Anime Detour Reroutes to Downtown Minneapolis

This seems to be the year for local conventions to celebrate big anniversaries, and Anime Detour is no exception. The con’s 15th anniversary brought about a bigger change than other conventions, though—it moved downtown to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Minneapolis. The year 2018 also brought about its largest attendance yet, with 6,299 people joining the fun. (The previous record was in 2017, with an attendance of 6,217.) The convention space at the Hyatt Regency gives a good framework...

Minicon Proves There’s Life after Bloomington

Minicon 53, which was held March 30 through April 1, 2018, was especially notable in two ways. First, it was the 50th anniversary of the first convention (there were two in 1971 and two in 1974, which is why we’re on convention 53). And second, it saw the convention leave the DoubleTree Bloomington, otherwise known as the Radishtree for its past as a Radisson and a Sheraton, for the DoubleTree Park Place in St. Louis Park. The guests of...

Back to the 80s Minnesota Brings the Fun to the Ready Player One Premiere

Lions and tigers and DeLoreans, oh my! That was the scene at the Minnesota Zoo on Wednesday, March 28, for the IMAX premiere of the long-anticipated Ready Player One. The film, based on Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel, is a pop-culture wonderland filled with hundreds of movie, television, and video-game references from the ’80s and beyond, so it’s no wonder Back to the 80s Minnesota would plan a grand event for all us geeks. NerdinOut Con Is Putting Rochester on the Comic-Convention Map

Minnesota has a vibrant geek community, with plenty of comic-book conventions located in the Twin Cities area. The farther away from the Twin Cities you get, though, the fewer conventions there are. It’s a shame, because when I attended Winona State University I would regularly attend video-game clubs on campus and play board games at my favorite game shop. As a college student, I could barely afford gas so I often went months without attending a convention. Hopefully this will change...
