Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 24, to Sunday, June 30.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, June 24, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Twin Cities Monday Night Backgammon

What: Gaming
When: Monday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Richfield American Legion

Enjoy a night of backgammon with two tournaments. Entry to this event is $5, and this is a great chance for both pros and newcomers to learn this classic game

Surly Cinema: Jaws

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Monday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

Surly Cinema will be lighting up Minneapolis nights with beer, food, and most importantly, free movies in the Beer Garden. Attendees are encouraged to bring a towel or lawn chair, and enjoy this summer’s theme of blockbusters. This week’s showing is Jaws, the film that made millions terrified of swimming, and probably did a lot of bad PR for sharks, who are just successful predators, not monsters.

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Movie Trivia!

What: Trivia, Movies
When: Tuesday, June 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

This movie-trivia event, presented by If I Only Had a Brain Movie Trivia, continues at Moon Palace Books. Expect challenging movie trivia, great prize support, and a fun community. Admission is free, and showing up early to grab a coffee or cider at Geek Love Cafe is strongly encouraged.

Terror Tuesday: Event Horizon

What: Movies
When: Tuesday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

Terror Tuesday, a horror-screening series at the Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities, seeks to liven up school nights with blood-pumping terror. Tickets are $5, and as always, the Alamo Drafthouse has a variety of food and drink available to enjoy with the film. This week’s screening is Event Horizon, a great work of original sci-fi horror that pulls a lot of spaceship design cues from films like Alien while focusing on a much more traditional, supernatural-horror narrative. If nothing else, Event Horizon is the best accidental prequel to Warhammer 40,000 that’s ever been made. Tickets are $5.00.

Mystic Dawn/Amtgard: Park Day

What: Gaming, Sports & Fitness
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Oak Grove Park

Amtgard, a global organization focused on the sport of medieval-fantasy combat, will be hosting a gathering in Oak Grove Park. Participants can take part in glorious quests, battle, and more, all with the use of foam weapons for the sake of safety. Garb is encouraged, but not required, and loaner weapons are available. This is a free-to-play event, but long-term players are expected to support the organization with $6 or $10 dues.

Murder on the Mississippi

What: Comedy & Theater, Educational
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Padelford Packet Boat Company, Harriet Island Park (St. Paul)

History and mystery geeks are in for a treat with this evening of intrigue on an 1850s riverboat. The setting is 1856 on the Mississippi River, as river traffic is hitting an all-time high. Can you and your friends help to prevent a murder most foul while taking in the vibrant and diverse world of St. Paul in the 1850s? Tickets are $25.

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who-themed trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. This month’s theme is “Summer WHO-liday,” so get in on some chill summer vibes with your favorite time-traveling alien.

Star Wars Night

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies, Family
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 7:10 p.m.
Where: Target Field

Baseball and Star Wars geeks are in for a treat on this night of rebel scum, fly balls, and Obi-Wan bobbleheads. The first 10,000 fans to arrive will receive a free Star Wars Minnesota Twins T-shirt. There’s a special Star Wars night package available for $84, in addition to regular price tickets. So come on down and enjoy one of the geekier major American sports while enjoying a giant geeky fandom.

Vampire’s Kiss

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, June 26, at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Brunson’s Pub (St. Paul)

Nicolas Cage is a prolific American actor known for a variety of roles, and for a certain level of energy he can bring. Trash Film Debauchery’s Traveling Patio Show presents Vampire’s Kiss, a treasure for fans of high-energy strange Cage. A young man working in the publishing industry in New York City in the late ’80s has an experience that transforms him, and leads to a descent into darkness and increasingly bizarre behavior. This event is free, and a great chance to see the source of many Nicolas Cage memes.

Cat Tour 2019!

What: Community, Educational
When: Thursday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Meet at Mueller Park (Minneapolis)

Urbanism geeks and fans of hyper-local political reporting may already be fans of the the Wedge Live, run by Minneapolis’s own John Edwards. Wedge Live will be hosting a tour of the Wedge neighborhood with a focus on its feline residents. Commemorative limited-edition buttons will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, June 28, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, June 28, at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Time Bandits

What: Movies
When: Saturday, June 29, at 12:30 p.m. (screening at 1:00 p.m.)
Where: Parkway Theater

Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits is a prime example of a certain brand of ’80s fantasy film that doesn’t really get made anymore. Take an original premise involving time-traveling thieves, throw in wacky imagery and memorable characters, and tie it all together with an evil sorcerer portrayed by one of the best sinister-character actors of our time, David Warner (Baldur’s Gate 2’s John Irenicus, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Gul Madred, and more). Tickets are $5 presale, or $6 at the door.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, June 29, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

New or neck deep into comics? It doesn’t matter! Share what comics you’ve read this week, get plenty of recommendations, have a drink, share fries, sit back, and have a great time. Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Water Lantern Festival

What: Family, Arts, Community, Music, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 29, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Phalen Regional Park

Launch lanterns onto Lake Phalen as part of a festival of hope and light. Tickets are $30, which includes admission, floating water lanterns, a marker to decorate your lantern, a commemorative drawstring bag, a wristband, and the cost of cleanup after the event. In addition to releasing lanterns onto the lake, enjoy food trucks, music, and other fun activities throughout the evening.

Napoleon Dynamite Screening and Q&A with the Stars

What: Movies
When: Saturday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Ordway

Prepare for a night of early- to mid-2000s nostalgia with a screening of the immensely quotable cult classic Napoleon Dynamite, and Q&A with stars Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, and Jon Gries. Napoleon Dynamite is a cult classic that introduced audiences to supreme awkwardness, ligers, lost dreams of football stardom, and old-school internet dating. Tickets run from $48 to $141.

A Night Under the Stars: An Up-Down Prom

What: Nightlife
When: Saturday, June 29, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Up-Down Minneapolis

Celebrate Stranger Things, chill summer vibes, and retro in this evening of dancing, music, and fun. Attendees are encouraged to wear prom attire, come with a date or friends, and make new memories. You will be able to support a local charity via your vote for prom king and queen. There’s no cover, but attendees must be at least 21 years of age.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 29, at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

MN Toy Posse June Swap

What: Arts, Community, Family
When: Sunday, June 30, at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Bloomington Knights of Columbus

Seek out vintage and new toys and other plunder to bring back to your home! This event at the Bloomington Knights of Columbus will be a great opportunity to track down rare stuff you might not otherwise find, and get in contact with other toy geeks. There will be over 70 tables worth of goodness.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 30, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics & Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
