Contributor (Video Game Reviews)
Jovany “JoJo” Betancourt was born and raised in sunny South Florida, a place so hot and humid staying inside to play video games all day was an appropriate thing to do. The first console to steal his heart was the PlayStation 2, where adventure games like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy captured his imagination and showed the depth of emotion these worlds could provide. Since then, he has explored many genres of gaming and experienced beautifully crafted stories. Some that he dumped many hours into include Fallout’s desolate wasteland survival, Halo’s grandiose space shooter, Civilization’s epic nation builder, and Portal’s dark physics puzzler. To him, games are not only escapes from reality but journeys through new ones.
In real life, Jovany attended Florida International University, where he earned a BS in biological sciences and biochemistry. It was here that he got his start in writing through his university’s student newspaper. At the time, he felt that there was a significant lack in scientific discussion, so he wrote about the university’s strong research advancements, elevated his peers, and started the student radio’s first science talk show.
Jovany moved to the Twin Cities in 2020 to start his medical education at the University of Minnesota, where he is a part of the MD/PhD training program. He hopes that by embracing his geekiness he’ll meet new people, make friends, and come to call the Twin Cities home. And perhaps play a few games while doing it!
