DESCRIPTION:14th Cine Latino Film FestivalTheyDream is preceded by the short film Belong / Pertenecer by Sofía Padilla.Director Sofía Padilla (Belong / Pertenecer) AttendingABOUT THE FILMDirector William Caballero expands the themes of his acclaimed short Chilly and Milly (Cine Latino MSP 2024) in his debut feature TheyDream, an intimate journey through family, memory, grief, and forgiveness. Working alongside his mother, Caballero revisits the past through motion-capture technology and homemade animation, recreating family conversations and moments that might otherwise exist only in memory. His father, grandfather, grandmother, and beloved dog, Gustavo emerge through home movies, interviews, live action, personal illustrations, stop-motion, miniatures, puppets, and digital and performance-capture animation. This rich blend of techniques illuminates a quieter grief: the loss of a loved one, achievements never celebrated, words left unsaid, conversations too painful to revisit, and those we regret never having. TheyDream is a tender portrait of a son reckoning with his family’s past and the memories that shaped him. Visually inventive and deeply personal, the film explores universal questions of who we are, what we inherit, what we remember, and how we learn to let go—searching for understanding and a liberating way forward. TheyDream won the NEXT Special Jury Award for Creative Expression at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, and the Knight Documentary Achievement Award at the Miami International Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:14th Cine Latino Film FestivalThursday, October 8 at 7:30PMABOUT THE FILMOn a sunny morning in the city of Belo Horizonte, a crowded public bus makes its way downtown. As it crosses an overpass, the vehicle suddenly swerves, veers off the road, and crashes onto the avenue below. One passenger is left critically injured, while everyone else -- including Wesley, the driver -- is killed. The tragedy dominates television broadcasts and newspaper headlines across the country. Security cameras from both the bus and the roadway capture the moment of the crash, and after the footage is analyzed, speculation begins to spread that the driver may have acted intentionally, in an apparent suicide. Vicentina, a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher and Wesley’s mother, is devastated by the tragedy and uncertain of how to move forward. She decides to seek out the victims’ families and apologize. The road ahead proves difficult to navigate, and the answers Vicentina longs for are not always the ones she finds. BY MSP FILM SOCIETYCine Latino returns October 7–11 to The Main Cinema for five days of Spanish- and Portuguese-language films, special guests, fiestas, and more! DESCRIPTION:14th Cine Latino Film FestivalABOUT THE FILMGugu (Yuri Gomes), is a vibrant boy who brings color wherever he goes. A dreamer who wants to become a soccer player, he dances with joy, plays with makeup alongside his friends, and embraces life with fearless freedom. Raised by his grandmother Dilma (Teca Pereira), a woman who challenges expectations of aging, Gugu grows up in a world of affection and acceptance. But when her health begins to fail, he hides the truth to avoid being separated from her and sent to live with his father (Lázaro Ramos), whose absence has marked his childhood. The film captures the tenderness of childhood, the pain of loss, and the courage to exist authentically. As the freedom once celebrated around Gugu becomes threatened by prejudice and social limitations, he must defend his right to be himself. With delicate storytelling and emotional depth, Allan Deberton crafts a moving celebration of identity, family, and generational bonds. Led by Yuri Gomes’ remarkable performance, alongside Teca Pereira and Lázaro Ramos, Gugu’s World earned the Crystal Bear and International Jury’s Grand Prix at Berlin Film Festival’s Generation Kplus, followed by the Premio Maguey for Best Feature Film and acting awards for Gomes and Pereira at the Guadalajara Film Festival. BY MSP FILM SOCIETYCine Latino returns October 7–11 to The Main Cinema for five days of Spanish- and Portuguese-language films, special guests, fiestas, and more! Through the eyes of citizens, filmmakers and artists, the film reconstructs a fragmented history in a country without a national archive, celebrating creative expression as both resistance, renewal and a way to preserve memory. To accompany the film, Daher has created a website, doyouloveme.film, which serves as an annotated index of her sources.FILMMAKER BIOLana Daher is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist based in Beirut, Lebanon. The album contains a special recording by the Central University of Venezuela’s concert choir to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. DESCRIPTION:20th Arab Film FestivalSaturday, September 26 at 12:30 PMWe imagine time as a continuum—from past, through our present, to the future. Yet, ruptures continually disturb our real experiences of time. This selection of short films explores themes of rupture and separation through multiple lenses, manifesting in the various, connected forms of familial separation, cultural dislocation, and the physical rupture of forced displacement. Each film allows us to reflect on how these ruptures come to be, the anxieties they impose, and how we move forward, or how we remain, in the split paths they create.ABOUT THE FILMSVILLA 187Dir. Eiman Mirghani • Qatar, Sudan • 2025 • Arabic, English • 10 minOne day, Sudanese filmmaker Eiman Mirghani’s phone buzzed with a message: her father had lost his job, and the family had to pack up their life in the Doha house they’d called home for decades. The shock cracked open a flood of memories inside Villa 187, blurring nostalgia with the anxiety of an uncertain future. Through this rediscovery, questions emerge: What does belonging look like when you’re already displaced? How do you say goodbye to walls that raised you? And can a house hold the story of a family long after they’ve gone?A DRONE STORYDir. Laura Menassa • Lebanon • 2025 • Arabic, English • 10 minBeirut, November 2024. The weight of silence gives way to a constant buzzing within the city’s noise, growing until it becomes unbearable. Through fragments of daily life, the film unfolds as a quiet dialogue with an unseen force: one that watches and haunts everyday, revealing how war seeps into routine, thought, and body.BUFFER ZONEDir. Farrah Berrou • Lebanon • 2025 • Arabic, English • 18 minIn Buffer Zone, which is part documentary and part memoir, Farrah Berrou takes us to her ancestral border village of Kfarkila in southern Lebanon for the first time since October 8, 2023, the same day that Lebanon became a support-front to Gaza and Palestine in a post-October 7th world.MORNING CIRCLEDir. Basma al-Sharif • Canada, UAE, Germany • 2025 • Arabic, Armenian, German • 21 minBasma al-Sharif’s sensorial film traces the intimate and political contours of exile and colonial morality. Following a father and son through the quiet rhythms of early morning, the film gradually reveals the weight of separation and displacement, as well as the subtle violences of assimilation. Built as a choreography of three circles unfolding in the home, playground, and kindergarten, the film explores how domestic rituals, tender exchanges, and institutional routines carry the burden of history.WHISPERS OF A BURNING SCENTDir. Mo Harawe • Somalia, Austria, Germany • 2026 • Somali • 28 minOn the day of a decisive court hearing and an important wedding performance, a quiet wedding musician finds his private life exposed to public scrutiny. Accused of exploiting his marriage, he moves between courtroom, city streets, and stage, carrying the weight of judgment, loyalty, and unspoken guilt. Forced to make a restrained but irreversible decision, the film observes a man whose inner truth remains elusive, caught between devotion, dignity, and loss.VISITORDir. Lily Ekimian Ragheb, Ahmed T. Ragheb • USA • 2025 • English • 9 minThe titular visitor of our film wanders through the lonely streets of the post-industrial Rust Belt searching for family, separated from them by time, space, and circumstances—both human and supernatural. As she travels, she (and we) observe the effects of time and decay on our region, reminded of the waves of immigrant populations that once built it. https://mspfilm.org/show/stories-of-rupture-shorts/

Created by artists of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art, the project reclaims a centuries old form to highlight a special, public place that’s important today. It carries on a tradition of botanical illustration that brings together art and science to create accurate, yet expressive, depictions of living plants. This all-ages exhibition centers on the 111 watercolors of the florilegium. It includes hands-on activities, such as a collaborative garden mural and an opportunity to learn to draw plants, as well as a video projection and collections highlights, including specimens collected by Eloise Butler herself for the University of Minnesota Herbarium. DESCRIPTION:20th Arab Film FestivalFriday, September 25 at 9:00 PMABOUT THE FILMHaroun is an old bachelor who has been living in Oran for several years. A retired civil servant, he leads a reclusive life until, in a bar, he meets Kamel, a journalist to whom he tells an incredible story dating back to the summer of 1942. He claims to be the brother of the Arab killed in one of the most famous novels of the 20th century, Albert Camus’s The Stranger. An Arab whose erased name was Moussa. Through this revelation, the story challenges long-standing narratives and gives voice to what was once erased. Freely adapted from the novel The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud.FILMMAKER BIOMalek Bensmaïl is an Algerian filmmaker whose work powerfully explores the intersections of memory, history, and politics. Trained in cinema in Paris and Saint Petersburg, he has been developing since the 1990s a demanding body of work, grounded in reality yet open to the world. His films, Aliénations, China Is Still Far Away, Checks and Balances, and The Battle of Algiers, a Film Within History—offer a lucid and sensitive portrait of contemporary Algeria, caught between its colonial legacy and democratic aspirations.Celebrated at numerous international festivals, Bensmaïl continues with The Arab his exploration of identities and imaginaries across the Mediterranean. Through this new film, he questions the image of the Arab in a world in crisis, remaining true to his commitment to a cinema that is political, poetic, and deeply human.PRESENTED BY MIZNAMizna is a critical platform for contemporary literature, film, art, and cultural production centering the work of Arab and Southwest Asian and North African artists. DESCRIPTION:20th Arab Film FestivalFriday, September 25 at 7:00 PMMizna presents a retrospective of Hadi Moussally’s short films, with the filmmaker in attendance. Hadi combines a multifaceted filmmaking approach with a very clear discourse on what it is to be gay and Arab, both in his country of origin and in his adopted countries. Through her drag alter ego Salma Zahore, she takes us to a colorful world and a hilarious countryside—offering the LGBTIQ+ community in the SWANA region one of those valuable spaces for freedom and expression—without losing sight of the adverse social and legal environment with which they have to coexist.Featuring alter-ego Salma Zahore, an ongoing project and persona of Hadi Moussally, this collection of shorts includes Les Fleure du Mâle, Abaya Rocks, and Salma à la plage, all filmed while traveling to various countries. The majority of these captivating and colorful moments are around a minute and without dialogue, reminiscent of music video culture, and in deep drag tradition.Visiting filmmakers: Hadi Moussally, Olivier PagnyABOUT THE FILMSSHAMEDir. Hadi Moussally, Olivier Pagny • Lebanon • 2025 • Arabic • 5 minIn the 19th century, in the Shaam region, Salma Zahore, along with her parents and neighbors, participated in a photoshoot using a long exposure technique. At the end of it, Salma decided to take off her coat, revealing her body. Unaware of the chaos this gesture could cause within her circle, she did not know it could lead to shame.Through this artistic exploration, the film prompts viewers to reconsider their understanding of shame, societal expectations, and the evolving nature of cultural identities. It challenges the notion of shame as a tool for social control while celebrating individuality and the diverse expressions of human identity.BELLYDANCE VOGUEDir. Hadi Moussally • France, Spain, Lebanon • 2020 • Arabic • 5 minAlone on his birthday during lockdown on April 3, 2020, Hadi celebrates his birthday alone as if it were his last. The film is a blend of archival home footage from the ’80s and ’90s with a VHS aesthetic, transforming isolation into a defiant act of joy.SPACE WOMANDir. Hadi Moussally • Lebanon • 2021 • Arabic • 19 minTripoli, North Lebanon. At sixty-four, Maha has just taken her retirement from teaching. This new life puts her in the face of her loneliness as a divorced woman whose children have left their home to live abroad for years now. The sole company of her faithful neighbors is no longer enough for Maha to fight the terrible emptiness and boredom she now feels. But had she not always dreamed of being an astronaut? And what if she lets herself drift to this promise of escape?SULTANA’S REIGNDir. Hadi Moussally • Lebanon • 2023 • English, French, Arabic • 10 minSultana of New York is a Palestinian drag queen, performer, and artist. Sultana’s Reign opens with a conversation with Sultana, as she is being painted by Jordanian artist, RIDIKKULUZ. Reflecting on her journey from Jordan, to Egypt, to Lebanon, to New York, Sultana tells of the challenges of performing drag in conservative societies, her nostalgia for the glory days and the glamour of Egyptian cinema icons, and her struggle to prove her existence and her self-expression as a performer and artist. She also shares her love of celebration and her everlasting commitment to be true to herself.SALMA!Dir. Mary Sherif Kamal Hanna • Canada • 2024 • Arabic • 7 minA portrait of photographer, film director, and performer Hadi Moussally and his famous drag alter ego, Salma Zahore. In 2022, Salma burst onto the performance scene, captivating audiences at venues like Razzmatazz Club in Barcelona, La Bellevilloise in Paris, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Neither male nor female, neither religious nor atheist, her performances challenge inherited ideas of gender, faith, and power, while unapologetically affirming her Lebanese, Arab, and queer identity.LES FLEURS DU MÂLEDir. Hadi Moussally • France • 2023 • French • 4 minInspired by Baudelaire’s censored words, this Super 8 portrait traces Salma, a creature punished for who she is, as she confronts the authority of her own creation and begs for the right to exist.ABAYA ROCKSDir. Hadi Moussally • France, Lebanon • 2023 • No dialogue • 1 minIn the streets of Paris, Salma, a queer Arab performer, collaborated with Mohsen Othman, an esteemed Egyptian photographer and art director based in Paris, for an editorial photoshoot that centered around the theme of the abaya. Notably, the abaya isn’t a religious garment but a cultural one, underlining a rich tapestry of traditions and personal expression. Against the ongoing debate in France over banning religious symbols in public schools, this photoshoot assumed a significant and thought-provoking stance.ABJAD HAWAZDir. Hadi Moussally • Spain, Lebanon • 2023 • Arabic • 5 minAbjad ?awaz takes its name from the ancient ordering of the Arabic alphabet. Through the body of Salma Zahore, each letter is danced and embodied in the ruins of Barcelona. Blending fashion, music, poetry, and performance, the film reclaims a language often feared and misunderstood, turning it into a celebration of identity, resilience, and artistic freedom.SALMA À LA PLAGEDir. Hadi Moussally • Spain, Lebanon • 2025 • No dialogue • 1 minA short film about self-discovery and reflection, guided by the artistic vision of Hadi Moussally and set on a peaceful beach of Sitges. Featuring Salma Zahore, the film combines fashion and introspective storytelling, to create a unique and evocative experience.SALMA IN LA COSTA BRAVADir. Hadi Moussally • Spain, Lebanon • 2025 • No dialogue • 2 minA new video collaboration between Salma Zahore and Pride of Costa Brava, created to promote the Pride in Lloret de Mar. Directed by Hadi Moussally, the film is a tribute to self-expression, inclusivity, and the charm of the Costa Brava region. Jihan K • USA, Libya • 2025 • English, Arabic, French • 88 minWhen director Jihan was six years old, her father, Mansur Rashid Kikhia, flew to Cairo and never returned. For many, Kikhia was a rising star who could have been the next leader of Libya, however, in 1993 he disappeared from his hotel in Egypt.Jihan’s mother, Baha Al Omary, a strong-willed Syrian-American artist, began searching for him, launching the family into an international political maze. Her mission to find justice brought her to the Libyan desert in the middle of the night, face to face with Qaddafi to negotiate her husband’s release. My Father and Qaddafi takes the audience on a raw and reflective journey as Jihan pieces together memories of a father she barely remembers while discovering the troubled history and politics of Libya. Her journey starts from fading personal memories and leads to encounters with family members, her father’s peers, and historical archival footage.FILMMAKER BIOJihan K was born in exile and raised in Paris while her father, a Libyan human rights lawyer, was the peaceful opposition leader to Qaddafi’s regime. After her father disappeared from Cairo, her family lived between the United States and France, while her mother, a Syrian artist, fought for justice in an international campaign. Jihan received her BA in international and comparative politics with a concentration in human rights, philosophy, and international law and her MA in art education and storytelling.ATTEMPTING TO REMEMBER MY FATHER'S FACEDir. Tariq Abdalla • Egypt • 2025 • Arabic • 15 minWhile my father’s face is fading from my memory, I find a videotape that might have the only footage of him. I attempt to digitize the video while revisiting childhood memories and my relationship with my mother. By discovering that my parents are “aliens” and their history is not what I imagined, the film offers a liberatory lesson: We are not beholden to the ghosts of our lineage.FILMMAKER BIOSTariq Abdalla is a film director, editor, and programmer whose films have screened internationally, earning awards and grant recognition at multiple festivals including Tripoli Film Festival, Gabes Cinema Fen, and Manassat Film Festival. He has experience in film programming, education, and coordination including roles with El-Gouna Film Festival ESLSCA University and El-Nahda Jesuit Cairo.PRESENTED BY MIZNAMizna is a critical platform for contemporary literature, film, art, and cultural production centering the work of Arab and Southwest Asian and North African artists. DESCRIPTION:20th Arab Film FestivalFriday, September 25 at 1:00 PMABOUT THE FILMActivist, teacher, and poet Alex Odeh was a leading voice in his community, advocating in the media for peace and justice through dialogue and respect for all people. In October 1985, he was assassinated by a tripwire bomb placed in his office. Using archival footage and contemporary investigation, we are taken back to the time of Odeh’s murder and trace the extremist forces that may have been behind his death and the disturbing ramifications that remain today.FILMMAKER BIOWilliam Lafi Youmans is Associate Professor in Residence at Northwestern University in Qatar. He codirected and coproduced Who Killed Alex Odeh?, a documentary film that premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and Berlinale. DESCRIPTION:14th Cine Latino Film Festival • Closing Night FilmSunday, October 11 at 7:30 PMClosing Party precedes the film starting at 5:30 PM.ABOUT THE FILMA pair of petty thieves, Nancy (Bruna Marquezine) and Sid (Vladimir Brichta), specialize in robbing the homes of elderly victims, but their latest targets prove far more dangerous—and resourceful—than expected. Marta (powerhouse Fernanda Montenegro) and Rodolfo (Ary Fontoura) may look like harmless retirees, but they are anything but. After unjustly losing money, they intend to reclaim, the veteran thieves devise an audacious plan to rob a bank—and need younger legs and a petite body to pull it off. Their unlikely recruits are Nancy and Sid, who soon discover that taking advantage of their new partners may be easier said than done. Adding to the chaos is investigator Oswaldo Aranha (Lázaro Ramos), a tenacious police chief nearing retirement, determined to unravel the scheme. As the thieves try to stay one step ahead of the law—and each other—the heist becomes a battle of cunning, deception, and generational rivalry. Directed by Cláudio Torres, the film gets the best out of its stellar cast, delivering a warm, witty, and refreshing comedy that breaks Marta and Rodolfo’s characters out of the “harmless grandpa” mold, restoring their desire, pride, and tactical brilliance. The mix of playful generational clashes and unexpected twists creates an entertaining, personality-driven caper—with enough dramatic tension to make this unlikely crew worth rooting for. Winner of Best Comedy Feature at the 25th Grande Otelo Awards, Brazil’s equivalent of the Oscars. BY MSP FILM SOCIETYCine Latino returns October 7–11 to The Main Cinema for five days of Spanish- and Portuguese-language films, special guests, fiestas, and more!
