Limited-Edition Rose Quartz 20-Sided Dice Only Give Critical Outcomes

Back in June 2019, Hyde Goltz, also known as Gerbil, was told by their doctor that there was a very likely chance they had cancer. Unfortunately Gerbil couldn’t see an oncologist to find out for sure until late August. Anticipating major medical bills, Gerbil commissioned 100 special limited-edition dice as a way the local geek community could help them fundraise, not to mention remember them should the worst happen. The dice are meant to represent Gerbil’s usual ridiculous luck—both good and bad—in a uniquely geeky way.

Made from real rose quartz as a nod to one of Gerbil’s favorite TV shows, Steven Universe, the “Gerbil Dice” have 20 sides but only two possible outcomes: critical success or critical failure. Because why flip a coin when you can roll a D20?

In August 2019, Gerbil got their the cancer results back and found out the growths their doctor had detected in June were benign. But instead of letting the Gerbil Dice project go, Gerbil decided to turn it into a fundraiser for Family Tree Clinic, which had provided them free therapy and complete respect during those long, unsure summer months.

Family Tree Clinic has been providing health services to transgender, nonbinary, queer, and questioning individuals on a sliding-fee scale for many years and was one of the first clinics in the Twin Cities to make hormone replacement therapy accessible to people without insurance.
