Magic: The Gathering Is Looking for BIPOC Writers
The publisher of Magic: The Gathering, Wizards of the Coast, came under fire recently for racist artwork in some of the game’s older cards and for having shown a historical preference for hiring white staff. As part of an effort to rectify this, Wizards is now seeking freelance writers among BIPOC communities to contribute to the property’s story line. The creators of Magic state they believe in a culture of inclusivity, and the more people of diverse backgrounds feel welcomed by the game and able to see something of themselves in it, the more the game’s community can continue to grow and thrive. As a result, the setting consistently features a diverse cast of characters. But in order to create and portray these characters and the races and cultures they belong to in a way that is authentic to their real-world counterparts, people who have those real-world experiences must necessarily have direct input.
