This Week in Geek 4-22

Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 22nd to Sunday, April 28th.

Game Changers

What: Educational, Gaming, Family, Arts
When: Daily through May 5th; see site for museum hours
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

When cutting-edge science and technology interface with art, you can get beautiful things. Video games have been on the forefront of this for decades, and the Science Museum of Minnesota has a new exhibit, Game Changers, dedicated to showing this history. Enjoy over a 100 playable games including arcade classics, see concept art, and much more. This exhibit is included with museum admission, and you can check out our take on it here.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, April 22nd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, April 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.


What: Movies
When: Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Where: Trylon

Akira is an animated classic that deserves to be seen. This film follows bikers in Neo-Tokyo as they uncover a sinister government project that threatens to unleash nightmares on the city. Tickets are $8. Please enjoy yourself, but don’t turn into a telepathic monster and unleash danger and horror on Longfellow and Seward.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, April 23rd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

More Work. Less Talk.

What: Educational, Community
When: Tuesday, April 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Southdale Library, Helen Young Room (Edina)

The Professional Editors Network presents “More Work. Less Talk,” an educational event focused on helping editors find work. Whether you are looking for more freelance work, a permanent gig, or something else, the presenters at this great learning event have experience covering staffing agencies, freelance writing, publishing, and more.

Surly Pizza Upstairs Game Night

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 24th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

This weekly event at Surly Brewing is an invitation to enjoy some games, company, and food specials. Guests are invited to grab a drink, grab a game from their library, and be merry. This gaming is all supported by a special where $40 gets you a pitcher of beer, a pizza, appetizer or salad, and dessert.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-themed trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. This month’s theme is “Future So Bright,” so get ready for a bright future and brush up on the other topics listed on the event page.

Mead Hall Melee

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Mead Hall Games

Get your competitive gaming on with this evening of Super Smash Bros. Melee in a bracket form. This will be a weekly event, entry is $10, and participants are encouraged to bring their own controllers and/or setups if possible. Can you win glory and kudos?

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Avengers: Endgame Opening Night Party

What: Movies, Meetup, Family
When: Thursday, April 25th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

Celebrate the culmination of years of MCU goodness with this celebration of the release of Avengers: Endgame at the Drafthouse. This will be a night of fun for the whole family, with opportunities for photo ops with professional cosplayers, special merchandise from Funko and Mondo, a themed menu, and a chance to pay your respects to the fallen heroes of the past Avengers film.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, April 26th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Haidong Gumdo and Taekwondo at GPS

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Friday, April 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Get some exercise, ground yourself, learn about Korean culture, or prepare for the zombie apocalypse with either Haidong Gumdo or taekwondo classes at the Geek Partnership Society. Haidong Gumdo is a sword art, making use of wooden practice swords called bokkem, while taekwondo is a Korean self-defense form. This class will work to prepare attendees for the first belt—the gold belt—so wear clothes that you can move around in!

Throwback Arcade Week

What: Gaming, Food & Drink, Family
When: Friday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m.; continuing through May 3rd
Where: Bourbon Butcher (Farmington)

Come on down to Farmington for throwback cocktails and retro-arcade fun, with a variety of drink specials and old-school arcade games. Every specialty cocktail or kids meal is worth a number of arcade tokens, so folks of all ages can enjoy. Retro clothes are encouraged, but not required by any means.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, April 26th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Whatever, Man: Vilification Tennis Acknowledges the ’90s

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, April 26th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilification Tennis, a local structured-improv show focused on insult contests, will return to the Bryant-Lake Bowl for a night of comedy that acknowledges that the 1990s were a thing, or whatever. Do you remember those halcyon days of comically slow internet and multiple Star Trek series on the air at one time? Tickets are $15, or $12 with a Minnesota Fringe button.

Independent Bookstore Day

What: Books
When: Saturday, April 27th (all day)
Where: Independent bookstores everywhere

On the last Saturday in April, indie bookstores around the country celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with sales, author appearances, giveaways, and more. Watch for our dedicated guide to what’s going on for Bookstore Day in Minnesota, coming later this week.

Teen Lit Con

What: Family, Conventions, Books, Education
When: Saturday, April 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Henry Sibley High School (Mendota Heights)

This is a great opportunity for authors and teens to meet up for break-out sessions, book signings, workshops, and more. There will be authors in the exhibit hall for much of the day, with the headliners being Tomi Adeyemi, Becky Albertalli, Lamar Giles, and Jarrett Krosoczkasee; see the website for details on specific authors and scheduling. There will be concessions for sale during the event.

Book Signing/Meet & Greet with A. Rose

What: Books, Meetup
When: Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Half Price Books (St. Louis Park)

This is your chance to meet up-and-coming author A. Rose, and get copies of her new work, Daughters of Athena. Daughters of Athena is set after a dragon attack on Chicago, and follows the story of Amara, a dragon slayer from a government dragon-slaying program called Athena. Everything Amara thinks she knows is called into question, and she must decide how to proceed.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, April 27th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

New or neck deep into comic? It doesn’t matter! Share what comics you’ve read this week, get plenty of recommendations, have a drink, share fries, sit back, and have a great time. Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, April 27th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics & Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Queers Exploring Dystopias: Vox

What: Books
When: Sunday, April 28th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: See Meetup group; only available to members

Queers Exploring Dystopias is a literary-Meetup group intended for queer ladies and non-binary and trans folks, and explores dystopian literature through that lens. This group is not intended for cis men at this time. The Meetup page is available to members, and includes location details. The book being discussed this month is Vox, set in a future in which the government has declared that women are not allowed to speak.
