Camp Snoopy, a New Peanuts Animated Series, Is Now Streaming on Apple TV+

On June 14, Apple TV+ released a new original Peanuts animated series, Camp Snoopy. It is not about an amusement park situated in the middle of a giant shopping mall, as us Minnesotans might think, but it’s still based on the characters and stories created by local hero Charles M. Schulz.

The show starts with Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts discovering that their troop is in danger of disbanding. Using the Beagle Scout Manual as their guide, they set out to immerse themselves in the Great Outdoors to earn their badges and save their troop. Meanwhile, Charlie Brown and friends enjoy their summer at Camp Spring Lake, crossing paths with Snoopy as they experience hiking, swimming, sitting around campfires, and everything else that summer camp and the outdoors has to offer.

Each episode consists of two main segments, separated by a “Can YOU Be a Beagle Scout?” short with Snoopy and the scouts demonstrating one of the basic principles of Beagle Scouting. (It doesn’t always go well.) Although Camp Snoopy continues the style of the previous Apple TV+ Peanuts cartoon, The Snoopy Show, in having more detailed backgrounds than older Peanuts media, the line work here is a bit rougher—similar to how Schulz drew the comic strip in the ’90s This, along with the classic character designs and the light jazzy soundtrack, give Camp Snoopy a very Peanuts feel. It probably helps that Craig Schulz, son of the creator, is an executive producer.

The stories seem to be more inspired by Schulz’s work rather than directly adapted, but it works well. And at the end of the credits for each episode there is a title card dedication to Charles M. Schulz: “Thank you, Sparky. Always in our hearts.”
