Comics I’m Picking Up the Week of November 13, 2019

Here are the books I’m looking forward to seeing at my local comic store the week of November 13, 2019. I’m back from a month away in New Zealand and ready to hit the store(s) again to find some books.

Why I’m Excited: Although I never got into his work for Valiant, I’ve loved all of his independent projects (Black Badge, Ether, and especially MIND MGMT). Having just been traveling in a fantasy world myself I appreciate the commentary that can be possible when examining the “real” world with fresh eyes. I know that New Zealand was only a filling for Middle-earth, I felt that it had real magic; but I began to miss my dog so I had to return.

Why I’m Excited: For a while I had fallen into a space opera rut, reading one Banks Culture novel after another (I read Matter and the later two and am now bouncing through the others without sequence—currently on Consider Phoebus). Then I was recommended the Broken Earth trilogy, and what a great new perspective. I’m excited to see how N. K. Jemisin does in a new medium and curious to hear how DC asked if she’d be willing to write something for them. Pairing her with Jamal Campbell is a great choice.

Why I’m Excited: With the rise of the creative duo in recent media (James S. A. Corey, the Duffer Brothers, and Michael Stanley of the Detective Kubu mystery novels) one wonders how well they would function on their own. Here Lonnie Nadler is without his frequent collaborator Zac Thompson—at least officially. If this is just a fraction of their earlier works, The Dregs and Her Infernal Descent, it will be dollars well spent.

Also out this week is Garth Ennis’s return to the Marvel character he made famous by having him kill every other Marvel character almost 25 years ago.
