Museum of the Moon

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: May 21–June 9
Where: Bell Museum (University of Minnesota)

It’s been 50 years since the first moon landing, and the Bell Museum is commemorating that momentous event with an installation featuring a 7-meter-diameter sculpture of the moon. Using detailed satellite images and lit with simulated moonlight, this massive work of art may give you some idea of how astronauts felt when they saw the moon up close. Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, June 3, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Twin Cities Monday Night Backgammon

What: Gaming
When: Monday, June 3, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Richfield American Legion

Enjoy a night of backgammon with two tournaments. Entry to this event is $5, and this is a great chance for both pros and newcomers to learn this classic game

Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event, so bring some of your own stuff to work on, bring some snacks, and hang out in a collaborative space.

Surly Cinema: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Monday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

Surly Cinema will be lighting up Minneapolis nights with beer, food, and most importantly, free movies in the Beer Garden. Attendees are encouraged to bring a towel or lawn chair, and enjoy this summer’s theme of blockbusters. This week’s showing is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder! To celebrate, the first 100 viewers will receive a Surly Bar, some of which will include Golden Tickets for beer, shows, and merch.

Terror Tuesday: Death Spa

What: Movies
When: Tuesday, June 4, at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

Terror Tuesday, a horror screening series at the Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities, seeks to liven up school nights with blood-pumping terror. Tickets are $5, and as always, the Alamo Drafthouse has a variety of food and drink available to enjoy with the film. This week’s screening is Death Spa, a film involving demons, computers, a spa, and death. Come for the death—stay for the synth-pop soundtrack.

Surly Pizza Upstairs Game Night

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, June 5, at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

This weekly event at Surly Brewing is an invitation to enjoy some games, company, and food specials. Guests are invited to grab a drink, grab a game from their library, and be merry. This gaming is all supported by a special where $40 gets you a pitcher of beer, a pizza, appetizer or salad, and dessert.

Mystic Dawn/Amtgard: Park Day

What: Gaming, Sports & Fitness
When: Wednesday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Oak Grove Park

Amtgard, a global organization focused on the sport of medieval-fantasy combat, will be hosting a gathering in Oak Grove Park. Participants can take part in glorious quests, battle, and more, all with the use of foam weapons for the sake of safety. Garb is encouraged, but not required, and loaner weapons are available. This is a free-to-play event, but long-term players are expected to support the organization with $6 or $10 dues.

Books & Bars: The Nix

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Dual Citizen Brewing Co.

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Nix by Nathan Hill. The Nix is a sprawling character study of parental abandonment, disappointment, and haunting.

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

Social Science: Who Invented That?

What: Science & Technology, Community, Arts, Nightlife, Educational
When: Thursday, June 6, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

The Science Museum of Minnesota will be presenting a night that celebrates innovation, and helps give credit to inventors who have changed our lives. Learn about the science and art of invention with a special focus on Leonardo da Vinci (a special treat if you happen to be Kathryn Janeway). This event is in support of the new Inventing Genius exhibit, and will also present local innovations. Social Science is 21+, with tickets going for $18.95 for nonmembers.

One-Shot Comics Book Club: The Wicked & The Divine, Volumes 1 & 2

What: Comics
When: Thursday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics, a monthly comic series devoted to covering a diverse range of comics and graphic novels, returns with a discussion of The Wicked & The Divine, a tale of two gods who incarnate once every 90 years, and the intense stardom that follows the divine. One-Shot Comics strives toward the goals of “creating an inclusive space” and “perpetual awesomeness.” As usual, you can pick up a copy for 20% off at Moon Palace Books.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Crippled Avengers

What: Movies
When: Thursday, June 6, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Able Seedhouse & Brewery

Trash Film Debauchery, a local film-screening series with a long history, will be bringing the martial-arts masterwork Crippled Avengers to Able Seedhouse & Brewery as part of its traveling patio series. Take in some most-excellent martial-arts action under the summer night sky. This film is a story of revenge, iron prostheses, and of course, kung fu. Best of all, it’s free!

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, June 7, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, June 7, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical-mech combat! The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop-mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

GPS Annual Picnic

What: Community, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 8, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Columbia Park Picnic Grounds (Minneapolis)

Come together with your fellow geeks for a day of food, fellowship, and fun under the sun! Geek Partnership Society has sponsored this event, and will be providing protein for grilling, buns, plates, and flatware, but encourages attendees to bring side dishes to share. Anyone interested in geeky activities is encouraged to join, as are members of Geek Partnership Society, their partners, family, and friends. There may also be activities involving flying objects and score keeping.

Goat to Your Happy Place

What: Food & Drink, Community, Family
When: Saturday, June 8, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Insight Brewing Co.

Come back to your happy place with the help of nature’s goofy and joyous acrobats: goats! Enjoy a summer day at Insight with goats, three specialty casks of beer, and food from DelSur Empanadas and more. An opportunity to hang out with goats in a cool local brewery doesn’t come around often, so don’t miss it.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, June 8, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

New or neck deep into comics? It doesn’t matter! Share what comics you’ve read this week, get plenty of recommendations, have a drink, share fries, sit back, and have a great time. Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Akihabara Anime Market

What: Community
When: Sunday, June 9, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Doubletree Park Place (St. Louis Park)

Anime Twin Cities is bringing back Akihabara, an annual free and public swap meet with a focus on trading or selling anime-related items. Items to be sold must be official merchandise, though unofficial items may be traded. Adult material is not permitted. Enjoy special door-prize drawings ever hour, and concessions to support Anime Twin Cities. Come support artists and crafters and find what you need.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 9, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics & Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Larp House Presents: The Hirelings

What: Gaming
When: Sunday, June 9, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Near Broadway and Emerson (North Minneapolis); details provided after registering

Larp House, a local group focused on live-action-role-playing games, presents The Hirelings, a LARP game focused on rookie adventurers getting in a bit over their heads in the search of riches and glory. This game focuses on the preparation for—and then aftermath of—a doomed crawl into a dark and dangerous dungeon. Wear loose-fitting clothing, and sign up ahead. This is a pay-what-you-want event.
