Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 1, to Sunday, July 7.

In-Person Events

A Wrinkle in Time

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Theater in the Round

Come on down and see the theatrical adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at a special community showing that allows people to pay what they can for the show. This is a classical fantastical story brought to the stage. See the event link for other showings of the production.

Bloomington Summer Fete

What: Community, Music
When: Wednesday, July 3, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Normandale Lake Bandshell

Enjoy an evening of summer fun leading up to the July 4 holiday at Normandale Lake Park. There will be two stages—one focused on kids, and the other focused on a more general audience. Plus, expect to find all kinds of fun family activities like balloon animals, caricature artists, and more.

CONvergence 2024: Everyone’s Invited

What: Convention
When: Thursday, July 4, through Sunday, July 7
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

CONvergence is an annual four-day convention for fans of sci fi and fantasy of all kinds. The event has a different theme every year, and this year’s theme is “Everyone’s Invited,” to celebrate diversity in our inspirations, our creative communities, and our fandoms. Special guests include Thom Adcox-Hernandez, Brigitte Bako, Keith David, Zehra Faza, Carlos Hernandez, Susanna Malak, Miss Shannan Paul, and Greg Weisman. Come for panels, people watching, room parties, or more. For many local geeks, CONvergence is a yearly place to reconnect with their extended family of geekdom, and this new location brings new opportunities to connect. Music in the Parks: DJ Angel Beloved

What: Music, Community, Family
When: Thursday, July 4, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Water Works at Mill Ruins Park

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. This week features DJ Angel Beloved with an electrifying mix of tunes. Check out the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Music in the Parks performances.

D&D One-Shot Night

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, July 4, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

This beginner-friendly event is a great way to experience Dungeons & Dragons in a bite-size format. This will be a self-contained session of the game. Tickets are $5 per session.

Scream It Off Screen

What: Movies
When: Friday, July 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Scream It Off Screen is a short-film contest with an audience interaction element! Come together with other film nerds in one of the Twin Cities greatest revival theaters. Audiences will cry out “Gong!” or “Let it play!” in order to determine which films will be shown in full. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: Shrek

What: Movies, Community
When: Friday, July 5, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Dickman Park

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Shrek, the fairy tale adventure film where an ogre leaves the comfort of his swamp behind. Gothess Presents Gotham⏤A Night of Misfits

What: Nightlife, Music
When: Friday, July 5, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: The Turf Club

Gothess, a local dance night focused on darker vibes and goth culture, will be hosting Gotham—A Night of Misfits at the Turf Club. This is a great chance to hear DJ sets from DJ Q, PRSPHNE, and Dazzle, while dancing the night away. Tickets are $15.

Dolly Parton Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Saturday, July 6, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week celebrates Dolly Parton with colorful performances of her iconic songs. Featured performers include Sasha Cassadine (host),Onya, Julia Starr, and Buttercream. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $18 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Greenharbor LARP Amtgard Outdoor Park Day

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, July 6, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: River Park (Brooklyn Park)

Play games and face off in battle with other live-action roleplay (LARP) enthusiasts. This free event is hosted by Greenharbor LARP, a local chapter of the global medieval-fantasy combat LARP organization Amtgard. New players are encouraged and all equipment is provided for free.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 7, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Break the Bubble at Dual Citizen Brewing

What: Community, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, July 7, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Dual Citizen Brewing

Break out of those icy Minnesotan social bubbles with a fun night of friend-making. This is not speed-dating or professional networking, but instead a place to meet new people, and forge new friend groups. This event is open to all over the age of 21.

Summer Games Done Quick 2024

What: Gaming, Community
When: Now through Saturday, July 6
Where: Virtual via Twitch

Support Doctors Without Borders while watching some of the best speedrunners around at Summer Games Done Quick. This annual video-game marathon has raised over $45 million for charity to date. There will be a packed schedule of video-game speedruns, including retro classics, modern hits, and indie darlings. Registration for the in-person event has closed, but all of the action will be streamed live on their Twitch channel.

Virtual Pub Quiz Trivia Night

When: Monday, July 1, at 8:00 p.m.

Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

Free Virtual Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, July 2, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class streamed from the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5. See the page for more info, as well as additional in-person yoga events.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–Visions of Cuba: A Photographic Tale

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, July 2, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, learn about Cuba through photography. General-admission tickets are $30, and a discount is available for members. Weird & Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, July 3, at 7:00 p.m.

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, July 4, and Sunday, July 7; at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Discord

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Thursday and Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Hop on voice or video and chat while you create art, then share your finished pieces on the #art-club channel! This event is open to all. You can join by visiting twincitiesgeek.com/discord.
