Neighborhood House’s Food Markets Are Serving Minnesota during the Pandemic, and You Can Help

Minnesotans are stepping up and making a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I want to make sure people know about all the organizations out there doing great work and helping during this crisis and beyond. I’m profiling a different nonprofit each day to share their information and their story.

Today’s entry is Neighborhood House, which is led by my good friend Nancy Brady and, like other organizations I’ve profiled, comes out of the settlement-house movement. A fixture in St. Paul’s West Side since 1897, it has welcomed thousands of refugees and immigrants since its beginnings with Eastern European Jewish families, supporting families in times of transition or need from more than 50 cultural and ethnic populations.

Today, Neighborhood House serves more than 15,000 people at six locations throughout St. Paul and offers services in the areas of basic needs and lifelong learning, including early-childhood and adult education, youth leadership programs, literacy, and six family centers to help people with food support and housing.

Its food markets remain open during Minnesota stay-in-place order and are also providing prepackaged emergency bags for curbside pickup. For those who can’t visit the food market in person, Neighborhood House is providing delivery of emergency bags within 24 to 48 hours. The organization also continues to provide crisis support for families facing situations that put them at risk for homelessness.
