“Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective” Is a Marvelous Mashup of Medicine and Mystery

In this day and age, few if any professionals deserve more respect than medical practitioners of all kinds. Whether they’re family doctors, school nurses, emergency medical technicians, neurosurgeons, or psychologists, the medical community has been the backbone of humanity ever since Hippocrates laid down the groundwork for the practices that would be used by doctors all over the world centuries later.

What if, though, your doctor were also a detective? It’s not hard to imagine after watching Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective! Ameku M.D. premiered in January 2025 from Project No.9, with 12 episodes released.

Our story centers around the Department of Investigative Pathology at Tenikai General Hospital and its eccentric director, Dr. Takao Ameku. Her main job is to diagnose patients who could not be given an official diagnosis by other hospitals. That would be worth watching alone if she never did anything else, but because of her love of solving mysteries, Dr. Ameku has a tendency to insert herself into police investigations and give her professional opinion on the matter—whether they like it or not. Yet all of these cases would go cold if not for her assistance, so it’s in the police’s best interest to at least fill her in on the situation.

From the very beginning, Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective pulls us in with its seamless marriage of medicine and mystery. Many cases pop up, both in and out of the hospital, that require much more digging than the average office visit. Several of them present themselves as supernatural in nature, only to be given a logical and scientific explanation by the time the credits roll. It’s not only thrilling and fascinating, but also quite educational to watch, and would be enjoyable for those who tend to favor the left hemisphere of their brains.

I would say that the main draw of the show, though, is the leading lady herself, Dr. Ameku. Not since Saiki K. in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. have I seen such a neurodivergent-coded protagonist work so well in an anime. She’s brilliant, driven, and passionate about her job. She also has no qualms with overstepping her boundaries as a doctor and is very blunt to the point of being rude. She’s the type of person who always goes through with something once she’s set her mind to it and damn the consequences, which makes her not only incredibly entertaining but also relatable. It’s true that we don’t know anything about Dr. Ameku’s life before becoming a physician. To be honest, though, I’m not sure if I want to know, because I think that she’s a complete and interesting character all on her own.
