Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 6th to Sunday, May 12th.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, May 6th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, May 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

ACTORS, The Bellwether Syndicate, and Autumn at the Nomad

What: Music
When: Monday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Nomad

Kilted Farmer presents an evening of dark post-punk with ACTORS, The Bellwether Syndicate, and Autumn, all performing at the Nomad. Tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. Fans of Dark Energy, and similar folks who geek out to dark vibes in their music, are in for a treat. See the event listing for links to the individual bands if you’re interested in learning more.

VR Student Night

What: Science & Technology, Gaming, Educational
When: Tuesday, May 7th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory (St. Louis Park)

This weekly event gives students 50% off to the VR Menu at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratories. This is a great opportunity for students of all types (K–12, college, etc.) to explore virtual reality in a great location. There’s a wide variety of possibilities here, including fun, education, and more; see the website for more details.

Books & Bars: Born a Crime

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, May 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler Brewing

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, his personal story of a childhood in South Africa during the ’80s and ’90s, and what it meant to be biracial in an apartheid state.

Surly Pizza Upstairs Game Night

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, May 8th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

This weekly event at Surly Brewing is an invitation to enjoy some games, company, and food specials. Guests are invited to grab a drink, grab a game from their library, and be merry. This gaming is all supported by a special where $40 gets you a pitcher of beer, a pizza, appetizer or salad, and dessert.

Mystic Dawn/Amtgard: Park Day

What: Gaming, Sports & Fitness
When: Wednesday, May 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Oak Grove Park

Amtgard, a global organization focused on the sport of medieval-fantasy combat, will be hosting a gathering in Oak Grove Park. Participants can take part in glorious quests, battle, and more, all with the use of foam weapons for the sake of safety. Garb is encouraged, but not required, and loaner weapons are available. This is a free-to-play event, but long-term players are expected to support the organization with $6 or $10 dues.

Looking for Playtesters

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, May 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

Are you a player interested in testing out yet-to-be-released tabletop games being built by local creators? Are you a game creator looking for testers? This event brings the two groups together to get developers the feedback they need.

TC Trek Trivia: Relative Relativity

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all Star Trek-television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Wordplay

What: Books, Community, Nightlife
When: Friday, May 10th through Sunday, May 12th
Where: The Loft Literary Center

Where else can you celebrate the written word with a variety of events from literary luminaries? This event will bring famous authors like Stephen King, Mitch Albom, Amy Tan, Dave Barry, Bill McKibben, Tommy Orange, Jared Diamond, and more to the Twin Cities. Enjoy a street fest, chances to meet writers, and a variety of other events, all starting at $10 with the Street Fest Access pass. Related events include the Lit Crawl (see below) and a concert by the Rock Bottom Remainders (Amy Tan, Stephen King, Roy Blount, Jr., and Dave Barry) at First Avenue.

Hallie Quinn Brown Spring Tea Party

What: Community, Food & Drink
When: Friday, May 10th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Hallie Q. Brown Community Center

Enjoy a tea party while supporting the Hallie Q. Brown Center’s scholarship fund. This event will be a great chance to socialize while supporting this great community. There is a suggested donation of $10 for attendees. The winner of the Mary K. Boyd scholarship will be announced at this event.

Bad Weather Outdoor Arcade

What: Gaming, Food & Drink, Music, Family
When: Friday, May 10th at 3:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 11th at 12:00 p.m.; and Sunday, May 12th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing Co.

Bad Weather Brewing Company’s weekend-long outdoor-arcade party returns with special beer releases, food trucks, DJs, and tents full of classic arcade games, Skee-Ball, pinball, ping-pong, and more! This is a kid-friendly event, and entry to the brewery is free, with $5 getting you unlimited access to the games. The parking lot will be used to hold the game tents, so plan rides accordingly.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, May 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in Saint Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Read the Book/See the Movie

What: Movies, Books
When: Friday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: TBD (see posting for more information)

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m. the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, May 10th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu Cereal Party

What: Movies, Family, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, May 11th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

Enjoy an all-you-can-eat cereal buffet while being transported to the world of Pokémon at this special event at the Alamo Drafthouse. Your ticket to this screening of Detective Pikachu will guarantee you a morning of cereal-fueled movie magic and fellowship with your fellow Poke-Fans. Tickets are $12.43 and, as of this writing, rapidly running out, so jump in quickly if interested.

Free Video Game Day

What: Gaming, Community
When: Saturday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Heroic Goods & Games (Minneapolis)

Heroic Goods and Games, a friendly local store full of games and collectibles, will be handing out 150 bags to customers with free video games inside. Games are catered to specific systems of choice, and will be handed out one per person, on a first come, first served basis. The store will be limiting the number of participants at any given time in order to comply with the fire code.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, May 11th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

New or neck deep into comics? It doesn’t matter! Share what comics you’ve read this week, get plenty of recommendations, have a drink, share fries, sit back, and have a great time. Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Lit Crawl MN

What: Books, Meetup
When: Saturday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl, Red Stag Supper Club, Trapeze Bubbles Bar at Barbette, and more

The written word will be elevated and celebrated at this fourth annual crawl through Minneapolis. Free events will be held at a variety of locations and will feature work from Write on Mamas, Paper Darts, Graywolf Press, and more. Find the Lit Crawl event for you with the event schedule.

Saturday Night Space Opera: Maximum MAY-hem!

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Get your game on with three possible choices for science-fiction tabletop-role-playing, led by Saturday Night Space Opera. This event will be hosted at the Source, with games of Marvel Heroic Role-Playing Game, Mothership (a fairly new indie game focused on science-fiction horror like Alien or Event Horizon), and Masters of Umdaar (a Fate-powered game that tries to emulate science-fantasy adventures akin to John Carter of Mars). This is a free event led by great local GMs, who are happy to teach the rules and bring more people into the sci-fi-tabletop gaming fold.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, May 12th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics & Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
