Pillsbury United Communities Is Serving Minnesotans during COVID-19, and You Can Help
Minnesotans are stepping up and making a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I want to make sure people know about all the organizations out there doing great work and helping during this crisis and beyond. I’m profiling a different nonprofit each day to share their information and their story.
Today’s entry is Pillsbury United Communities (PUC), led by my good friend Adair Mosley, which has a deep and rich history reflecting the more than 140 years it has been serving the community. Beginning in 1879 as the Bethel Mission, it has roots connected to many of the earliest settlement houses in Minneapolis, and over the years, these centers have merged together to build a stronger organization. The Bethel Mission offered the city’s first free kindergarten and the first day nursery for the children of working mothers. Following suit, other settlement houses launched and offered similar services. In 1897, Unity House was founded; in 1906, the Bethel Settlement established Pillsbury House; and in 1908, Wells Memorial House opened. Over the years, these organizations began to come together, ultimately leading to the creation of Pillsbury United Neighborhood Services, later to become Pillsbury United Communities.
PUC offers a wide variety of programming and services in the areas of family stabilization, community health, food accessibility, day training for adults with disabilities, support for immigrant women, emergency childcare, tax assistance, truancy prevention, senior services, and much, much more.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, PUC has closed its locations to all nonessential activities but continues to meet the most urgent needs of the communities it serves. It is distributing pantry bags at its food shelves and takeout meals at its community cafés. Its North Market also continues to operate, within COVID-19 safety measures, providing much needed grocery services to North Minneapolis.
