Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore, a Minneapolis Icon, Turns 50

“Uncle Hugo’s opened for business on March 2, 1974, which makes this coming Saturday our 50th anniversary,” owner Don Blyly writes in his latest business update.
From March 1 through March 10, 2024, the famed Minneapolis bookstore is marking that milestone with 10% off all in-person purchases, or 20% with an Uncle Hugo’s discount card. Spend $200 and you’ll also get a free 50th anniversary mug while supply lasts.
Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore and Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore had been operating as a joint business on Chicago Avenue near Lake Street for decades when arson destroyed their building in 2020. After two years in limbo as a mail-only business, the Uncles reopened just east of their old location at 2716 East 31st Street in August 2022—just around the corner from fellow Twin Cities indie Moon Palace Books. Uncle Hugo’s bills itself as the oldest independent science fiction bookstore in the country.
