Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 24, to Sunday, March 2.

Stolen Focus

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 2
Where: Phoenix Theater

After losing her social media job and starting as a theater lobby manager, Maran finds herself continually haunted by internet distractions and “digital disruptors.” When she reads a book that reveals the modern-age culprits stealing focus from people, she is determined to give it all up and convince her fractured family to join her. Tickets are $30.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 23
Where: Guthrie Theater

The beloved Shakespearean classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream makes its return to the Guthrie stage. This play of mischief and love is the playwright’s most popular work and has enchanted countless audiences with its intertwining tales unfolding when the mortal and magical worlds meet during the Summer Solstice. Tickets are $32 to $92. Check out the event page for information on special performances featuring tailgating, postshow discussions, and youth activities.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, February 25, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with February exploring Deacon King Kong by James McBride. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

Books & Bars: Chain-Gang All-Stars

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, February 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by former Minnesota Public Radio producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being discussed this month is Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. Next month’s book is Demon Copperhead by Barbary Kingsolver.

Catacomb Cinema Club

What: Movies, Trivia, Cosplay
When: Tuesday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

The folks behind the Haunted Basement are crawling out of the depths to host a monthly horror movie night at Bryant Lake Bowl. The event will also feature trivia, a costume contest, and prizes. Screening this month is George Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

The Otherwhere Post with Emily J. Taylor

What: Books
When: Wednesday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Red Balloon Bookshop

Join author Emily J. Taylor to celebrate the launch of her latest young adult novel, The Otherwhere Post, a “dark academic fantasy full of deadly magic and dangerous secrets.” Copies of the book are available for preorder, which includes an art print and book swag. This event is free to attend and will conclude with an author signing. Registration is recommended but not required.

Comedy Night at the Mudd Room

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Mudd Room

Enjoy a night of laughs every week at the Mudd Room’s local comedy showcase. This week features Ahmed Khalaf. This event is 21+ and cover charge is $10, which gets added to your bill. There are no seat reservations or advanced ticketing, so be sure to get there early to grab a prime spot and some tasty bites.

Coffee Chat: Medical Technology Before the X-Ray

What: Educational
When: Thursday, February 27, at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Historic Fort Snelling

Coffee Chat is an informal discussion series hosted by the Minnesota Historical Society that explores different aspects of Fort Snelling’s history while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. This event looks at the evolution of medical technology and the treatments surgeons used before modern medicines and technology. Coffee Chats are included with regular site admission of free to $12; see website for more information.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, February 27, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week’s theme is “Constellation Luminary Box.”

Fifty Boxes of Earth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, February 27 through Sunday, March 16
Where: Park Square Theatre

Catch the world premiere of Fifty Boxes of Earth presented by Theater Mu. The story follows Q as they move to a new neighborhood with the titular boxes of dirt and start cultivating fantastical plants in the community garden, while “one man’s distrust grows even as his young daughter reaches out in friendship.” This play is a response to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and features both dance choreography and puppetry. Tickets are $10 to $45 with pay-as-you-are pricing. Some dates include artist talkbacks and mask requirements; see the website for more information.

Disney on Ice: Into the Magic

What: Family, Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2; various times
Where: Target Center

Sing and dance along with Disney favorites performed beautifully on ice, including Coco, Tangled, and Moana. Tickets start at $38.

Sports Romance Convention

What: Convention
When: Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2
Where: Doubletree by Hilton Minneapolis Airport (Bloomington)

Fans of spicy and swoon-worthy sports romance novels can enjoy an entire weekend of themed panels, vendors, author signings, jersey kickoff party, and more at this new convention. The 18+ event will feature more than 80 authors, including M. George, Chelsea Curto, DB Axtell, Jenni Bara, Taylor E Weston, and AK Blythe. Weekend tickets start at $175 and day passes start at $50.

Co-Hi Con: A Gaming and Sci-Fi Comfy Convention

What: Gaming, Nightlife, Convention
When: Saturday, March 1, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Murzyn Hall (Columbia Heights)

Co-Hi Con is the totally chilled-out convention you may be looking for after a stressful winter. During the day, relax with cartoons, tabletop gaming (from 2D Con), vendors, and artists. Then, at 7:00 p.m., it converts to a 21+ affair for cosplay and karaoke. Tickets range from $5 to $20, with free admission for kids 6 and under.

First Saturday Science: Robotics

What: Educational, Science & Tech, Family
When: Saturday, March 1, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Metro State University

First Saturday Science, a monthly program at Metro State, seeks to improve accessibility to science with open programs that can lead folks toward scientific careers, or just greater curiosity. This month, learn all about robotics. No RSVP required, though young people under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Roll for Loot: Fantasy Gaming Market

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Lodge of Lazarus Crowe

Pick up loot for your next tabletop gaming session at this market. Expect local artists selling dice, rolling towers, illustrations, TTRPG books, and more. There will also be a raffle giveaway to win a gift certificate for and escape room experience at the Lodge of Lazarus Crowe.

Bedrace for Bridging

What: Community, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, March 1, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Buck Hill (Burnsville)

Every year, hundreds of people dress up in costumes and race mattresses downhill to support Bridging, a Twin Cities nonprofit that supports people who are pursuing housing stability by providing essential furniture and home goods. Folks can join the race by building a team and fundraising, or they can watch the races and cheer along as a spectator. Check out the event site for full details.

Midnight Mayhem: Leprechaun in the Hood

What: Movies
When: Saturday, October 5, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: The Main

The Midnight Mayhem series returns with a screening of Leprechaun in the Hood starring Warwick Davis and Ice-T. Expect special surprises and giveaways with host Chaz Kangas throughout this fun community film night. Tickets are $10.

PokéCon Day MN

What: Convention
When: Sunday, March 2, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Eagan Community Center

Celebrate Pokémon Day with a full day of games, anime, tournaments, art, and more. This event will also feature vendors, Girl Scouts selling cookies, and Free Geek Twin Cities providing Nintendo DS battery replacements. The new location also boasts plenty of PokéStops and an indoor play place for young kids. Tickets are $30 at the door, and kids under five are free with an adult.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 2, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Be sure to check out the Source calendar for additional events!

Pints & Pages

What: Books, Food & Drinks, Family
When: Sunday, March 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Fat Pants Brewing Co. (Eden Prairie)

Grab a drink and your next read at the Pints & Pages book fair! There will be local bookshops selling a variety of titles, as well as vendors selling their wares. Kids can get in on the fun too with a Mardi Gras mask activity and tasty hot cocoa. Additionally, 10% of brewery sales will be donated to the Paperback Exchange to help them rebuild after a water main flood caused devastating damages to their bookstore.

The Bards Quartet

What: Music
When: Sunday, March 2, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

Enjoy an afternoon of video game music played by the Bards Quartet. And if the music puts you in the mood to play games, be sure to check out Can Can Wonderland’s arcade, which features over 150 machines set to free play. Admission is $16.

Free Virtual Yoga at Union Depot

When: Tuesday, February 25, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class streamed from the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more info, as well as additional in-person yoga events.

The Secret Language of the Inca: Knots, Textiles, and Symbols

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Learn about the innovative ways that the Inca and their predecessors used to communicate, including the knot-based quipus system, the yupana counting device, and intricate textiles encoded with a symbolic language. This webinar will be led by Peruvian tour guide Vanessa Vasquez and end with a Q&A session. Tickets are $12.

Winter Wednesday with a Scholar

When: Wednesday, February 26, at 2:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

Join the Ramsey County Library and a guest scholar for an educational dive into their specialty on Wednesdays throughout the winter season. This week, Šišókadúta will discuss saving the Dakota language.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Hop on voice or video and chat while you create art, then share your finished pieces on the #art-club channel! This event is open to all. You can join by visiting twincitiesgeek.com/discord.

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–New York City in the 1930s: Overcoming the Great Depression

What: Educational
When: Thursday, February 27, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, cultural historian George Scheper explores the array of moods during the Great Depression “as reflected in the cultural crosscurrents of literature, music, stage, and screen, with escapist entertainment counterbalanced by strong currents of social realism and social engagement.” General-admission tickets are $40, and a discount is available for members.
