubbed version of the film; tickets are $7.

ATC Go Club

What: Community, Gaming
When: Sunday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Building Room 106

Anime Twin Cities runs a regular Go club for those interested in learning what may be the oldest continuously played strategy game on the planet. Go is an abstract strategy game with game pieces played on a grid. The organizers of this event will have spare boards and equipment, and will be happy to teach interested parties.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 21st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
