Every year on the first Saturday in May, comic shops open their doors to give out specially designated comics for free as well as take the opportunity to host creator appearances, sales, giveaways, and more. This year, Free Comic Book Day also coincides with my all-time favorite holiday: May the 4th! Whether you celebrate Star Wars Day or not, there are some solid comics deals going on in the Twin Cities.
Click here for the full list of free comics that will be available this year, and click here for some tips on preparing your plan of attack. (NPR’s Glen Weldon also offers an annual guide to the available comics if you’d like to tailor your choices.) Get to your favorite store early, because they won’t last long.
And finally, be sure to support your local business if you can. Free Comic Book Day comics may be free for us, but they’re not free for the stores, so buying a couple issues, an action figure, or some other item to go with your freebies is a huge help to your neighborhood store. Many locations have special sales going on to encourage you to do just that, and you can find all that information below!
