Minnesota Goth Events and Gatherings for September 2019

Welcome back to Minnesota Dark Scene, your guide to goth events and gatherings, for September 2019. There is quite a bit of fun and frivolity this month as we head into the season of fall and all things spooky.

Special Events

Communion Closing Party 2019

What: Club Night
When: Sunday, September 1, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: The Pourhouse (Minneapolis)

The end of summer brings the end of the weekly Communion DJ parties. Celebrate the end with a strong DJ lineup, including Truncate from Los Angeles, Hiroko Yamamura from Chicago, and tons of local DJs like Centrific, Hyperkarma, Jobot, Grant Mayland, and Mr BlaQ. This party takes over three rooms and each room is jam-packed full of tunes. This event is $25 at the door and 21+.

God Module

What: Concert
When: Tuesday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Red Sea Restaurant and Bar (Minneapolis)

God Module is in town with their Unsound World Tour in support of their new album The Unsound. They are a consistently fun act to see live and are touring with Finite Automata from Atlanta, Georgia. They are also playing with local legends Absynthe of Faith. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door and 21+.

Crypticon

What: Convention
When: Friday, September 6–Sunday, September 8
Where: Hilton MSP Airport Mall of America (Bloomington, MN)

Crypticon is the place for all things horror and spooky and has been for 14 years. It’s a convention designed to delight those who revel in the darkness, with tons of vendors, cosplay opportunities, parties, and awesome celebrity encounters. Tickets range in price from $17-$154 depending on when you want to go and what you want to get out of it. The event is open to all ages, but because it is a horror convention parents should consider before taking young children.

Rapture MN

What: Club Night
When: Friday, September 6, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Rapture MN is a new monthly night of hard dance and EDM as well as your favorite acts from Dragons Fire Theater. This event features DJ Squiggles and MC Obliquity, DJ BrandenFace, and DJs DV8 and Noise. There will be several fun acts from Dragons Fire Theater as well as vending from Monkey Bunny Inc. Cover is $10 in advance or $15 at the door and 21+.

Dark Energy Presents: Black Asteroid

What: Concert
When: Saturday, September 7, at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Loring Bar and Restaurant (Minneapolis)

Black Asteroid is a performer from New York City who was once an engineer for Prince and half of the outfit MOTOR. Created by Bryan Black, Black Asteroid is known for his explosive and energetic DJ sets and wide-ranging collaborations. Resident DJs for the night will be Mr BlaQ and Hyperkarma. This event is $10 in advance and $12 at the door and 18+.

Adam Ant: Friend or Foe

What: Concert
When: Sunday, September 8, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Pantages Theatre (Minneapolis)

Favorite of the ’80s glam-punk pop stars Adam Ant comes to Minneapolis to play his debut solo album Friend or Foe in its entirety as well as his other chart-topping hits. This Grammy Award–winning artist is touring with Hollywood rock band Glam Skanks, which offers up an “anything goes” style of rock.  Tickets range from $53 to $163, and the event is open to all ages.

Massive Attack

What: Concert
When: Tuesday, September 10, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Palace Theatre (Minneapolis)

Massive Attack comes to town to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album Mezzanine. This trip-hop group has been a favorite of dance scenes since 1991, and Mezzanine was one of their most popular albums. With tracks like “Angel,” “Teardrop,” and “Inertia Creeps” invading the social consciousness, the opportunity to see these tracks played live is not one to miss. This event is sold out, but tickets may still be available on the third-party market and through social media.

The Hu – The Gereg Tour

What: Concert
When: Wednesday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Fine Line (Minneapolis)

The Hu is a band from Mongolia that mixes heavy metal with traditional instruments and throat singing. Their almost effortless blending of new and traditional makes them a standout in the metal scene and provides a sound that is heard nowhere else. This is their first tour celebrating the upcoming release of their debut album The Gereg after becoming viral video stars almost overnight. Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door and 18+.

Dragons Lair Performing Arts Presents: Hedonistic Fridays

What: Club Night
When: Friday, September 13, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: The Saloon (Minneapolis)

The creators of the Forbidden Bazaar are ramping things up in 2019 with their new night, Boys Night Out, at the Saloon. The men of Dragons Lair come together for a night of fire performances, aerial acrobatics, boylesque, stilts, contortion, pole dancing, go-go dancing, and shibari suspensions. Head down and give them some (consenting) love.

Potterheads Unite at Ground Zero

What: Club Night
When: Friday, September 13, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Come on down to Ground Zero for a night of eminently danceable beats and a love of all things Harry Potter. Music by DJ Overdrive (a treat!) and crew. Entry is $5 with costume or $10 without and 21+.  Reminder that Ground Zero is a cash-only bar.

The Midnight

What: Concert
When: Monday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue (Minneapolis)

The Midnight is a true-type synthpop band that seems straight out of the ’80s. Their music is ethereal and wonderful, sad and danceable. Until September 8 you can register to win tickets through Twin Cities Geek to see this delightfully retro band. They are joined on the tour by Flamingosis. Tickets are $20 in advance or $23 at the door and 18+.

GothiCoffee

What: Gathering
When: Wednesday, September 18, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Cafe Meow (Minneapolis)

GothiCoffee is a monthly roving gathering that gives darksiders the opportunity to get together over some coffee and chat about all manner of things. It’s a casual event, open to all ages, and free, though buying a drink at the coffeehouse of the month is encouraged. This month’s venue is Minneapolis’s first cat café.

Gothess Presents: Los Espookys (Noche de Darkwave)

What: Club Night
When: Thursday, September 19, at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Honey (Minneapolis)

This month the crew of Gothess are inspired by the HBO TV show Los Espookys. Join DJs Miss Q along with a guest DJ as they put on a fabulous night celebrating all things Gothess. This event is 21+ and $5, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting RAICES and the ACLU of Minnesota.

Dark Energy Presents: Kælan Mikla

What: Concert
When: Friday, September 20, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Part Wolf (Minneapolis)

Kælan Mikla is a three-piece punk/no-wave band from Iceland that is known for their dark and melancholy sounds, with heavy bass and drums along with melodic synth. They will be joined by Executive and Observant with local DJs DIE/ASPORA and Grant Mayland. Tickets are $10 in advance, and the event is 21+.

The Forbidden Bazaar Presents: Pirate Booty

What: Club Night
When: Friday, September 20, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

The Forbidden Bazaar brings you a pirate–themed event. Dress to the theme and enjoy the flow-friendly dance floor. DJs for the evening include DJ Noise and DV8. The usual entertainments will be on offer, including aerial acrobatics, fire magic, burlesque, suspension, a photo booth, and more. This event is 21+, and cover is $10 with a costume or $15 without.

TC Apocalypse

What: Concert
When: Saturday, September 21, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Palmer’s Bar (Minneapolis)

A small dark gathering of local bands and Palmer’s to bring a little delight to your night, starting off with Observant, followed by Echo Signal, Temple Minneapolis, and Apocalypse Theatre on the outside stage. Then they move indoors for Dylan Emelianoff and SAI U DROM as well as Darlene Dreamer. Tickets are $7 and 21+.

Babymetal

What: Concert
When: Saturday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Myth Nightclub (Maplewood)

Sometimes the dark can be cute. In this case, the worldwide sensation kawaii metal band Babymetal from Japan is in town to make you headbang with anime eyes. They are supported by Avatar on this tour, and tickets range from $37.50 to $300. The concert is all ages.

Kinky Desires Fantasy Fetish Ball

What: Club Night
When: Saturday, September 21, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Rouge at the Lounge (Minneapolis)

The creators of Rubber Ball, Domina USA, are now hosting a monthly fetish night. This is their kickoff, and they are doing it in style with a fetish ball. Come dressed to impress in your best fetish wear or evening attire and be ready to have a great time. With a selection of great Mistresses and Masters to delight you throughout the evening, they should be sure to create a great event. Tickets are $12 in advance or $17 at the door, and the event is 21+.

Extreme Noise 25th Anniversary Celebration

What: Concert
When: Sunday, September 29, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: James Ballentine Uptown VFW (Minneapolis)

Help Extreme Noise Records celebrate their 25th anniversary with an all-day extravaganza of music. All-ages shows during the day include Mentira, Color TV, Subversive Rite, and Uranium Club. In the evening it goes 21+ with Scrunchies, Mock Execution, Negative Scanner, and False. Ticket cost is TBD and the event is all ages during the day and 21+ in the evening.

Weekly Events

Transmission with DJ Jake Rudh

What: Club Night
When: Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown VFW (Minneapolis)

For 17 years, DJ Jake Rudh has been bringing the best of ’80s new wave and synthpop to the clubs every Wednesday (and more recently to the airwaves on the Current every Thursday). Transmission is an amazing night of music, videos, dancing, and ’80s nostalgia for all fans, and there are people who have met and gotten married thanks to this unparalleled night of music. Come out and see what it’s all about; you won’t regret it. This event is 21+ and free!

Across the Board with DJ SLT

When: Fridays from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ SLT has been bringing his wide-ranging musical interests to KFAI for over 10 years. His show features anything and everything from ’70s glam rock to EBM, industrial, pop, and all the David Bowie you never knew existed. DJ SLT frequently has theme nights, guest hosts, collaborations, and collectors’ corners to make a varied and greatly interesting radio show worth staying awake for. He also plays his own original works under the name Kradis.

She’s In Control: Gothic Radio Hour

What: Radio Show
When: Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m.
Where: 90.3 FM Minneapolis/106.7 FM St. Paul or online at KFAI Community Radio

DJ Mercury brings you the musical and pop-culture history of the goth and alternative scene in her two-hour show on KFAI. With a blend of interviews, history, and music to tie it all together, her show is one to catch.

Bondage A-Go-Go

What: Club Night
When: Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub (Minneapolis)

Ground Zero has been the goth community’s mainstay for 24 years. Today, it is the best place to grab a drink and dance to the best music the goth world has to offer (and some it hasn’t). With three rotating DJs keeping the music fresh and interesting, it sets the scene for what’s going on in the back—where the in-house dominatrixes keep your blood pumping with safe and consensual scenes you can either watch or participate in (after signing up, staying sober until your time, and tipping the mistress). No photos, 21+, $7 cover, cash-only bar. Come casual or dress to impress.
